I recently lost my father, Dec. 27th 09, to metastatic liver cancer.  He was still golfing last summer and now he's gone.  That is how fast it took him down.  Immediately following his funeral, we(my brother my sister and myself) were informed from our mother that her breast cancer was back and had metastasised(sp) to her bones. With no history of cancer in our family, to say it's "surreal" is far from accurate to describe what I feel at this point.  We are 3 VERY concerned sibs that are offered NO support for any kind of testing from our current doctors.  Can anyone Please tell me what options we have to find out if we are also going to be sick?   Or preventative medicine we can seek?  thanks in advance~

Coincidences do happen, but it sounds like some genetic counseling may be in order.  You'll be asked to collect/submit (extended) family medical history before the appointment.

With that information in hand, the counsellor should be able to discuss your risks, and what tests, if any, would be appropriate to further ID the specific risks you face.

Your Mom's (or Dad's) oncologist(s) may be the right one to direct you to a genetic counselor who specializes in cancer risk.

    Another thought...

A very-well regarded book you might want to take a look at is:

Anticancer: A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD

The link is to Amazon, and there is an embedded video there where the author discusses his book a bit.  That may give you a sense of whether this is the book for you.
