Raloxifene--do you take it or did you say "no way"?

I read through the thread "To Tamoxifen or not to Tamoxifen" and really appreciated the posts from women there.  I just had an appt with an oncologist at the center where my DCIS was treated.  I have had my uterus/ovaries removed due to other problems (but my mom died of ovarian cancer and I have two aunts who had BC).  The oncologist recommended raloxifene (Evista) since I am in menopause (I am 51 and was headed there at the time of my hysterectomy/BSO).

I'd love to hear from those of you who are on this medication and those who said "no".  I'd love to know why you made your decision and if you are taking it or were taking it, what kinds of SEs did you have?

Also anyone out there have any good scholarly articles about studies with this drug?

Thanks...

I have taken both tamoxifen (5 years) and evista (currently have been on it about a year and a half now); fortunately I tolerate both meds pretty well overall. Have you considered genetic testing since you have a family history of both ovarian and breast cancer? It might help with your decision making. Tamoxifen does have more risk of serious SEs (but they are low, less than 1%), but is known to be more effective than evista overall at preventing bc.

    Hi Anne

Thanks for your post.  Yes, I had the genetic testing...I am negative but the geneticist said that does not rule out any other genetic mutation, only the BRCA.

Hi speech529.  I finished my mammosite HDR on 6/11/2010.  My last big decision was tamoxifen.  I am 51 and on my way to menopause, 3 periods over the last year.  My husband and I opted to consult with a hematologist.  Both my surgeon and radiation oncologist said they would recommend it, but the final decision would be mine.  The consultation was very helpful.  He explained the pros and cons and then specifically looked at my case and said the most he would do is "softly recommend" it.  Meaning that statistically it would not offer a huge advantage for me.  He then listened to my side.  I explained that I have tried to keep myself healthy through diet and exercise.  I very rarely take more than 1 motrin when I have aches and pains from working out.  I have never been on any medication.  I added that I didn't feel comfortable taking a drug that with potentially serious SEs.  I think mentally it would drive me crazy.  All that being said I am saying no to tamoxifen and getting on with my life.  I too have a daughter and will have the genetic testing at some point.  Good luck with your decision.

dcchef  thanks for your input--it makes sense what you say.  It sounds very similar to me.  I am in menopause (surgical) and I try to live a very healthy lifestyle.
