Stage 1, HER2 positive, chances of recurrence after Herceptin?

Hello ladies,

I'm halfway through my year of Herceptin - due to finish in Feb 2011. I was diagnosed in Jan 2009 with a 1.1 cm tumour, nodes clear, grade 3, ER/PR neg. After my lumpectomy I had 6 rounds of FEC chemo, then radiation and then went on the ALTTO trial where I received Tykerb (Lapatinib) only for 3 months. I dropped out as I wasn't happy with Herceptin being excluded altogether and went onto the standard Herceptin treatment.

My onc says the first two years after diagnosis and surgery are the critical ones in terms of recurrence and I am 6 months away from my second cancerversary.

I'm confused as to what the risk of recurrence - local or distant - actually is for someone like me.

Does anyone know? I'd be grateful for any info anyone else can offer.

Hugs and healing to you all...

Lucy

I would like to know too. In my case my tumor was 1.7 cm. I had BMX. No nodes. 6 TCH chemos, will finish the year of herceptin in Dec. I was told 30% of recurrence with only BMX. Then I was told chemo takes that risk down 30%. They are not sure about the herceptin because that is pretty new for those of us who are stage 1.

I don't know if these are old numbers. If anyone has any new ones, please post them.

The DFS for Node Negative Her2 gals is somewhere between 90-95 percent after completing one year of Herceptin. (60 months) It is also thought that with Grade 3 and Her2 being so aggressive if you make it 60 months you are fairly good to go. Who know thought as Herceptin has only been used in stage 1-3 since 2004.

I will tell you what my ONC says and he is world renown and trained and Practiced at MD ANDERSON and ONCS all over the country regard him as one of the most distinguished in Breast Cancer treatment. He states If you (stage 1 node neg) make it to 3 year mark you are most likely cured. I have been posting with many of the girls that fit that profile since the get go here and they are all fine. Another indicator of good news, I was interested in the Neratanib trials and I wasn't allowed in as they closed it to stage 1 gals with no nodes as they already do so well on Herceptin.  I am not telling you ..that you are cured  I am just saying most will tell you the odds are in your favor!

mmm5, that is fabulous news indeed and I feel greatly reassured. Laughing Thank you! Just one question - did you mean 60 weeks rather than 60 months?
