A new lump 1 month post final Chemo

Options

Short summary:

My wife had a bilateral mastectomy in January 2010 for IDC of the left breast which showed no lymph node involvement. She opted for the bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction; which was a great and courageous move on her part. She just completed Chemo one month ago and started Tamoxifen.

About 10 days ago she discovered a new lump in her right breast. An ultrasound was inconclusive due to the tissue expanders for reconstruction. An MRI can't be done due to the metal rings on the expander. The oncologist and plastic surgeon say the lump "doesn't feel cancerous", but any lump at this point is concerning. The docs say it is possibly a Seroma or fatty nodule. She is having a PET scan today.

Has anybody else had a similar experience? I'm just scared to death for her.

 Thank you,

After a horrible 2 weeks of worry, the PET scan was negative. The lump is likely a fatty nodule or seroma.

First good news we have gotten in 8 months.

I'm very glad for you!  I'm undergoing the same thing - I had a unilateral mastectomy, finished chemo three months ago, and now am waiting to find out if a new area of abnormality is a new cancer.  It's very worrisome but I guess we have to live with it.

I'm sorry I hadn't seen your post earlier. I had the same exact thing, except BLM with immediate DIEP.  I had the chemo before the surgery. About 2 months after the BLM I had a suspicous lump that proved to be fat necrosis, or something. But, my onc saw me immediately, sent me over to the hospital for immediate ultrasound, and... after confirming that there was a small lump, I had a fine needle aspiration/biopsy right then.  Though they had to send the biopsy to the lab and I waited a few days for final confirmation, the Dr. who did the biopsy reassured me on the spot that it was most likely b9 because it was fluid filled.

It was a very scary time!  I'm happy for you and your wife that the news was good!

    Sue
