Starting Chemo Feb 2010?

Done!!! Put up my smiley with the sunglasses!! Surgery to replace TE with something more realistic and removal of the port will be in approximately 30 days! One last week of feeling crappy and then it WILL start to become just a memory...so ready to start the next step of this recovery! I don't know whether to laugh or cry- might just go do both!!
-
kshep - congratulations!!! Hope your surgery goes smoothly. Have a good rest (30 days sound pretty good). Very happy for you. Definitely laugh!!!
-
1 day and counting! Started my steroids today...I'll be up all night (oh wait! I already am!)
Here's to good bloodwork! Have a great day ladies!
-
take a valium
they really help you sleep when on steroids
-
Congratulations, Bambaloos! Isn't it weird to be on the other side of something that was so scary and difficult? Now it's just a memory!
-
Hi, all. My bloodwork yesterday indicated a lower WBC and my onc said that's definitely the rads. This is my 4th week now and I'm half way (17) done - 11 more regular rads + 5 boosts to the incision area. Onc wants another lab next week and if it goes low enough I may get a shot.
Gosh. I thought Neulasta was a thing of the past, but it just may befriend me again.
Hope everyone is recovering well.
-
Yea! Sitting at my LAST chemo treatment! Thank God. I hope for smooth sailing from this point forward. 4 procedures in my near future, not including a PET scan that the Onc will order when I see him again in 3 weeks.
Hot flashes seem worse instead of getting a little better. Doc is going to research what other drugs he may be able to give me for them. It's humid here in AZ, which combines with the 108 degreee heat and makes it almost unbearable. I'm sweating driving down the road with the AC blasting.
Last Neulasta tomorrow-something else to celebrate!
I hope everyone has a terrific day!
-
Way to go, burley!
-
Burley: Tell me what yours say about the hot flashes. Mine have gotten worse, too. I took a sip of white wine last night, and woops, there one goes. Sometimes they make me really agitated-feeling. I saw a different doc, a gyne, who did a hormone panel; talked about fooling around with levels of neurontin. I'm leery, because I don't want to increase my mental fuzziness.
Congrats on the last chemos!
-
I talked with the Onc yesterday about the hot flashes, and thought he would have another medicine to suggest. Problem is, most of the meds that help are anti-depressants, and I'm already on three all the time. So! He's going to do some research, and hopefully have some insight at my next appointment in 3 weeks.
So! I have to get bloodwork twice, and a PET scan before I see him. I'm excited for the scan to know that I'm completely in the clear.
I also meet with my plastic surgeon in two weeks to discuss a timeframe for the implants. She had originally said 6 weeks after my last chemo, so I'm gonna hold her to that. Especially since I'll have the results of the PET scan and she'll know that I'm good to go. Somewhere around the same time I'll get my port out...then it's on to nipples about 6 weeks after the implants, then tattooed areolas about 6 weeks after the implants. Whew! Gonna be a busy end of the year.
I've applied for a grant from the Breast Cancer Society which is here locally, and hopefully will receive some kind of assistance throughout the rest of the process while I'm still not working. At this point, any amount would help. I'm also hoping to pick up some fill-in hours at my old job once the college kids go back to school in August...we're struggling, which I'm really sick of! Medical bills are kicking my butt, even though I only pay small amounts to them each month.
Well, off to get my Neulasta shot...have a great day ladies!
-
Burley any tips or news on how to control hot flashes most welcome. Mine are worse than ever but definitely after sugar intake. I do not eat after 6pm now in the hope of getting some sleep. Lack of sleep makes me very irritable and fed up I'm sure we all feel the same.
Talking of alcohol I read that it increases the production of Oestrogen which is not good for those of us who have Oestrogen positive cancers. I'm trying to restrict myself to one glass a week of lower proof fizzy wine. Boring !
-
Caffeine or alcohol definitely bring on a hot flash on with me, but those are not the only times, and I'm not giving up an occasional cup of coffee or drink. Not estrogen positive, and don't even have one alcoholic drink a week. Spicy foods are an issue, but once again, if I'm in the mood for Thai or Korean, I eat out and darn the consequences. I don't want effexor. I was fanning myself like mad today from mild exertion indoors.
-
My rad onco said crystal ginger and bee pollen for hot flases.
-
I hate the feeling from the Neulasta...I got so lucky with no reaction from the first two. And why doesn't the Claritan work for me, hmmm? Bummer. Hopefully I feel better tomorrow-have to go to my son's school to pick up his schedule. That will be a wig day-I don't think my 15 year old wants to hang out with his mom in a bandana.
My 10 year old daughter just came in in tears because she thinks she's fat...holy cow, what do I do with that? She has a totally different body type than I did when I was her age, so I can't say if she'll be skinny like I was or not. She's got a booty, which I never had. Poor thing. She's exercising on my eliptical as we speak.
We're supposed to go out to dinner tonight to celebrate my last treatment, but I'm not sure if I'm up to it. Bummer!
I hope everyone is having a great weekend-
-
hi everyone, just finished my 10/12 taxol yesterday. i have read alot on the numbness here however is anyone getting taste buds problems? i am smelling weird stuff too. taste and smell metal, its horrible! only fruits now don't put me off....another 2 more weeks and i am done.
cant wait to finish my last 2 taxols, crossing my fingers
hope everyone had a great day!
-
It takes a while for the taste to come back - for me it's 3 months since my last chemo and most things taste normal except fried foods which is good cuz I don't need them anyway
My sense of smell is still way off and I'm wondering if it will ever return. Try corn - I lived on it during chemo.
-
m2u- I did notice a increase in taste issues the last few weeks I was on Taxol. The metallic taste was especially strong. This was after most of the other taste issues from the AC had long since gone. I am still experiencing a bit of this, but I still have Taxol in my system from last weds, so I am hoping that it will go away soon and not come back. I have my post-chemo party scheduled for this Friday night, so I am hoping all the taste and neuropathy issues are gone or decreased by then.
-
My taste buds are dulled as usual. I can't wait to get them back! My tongue feels like I scraped it on a concrete wall-which is usual for me. I'll be so glad when that goes away.
I haven't had any issues with smell, though. And the only time I got a metallic taste is when they were accessing my port.
This eye watering thing is gonna drive me crazy! I look like I'm crying all the time-my eyes are red and swollen, which is really noticeable now that I don't have any eyelashes. Sigh. I was hoping they would last.
I've got the bone pain thing back like I did with my first Taxotere treatment. I can't wait for all of this to be over! I'm not sure when that will be, but I'm counting the days...
-
Congratulations to those finishing chemo, and good thoughts to those who haven't reached the finish line yet.
Last week I had my first mammogram since all of the BC stuff started last year. The mammogram was on my unaffected side, so I shouldn't have been so worried, right? Anyway, I can't tell you the relief when I received the results in the mail that it was "normal (not cancerous)." Whoo hoo! So, this Friday I'm finally getting my exchange surgery plus a lift on my unaffected side.
I can't wait to be able to move on from all of this. Thanks to all for your help during the scariest time of my life!
Cindy

I've been reading the posts, but not posting. Forgive me ladies, and congrats to all who have finished and are close to finishing!
I did finish chemo on June 3rd (I'd love to put on my happy face sunglasses now!) and almost immediately went into a depressive tailspin. I barely talked to anyone for a couple of weeks and just started really coming out of my shell. I never saw that one coming because I'd managed to stay positive all through the chemo!
But now I'm 10 treatments of 33 into radiation therapy. My hair is starting to come in though I lost my eyebrows and most of my eyelashes. My joints are aching like crazy, which is something new, and the hot flashes and night sweats continue. I'm told the joint pain was a parting gift from the Taxotere and it will probably take a year to really get back to "normal".
Even though I wasn't posting, I'm so thankful for those who did, because it really did help a lot to know I wasn't alone going through this. God bless you all!
-
Hey, cbranner! It's good to see your face again. Good to hear you're done with chemo and about 1/2 done with rads. Sorry about the joint aches and hot flashes. I wake up with really stiff hands, but some days are ok. I will be sending good wishes your way for reduction in pain.
-
Congrats CinD on your upcoming surgery, and congrats cbranner for finishing! It's great to see so many of us done with all the chemo crapola.
Whew, I'm having a major hot flash as we speak...usually they aren't as bad during the day, but I was out running errands in the 108 degree heat-ugh.
-
cbranner, I too read this thread a lot but sometimes don't post for awhile; it's so helpful and lifts my spirits. wow, I finished chemo on June 10 and experiencing some of the same - joint pain which I didn't have a lot of during chemo but now, 5 weeks out, I had a lot of it in the last 2 weeks especially while sleeping. And hot flashes, which were consistent throughout chemo but now seem to be SO noticeable - I was at a work reception last night when all of a sudden one came on as I was talking to collegues and one of my male collegues handed me a napkin without saying anything to me while I was speaking. So embarassing. Gawd!! This could last for a year? Ack!! Better than cancer, but geez. Glad you're done tho ; )
-
cbranner, congratulations! You just got the "happy face with sunglasses"!
I'm doing rads, too. 22 done out of 28+5. I post on the rads forum (June 2010) as well, so check us out for progress/complaints/tips there if you haven't already.
-
I too don't post but read.. so thought I'd join back in and say HI..I finished my last of cycle 6 yesterday.. so I'll take a pair of glasses.. next is a CT to see if I am done or if I get 2 more cycles (6 tx) then herceptin for life or until it decides not to work..but I'm being optimistic and going with 10 years at least.. until the next steps.. with all this decision time on what to do.. surgery... no surgery.. still have some C in my breast.. and even if lymph nodes are clear now.. weren't before.. it's all up to me no matter which Dr I talk to... but I can decide whenever...
Congratulations to everyone who is done with this journey.. I am glad you've been posting and helping me deal with the lovely hot flashes and tingling..
-
Yay for makmak. So good to hear from you again. Good luck on your CT. All these decisions can get stressful sometimes, but so glad to see that chemo has worked for you. Sending positive vibes your way.
-
big congrats to those done with chemo!! will be joining you soon. so glad i was able to do my radiation while getting the taxol, instead of having this take longer.
had chemo yesterday & bless my onc, he ordered my port removal to be scheduled asap after my last chemo next week. that will save me a few days of waiting!!!! now i get to tell everyone who asks how i'm doing, i am being deported. heh heh
-
"deported" LOL Love that. I hope to be deported soon, too!
-
Me too! I wanna be deported! Although maybe that's not as funny, considering I live in Arizona with all the illegal immigration crap going on...still funny. Ha!
Holy cow, my tongue feels like I burned it on seriously hot soup...and the roof of my mouth. The mouth issues just bug me all day long-can't get away from them. I find myself eating and drinking more because of it-that would be the 3 pounds I've gained in the last week. Alas, time to actually exercise. I think I'll start with trimming my trees first.
Have a great day ladies!
-
burley - Have you tried biotene for your mouth? It really helps. Some of the mouth issues may also be caused by stress. Talk to your onc.
