Hey Gals,
I'm anticipating Friday and my last boost treatment. This weekend I really stepped out of my comfort zone and went out without my wig. I also painted my fingernails and toenails bright green! I figured I might as well live a little dangerously. (Ha ha). My DH and I are going to celebrate my last rads tx on Friday. I'm also going to get my hair colored. It's been 12 weeks PFC and it's time. My hair is soft and curly. I have no idea what to do with curly hair as it's been straight for 49 years! It also has two white spots in the front. My sister said my hair reminded her of Jaime Lee Curtis. Now if only that were true. It's not long enough yet. It's less than an inch long. My hysterectomy/oophorectomy is scheduled for August 11th. That should be the final invasive treatment for me. The last three weeks of rads have been the most difficult with skin peeling and the raw, weepy spots. Thanks for encouraging me through my pity party last week. Hang in there everyone and a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to all who have finished before me. I'll probably be moving to the Arimidex thread after this one.
-
Well, my last treatment is today! Tomorrow after a med onc appt. hubby can tow our travel trailer back home to Bryan and I'll say goodbye to Houston. I was fortunate to be able to go home weekends and live in the trailer during the week. My skin is pink but healthy. Let the healing begin! Looks like Rocket from NC will be the last one standing Friday. Good luck to her and all who got zappd before - and after - us!

I'm DONE. Completely, absolutely, finished!! Last one was today at 7:30 am!!!!
Rocket, Friday will be here before you know it!
-
Mchan and Cafelovr: Congratulations on finishing! What a milestone. Mine comes tomorrow.
-
Yup I think I will be the last one. Skin is peeling like crazy. I also broke out in an itchy, blistery rash on my abdomen where I received the Zoladex injection to stop my ovaries prior to having the hysterectomy/oophorectomy. My skin is not happy. :-( I colored my hair last night and now I have brown fuzzy hair instead of gray! Hey at least it's hair and I'm glad I have some. Friday can't come soon enough! Congrats Mchan and Cafelovr. I'm so happy for you both! My treatments are at 8:30 am and after this morning, I'll have only two more to go! YAY!
-
I am DONE! Baked some cookies and took a card into my excellent rad techs this morning. They were really terrific and I will miss them (a little).
On one of the ceiling tiles in the rad room -- the one that is squarely in your line of vision as you're being treated -- someone had painted a summer scene of a little boy and girl at the seaside. They are carefully launching a toy boat into the water, ready to let it sail away. It was a comforting scene to contemplate for 31 days, but this morning, it held new meaning for me. I'm ready to move on and set sail!
-
Cher, Linda, Luah....CONGRATS! I came back to see how all of you are doing. Rocket, you are almost there, YIPPEE! So glad to see these posts. Keep in touch on this thread every once and awhile.

One more to go, Rocket! You can do it! Don't forget to turn out the lights on this thread tomorrow after you're done.

How ya doin Rocket? We're waiting!!!!!

Congratulations to all who finished this week. It has been one week since I finished and I am shocked at how fast the skin is healing. I have some nice new pink skin and still a new large area that is raw and just a wee bit weepy tonight. I guess it could be worse since I now understand what that bolus was used for. I had four of my 7 zaps with it on and all 6 boosts.
Hope all are healing well too.
Rocket hope your last one went great today.
-
I finished just over a week ago and feel like I am getting better. Still peeling a lot and one spot that is just a bit weepy, but overall I do think it is getting better! Hope all are starting the healing process and doing well.
-
I'm still coming to terms that I'm all finished. Chemo...check; surgery...check; rads...check. It's time to get on and move forward. I'm just glad I made some new friends along the way~
Love to all!

Finished Rads on June 11. Started Arimidex on June 25 and started PT for Lymphedema on Friday. Working on getting that compression sleeve and glove this week before I fly off on vacation on July 23rd. My breast looks healed and the skin looks great. It is hard to believe that one month ago the same area was bright red and peeling. Mild swelling is mostly under my arm pit, above my elbow and at the side of my left breast. It is much less than during radiation and not as uncomfortable as before. Looking forward to a much overdue vacation.
Hugs, K

I'm DONE! The machine broke prior to my last treatment and I had to wait for a repairman. They couldn't fix it, so they had to put me on another machine and reconfigure it to give me the final boost treatment. Go figure.... After it was completed, I got to ring a bell in the waiting room for all those who finish. It's called the "Bell of Hope". I rang it loud and clear and everyone in the waiting room clapped for me. Tears of joy ran down my face. Thank you strong ladies for cheering me on! You really are awesome! Surgery..Check, Chemo...Check, Rads...Check and one more surgery to go (hysterectomy) and then I'll be finished too. I'm officially turning the lights out on this thread now. Thanks again everyone for being patient with me. I hope to see you on other threads here and I will be praying for you and thinking of you. Live life!

(It sure is dark in here!)
Way to go, Rocket! And good luck to every one on this thread! Here's to finding a cure!

I'll be around.

I will find a home somewhere on this site. Not sure where I fit yet. Glad to hear all are done now and hopefully doing well. Now, maybe the lymphedema or 2009 thread...
-
Congratulations to everyone!
Amazing to me how fast time flew with treatments now that I'm looking back. Took my skin about 1 1/2 weeks to start getting better, but now it seems like a tan...and dry, dry skin.
Rocket-love the idea of the bell! What a simple yet strong way to finish off your treatment. In what has been the last of my hospital treatments I would have liked to do something like that.
Here's wishing the 'Bell of Hope' rings for everyone.
Diane.

I freaked out this morning after my shower. I found a lump! I almost screamed. Then I realized it was a blister that has formed from the radiation. What a relief! Never thought I'd be happy to see a blister. I hope my skin heals quickly too. It's still very red and irritated. I've slathered on tons of Udderly Smooth, Aquaphor, Elta and Lindi Skin Soothing Balm. I can't wear my fake boobs until it heals and I have to interview candidates for a vacant job position today with a flat chest! Maybe they won't notice.
-
Hey Rocket - don't worry your skin will be so much better in about 7-10 days after treatment. I am going in tomorrow to see the Rad Onc for a skin check since I finished two weeks ago. Last week my skin was a mess. Today most all of the peeling has stopped and looks like I have a tan. Skin remains dry even with lots of aloe cream. I too got those blisters, and in fact, I still have one that is hanging on but not a bother. Just wore my bra for the first time yesterday. Feels great to get back on track. Wishes for continued healing coming your way.
-
Hey Rocket,
Hooray to 'just a blister'. Amazing how quickly the mind takes you to thoughts of recurrence isn't it.
I had a small blister less than 1/4inch during treatment along axillary dissection scar. The technicians said that that area was common for irritations. It did eventually break but they had me put polysporin on it just to prevent possible infection. It dried up and went away, I also did not put lotion to that area during the blister. When it went away, I went back to slathering lotion on.
As far a anyone noticing your chest during an interview...even though it is front and centre in your mind I'm sure they will be too nervous to notice, I know I would be.
Diane
-
Hey Leslie1962 and DianeKS,
I appreciate your encouraging words. You were right Diane, I don't think the candidates notices my flat chest. They did look nervous despite the fact that I tried to put them at ease. I thought the one guy I interviewed would faint for sure. He was sweating profusely in his suit and tie. I felt so badly for him.
My skin is peeling like crazy and I will be glad when I can wear my bra and boobs too. I'm tired of feeling like a boy. At least my hair is starting to thicken up a little. I finished chemo on April 15th and I have about 2/3 of an inch of hair all over and very curly. It used to be stick straight.
Did either of you have any pain in your ribs from the radiation? I've been experiencing a lot of that and was diagnosed with lymphedema as well in both my chest and mildly in my arm.
-
Hi Rocket - glad to hear things are going well. I do not/did not have rib pain but I do have arm lymphedema and upper trunk LE. I do stretching about 2-3 times a day along with massage of the arm and upper chest. I have not worn my sleeve for about three weeks because of the peeling and oozing under my arm. My sleeve comes right up into the arm pit. I find right now I am doing fine without the sleeve. I have been a bad girl not wearing it because now the underarm is just fine, maybe a bit tender but no more peeling, weeping etc. I had to laugh at the comment about the profusely sweaty guy.
-
Hi Rocket,
No, I did not have rib pain although I did/do have some tight muscles d/t previous cording but now I also feel it along the lower breast area. I had lymphedema prior to rads, mostly to hand, but also in arm. No worse since rads. Once my skin started to peel it wasen't long before it got better so hang in there. I finished chemo April 8 so my hair is about the same length. In fact it is looking a bit scraggly, so I'm contemplating a small trim to clean the edges up.
Leslie1962-glad to hear things are going in the right direction with your skin.
Diane.
-
Hey Leslie1962,
I hate wearing my sleeve and compression vest, but the truth is I do believe they are helping my arm and chest with the swelling. My arm is a bit swollen and my chest is significantly swollen, so I'm trying to behave myself and wear the garments without complaining. It's tough to do. Sometimes I'm just a whining crybaby. At least on this site I can whine to people who totally understand where I'm coming from.
I need to be more like you and work on my exercises several times each day. Maybe it would make my ribs feel better. I do find it difficult to work a ten-hour day and fit in both exercise and manual lymph drainage along with laundry, cooking, etc. I'm really pretty organized, but there just aren't enough hours in the day.
DianeKS,
Glad to hear that your skin healed quickly. That's encouraging. What was your hair like before chemo? Is it curly now? Did it come in the same color as it was previously? Mine came in darker with streaks of gray in it too. EEEEK! I colored it about a week ago. It looks better, but very curly. I'm scared of what it's going to look like when it grows out more.
-
Hey Rocket,
My hair is exactly the same as before chemo. Almost all grey/white...I am 43. That was the biggest shock when it came out the last time in 06. I have curly hair to begin with, so as it is short right now it is still straight. Once it gets a little bit longer it gets curlier. I am going to keep it grey, but I like it really short or it makes me look like an old lady. Tired of being called my kids grandma, or 'baba' but it is soo hard to keep up with dying my hair, but now it is hard keeping up with cutting it short. Ach, who needs to complain, it's hair. I actually get a lot of positive comments about the grey, if I grow it out longer I always think it will look curly and look like a 'granola girl'. Decision, decisions...
Hope you are doing well.
Diane.
-
Diane: My hair came back grey. I was born with almost black hair, but I do have a lot of natural grey. I get a lot of compliments too, but I sure do miss my dark hair. I'm like you...it's hard to keep up with.
My skin is almost completely healed. The top layer of skin is still peeling off, but it's nice and pink underneath.
Rocket: I had pain in my ribs from radiation. I figured it was from holding my arms over my head every friggin day! All those muscles are sore from being so poked and prodded.
-
Yea for us all being done! rocket, I had horrible rib pain. My onc said that it was from rads. Mine were sore right after surgery too. My rads Dr said the radiation either irritated the area or cause a pocket of fluid. I finished rads beg of July and my ribs don't hurt anymore. Hope yours goes away quickly. My skin is healing really well and my energy is returning. I had 2 spots where I reacted to the glue in the stickers and those spots are not going away. I almost wonder if they are going to be scars. I am looking at my final exchange surgery in November!
Anyone else experience their muscles getting tighter? My pec muscles have really tightened up to the point of pain if I stretch.. I was wanting to wait to go to PT until my kids were back in school but I am not sure I can. My kids are so tired of me being gone.
-
Hi mom3band1g,
Great to hear most of your skin is getting better and your energy level is returning.
I definitely have tighter muscles after rads but I think it is also a combination of lymphedema and cording from my surgery all lumped together. I try and do stretching every day (not easy with two kinder home from school ages 7 & 5) and see a lymphedema specialist once and a while (not that I'm suggesting that for you). What I wanted to suggest that if you are having problems to the point of pain your not going to be feeling well and 'if momma ain't happy...nobody's happy'. That's the way it goes in our house anyway. So, I say make an apt. to see a PT and hopefully they can give you stretches for you to do at home. Maybe you will have to see them more often in the beginning but I'm betting you will feel better after going. Don't wait till the end of summer, IMHO it will just get worse. I'm guessing it will be a short apt. and you'll be back to you kids in no time. Mine actually do the stretches with me sometime...it feels good for them too!
Diane.

Hi Diane - I'm doing pretty well. My skin is starting to heal. I can't wait to wear my fake boobs again and then maybe I won't look like a boy! My hair isn't an inch long yet. My co-worker measured it with a ruler the other day and it was about 2/3 of an inch. I think it grows slow, but maybe it's my imagination because I'm obsessing over it.
Cafelovr - It's good to hear from you again. I hope you are doing well. My rib pain continues. How long did yours last? I'm always scared that maybe the cancer has spread to my ribs and that's why I was so worried about the pain. I had a bone scan prior to my mastectomy in January and it didn't reveal any metastasis, but I can't stop thinking about that possibility. I had no lymph node involvement out of 13 nodes, but I have seen others with no node involvement and yet they've experienced metastasis. As for hair, I think yours looks fantastic. If only mine would look that great, I'd be thrilled.
mom3band1g - I would also encourage you to go to PT. It has helped me tremendously with the muscle tightness and the cording. My PT gave me exercises to do at home and while they are time consuming, I feel so much better afterward. I also had a lot of problems where the stickers were stuck to my skin. That area reacted more to the radiation and I had more skin breakdown. It's finally starting to get better though. I keep slathering the cream on three times a day. Hang in there!
