My sister was treated with Stage II breast cancer and the treatment was done in early January this year.  Doctor told her it is good if she do not have menstruation cycle else the cancer will reoccur.  Can someone please shed some light on this?  She is back in stress.

I finished chemo at the end of January, and I haven't gotten my menstruation cycle back.  My oncologist said that because I was young, he would expect it to return within a couple of years, but didn't mention any additional risk because of it (my tumor was ER/PR+).  I'm hoping to have kids when I go off Tamoxifen in five years, so I'm hoping I get my period back!

Since hormones can help some cancers grow, the doctors like to keep our hormone levels as low as possible. The return of a normal menstrual cycle indicates a higher level of hormones.  This will not in any way cause the cancer to return, but keeping the level low (or in the case of Tamoxifen keeping the receptors on the cells blocked) can help keep the cancer at bay if there happen to be stray cancer cells hanging around anywhere.

Thank you PatMom, this helps alot and makes sense to keep the hormone level low.
