Facial hair after chemo

Losing my hair was bad enough with chemo and am very very happy that my hair has started to grow back. However, a less satisfying end result is a noticeable mustache and facial hair on the side of my face. Have any of you had this problem and what did you do about it? If I pluck the hair, will it come back even thicker? Will it get worse since I'm on Arimidex? Ugh!

Hi,
Congrats on finishing.
Abou the hair thing; It's very common after chemo. The thought is its like the soft down-like hair that babies are born with?
Anyway, after I finished my chemo, I had it as well as did alot of women here on these boards. You can shave it, depillatory, etc. It won't grow back.
Don't know about the Arimidex though.
-
I had it on the sides of my face to my ears and it went away within a few weeks after. I think like lkc said, it's the fuzz that comes with new babies and does go away on it's own, like the fuzz you start with after you lose you head hair. It's whiter and fuzzier at first than grows normal. I would think if you shaved it, it MIGHT be thicker when it grows in again. You can't even tell I had it now, I think it's falls out and the new stuff is normal for that area. Didn't have it on the mustache area though.
IT will pass too! Hang in there! Also, I'm on arimidex and it has NOT affected that, or caused it again. Just the A/C.
-
I had it too. It was very soft and not thick. I waxed it once, it did come back, but less of it and not any thicker. I'm almost 2 years out from the end of chemo (TAC) and my "fur face" is gone.

I had some serious side burns after my hair grew back. I was freaking out! I just realized after reading this thread that they have diminished muchly! Sweet. I was not enjoying that at all!

I had the blonde monkey face, too. It was disgusting, but thankfully, short lived. I didn't wax, it just disappeared on its own. It was not pleasant, but don't worry, it won't last.

Hi folks my name is Terry Kavanagh and I am a lung cancer patient. Right now I am involved in some research with Liverpool University, here in the United Kingdom. One of the projects we are looking at is how cancer can affect your appearance. I'm looking at some interesting postings about facial hair. I wondered if you would consider sharing your experiences of how you dealt with this issue, ie, with other people staring or making comments. Also any other visual problems that may have come from having cancer. Kindest Regards, Terry

I'm freaking out!! I feel like the bearded lady at the circus. I'm growing mutton chops. My last chemo session was 2 months ago. My hair is growing back, but now I have facial hair - on the sides of my face and under my jawline extending down - like a beard. It's very light, almost grey/blond/white. I am glad to be getting my hair back, but I don't like the facial hair.
I am so glad there are others that have experienced this. I felt like I was the only one. It's nice to know it goes away over time. I won't wax or shave. I know this can make hair come back thicker and make things worse.
I guess like all my treatments...this too shall pass.
Regards,
Debbie

When I start to look like Elvis, I go and have it waxed.

I finished chemo July 17. I have always had my upper lip waxed professionally, so that was not shocking. The soft downy hair on my lower cheek area I am not used to. I assumed it was from the chemopause. I did some home wax strips last night and it hurt like a b*%@c! I did leave a lot behind because I could not take it. Now that I know it will disappear on its own, I will leave it alone.
I also have little bumps on weird placed on my body that I think are related to little fine hairs coming back.
Thanks all.

I too finished chemo 2 months ago & started getting the "peach fuzz" on my face. Scared the begeegeees out of me. Glad to hear it will (hopefully) go away on it's own!By the way my PET scan last week showed no sign of disease! Yipee!!!

Thanx!

I used to refer it as the blonde monkey look. Hated it. Was the worst. But, it wasn't too long before it was gone and like Linda said, it didn't come back. Wax is my suggestion.
Good luck

I had the same thing happen. My husband actually noticed it before I did. I was so embarrassed. Then chemo put me into menopause and then I had a complete hysterectomy and I continued to have the unwanted facial hair. I get an occasional hair on my chin and have more of a mustache. Even though it is light I do not like it being there. I just started using a hair removal cream by Avon that works really well. It is easy and quick.
Good luck,
Ann

I was treated with 5-FU, cisplatin, taxotere and erbitux for esophageal CA. One month after finishing chemo, scalp hair is now growing coarse and white with black patches (think dalmation) when it had been sandy colored, and I have sandy colored facial fuzz. Hope this all straightens itself out before too long!
-
i shaved mine with an electric razor after trying hair removal creme. which kind of burned my skin.
the razor rocks. it's my husbands. the hair has not returned.

I had it too, after my ACT X 8. I did electrolisis..worked great , now nothing has grown back.
-
I'm following this topic with interest as I have observed the fuzzy face. Last chemo was April 21, also ACT X 8. Glad to read that it's not uncommon and that it will go away! Hair on head is coming in nicely.
It was through googling my facial fuzz that I became aware of breastcancer.org so there's a silver lining there! Just learning my way around the site.
-
Kind of adds insult to injury, doesn't it?
I shaved my with my electric razor. Had to do it twice. It didn't grow back thicker or heavier.
-
I used the hair removal cream which worked for me...mine did not come in all soft and peach fuzz at all...it was an outright BEARD..it was disgusting! I remember that I had hair over my top lip that actually bothered me on my lips if it got too long!
It has since went back to what it is normally, but I am afraid once I DO hit menopause that I will have this in store. My Dad is a very hairy man, and my Mom plucks her hair on her face and it is very coarse. I had to put up with it for about 6 months.
-
Nair makes a sensitive skin formula that I used with great success.
-
i also endorse the electric razor use.. it works very well.
-
I too and getting this lovely facial hair, plus chin hairs.
Used a electric razor once on the sides of my face, and it is growing back. Ugh. Looks like I need to shave again. The chin hairs are fewer, I just pluck those.
13 wks PFC for me.

I too had that hair show up on my face - I was on a small weekend trip with my sister when I noticed it. I grabbed her razor, shaved it off and it never came back.
BC - the gift that keeps on giving.
-
I had the hairy face too! I was so frustrated thinking I would be hairy face forever. In frustration, I shaved it off and thought I would do something like "threading" or waxing later, but it didn't grow back. I felt stumbly at first but then in a week or so it disappeared.
-
Thanks, friends, for sharing! Love the Lenn's description of BC as "the gift that keeps on giving." Seeing lymphedema specialist tomorrow.

I finished my chemo on May, 2010. Have noticed this baby hair on my face and googled to see if this was normal. That is how I came upon this website. My hair is growing back quickly and very thick with lots of gray but the facial hair is not flattering. I did not have it before chemo. Please tell me it will go away or should I try laser hair removal? I have read posts that it will go away on its own but how long will that take?
-
My fuzz is still present. Last chemo was April 21 and I've read it disappears after 3-4 months; looks like it will be at least 4 months and 3 days for me! As you & I have read, some remove it and others wait it out. Mine isn't particularly noticable except in certain light so I'm waiting ... and waiting.
I also found this website googling a specific question.

My last chemo was 6/8/10 and I've been noticing all this extra facial hair. I asked my oncologist today about it and he said no one had ever complained about it before.....fortunately I found this forum and had a couple of good laughs reading through the posts. I love the monkey face references. Anyway I feel better to know this is common and I plan to use my husbands shaver soon! Unfortunately, even though I sailed through chemo and radiation and finished radiation 8/31/10, I'm in the hospital with pneumonia. But they caught it early and I'm in good hands.

I am laughing with tears rolling down my face as I read this thread. I just now noticed that I have a beard and this is the first place I came for information. This is so horrifying but it helps to know I am not alone. I actually pointed it out to my husband, not a good move for someone who hopes her husband still finds her attractive. He actually was a little jealous because he has a beard but I am quickly catching up with him. I am not sure if I will let it go away on its own or take steps to get rid of it. This is really too much after 6 chemos, 2 surgeries and anticipation of radiation, what an injustice!

To all, including Grayt, good comments for someone like me who is searching in the middle of the night. Chemo finalized menopause for me -- I completed the last on Dec. 31, 2009, Happy New Year! -- and in the last couple months the "got milk" normal above-lip hair I had has gotten coarser and darker. The hair on my head came back baby soft, but thinner -- due to Arimidex? Does that estrogen inhibitor play a role in the facial hair? My oncologist, rather elderly, off handedly said shave like the Japanese, they have soft skin -- but I fear that would make the facial hair get even coarser. Any ideas on how to manage, since Arimidex/aromatase inhibitors are in my future for at least another 4 years? P.S. Grayt and others -- also dealing w/ lymphedema, grateful for good help and it is fine.
