One year follow-up

Hi, all,

I was diagnosed with DCIS 4.5 cm of the left breast a year ago today.  I had a mastectomy and no chemo or radiation.  No tamoxifen.  I have had no problems.  It is hard to imagine a year gone by already.  I have my first follow-up diagnostic mammogram of the "good breast," aka "uniboob" tomorrow, and the radiologist who did my biopsy, injection for SNB for surgery, etc., will be there to read it, etc.  I am finding that for the first time in awhile I am nervous about this upcoming scan.  It is bringing back memories of last year.  I just wanted to share these feelings with a group of women who truly know what the experience of this diagnosis entails.  I have been reading this site for a year, and it has been a wonderful and safe haven for me.  Thank you for sharing your stories.

Amy, good luck tomorrow!  I'm a uniboob too and I remember that for the first couple of years after my diagnosis, I would get nervous weeks in advance before my annual mammos and MRIs.  I'm almost at the 5 year mark now and I had my annual MRI about 6 weeks ago.  I can honestly tell you that I wasn't nervous for 1 second.  So how you are feeling now is perfectly normal, but for most of us, the fear does fade with time. I hope that you'll find that as well.  And until then, just remind yourself that it's normal to feel nervous and it doesn't mean that there will be anything wrong.

Hi,  Beesie, and thanks for the response and your many posts I've read throughout the year.   They've been very helpful to me.  The radiologist talked with me today after my mammogram.  She said it looked fine----and due to my premenopausal state, she would like me to have yearly MRIs as well.  That way, I'd have either a diagnostic mammo or a MRI every 6 months.

    Congratulations on your upcoming milestone!!

HI Amy,  Congratulations on the good news.  I finished mammosite HDR on 6/11/2010.  I am doing pretty well.  I am experiencing some radiation burn and what looks more like a rash to me.  Not terrible, but annoying.  I am still wearing sports bras - I don't know if underwire will be in my future!!  I didn't have a lot to begin with (36A) and there's less now.  I am just happy to be intact.  I have been reading blogs on this site and it really helps to hear about everyone's journey.   Be well, DCCHEF.
