I pray it's just a blip!

I pray it's just a blip and I'm not about to start this whole process again. I was diagnosed with dcis high grade Sept 09. I had a lumpectomy followed by radiation. I saw my breast surgeon for a follow up last week. I told my Dr about an area that felt different to me (same breast I had the dcis). She examined the area as well as the rest of both breasts then turned on her portable ultrasound machine to take a closer look at the area of concern. After looking at the area she said, "get dressed and I'll be back in to discuss what well do next"! Even though my Dr told me that she thinks it's probably nothing, I left her office with an apt. for an ultrasound at a breast imaging center and a script for blood work. I'm worried because, "if it was nothing" couldn't I have waited until Sept. when my next scheduled apt with the breast imaging center is. And, having to get blood work up tells me that my Dr. thinks it's something more, but doesn't want to worry me. Ha too late, I'm worried! I keep telling myself...80% chance it's b9! That does little to comfort me!

    To me, it sounds like your doctor is just being very pro-active and thorough, in view of your hx.

    I agree with eileen - I think the doctor is just being proactive.  I went for my 6 mos. mammo in April - mammo was fine but US found "something small on the internal scar line."  Breast surgeon (have my mammos and US done every 6 mos. at the Breast Center where my BS is) said it's probably a small cyst or seroma, but with my triple neg status, she wanted an MRI done the following week.  Needless to say, I had to be peeled off the wall for the entire wait for the MRI and then the results.  It was a small seroma, probably from rads which I was just 4 months out of at the time.  I'm not even going to tell you not to worry, because it is just a given that we will - forever, no matter what little thing it is.  But I wanted you to know that not everything they find is cancer again.  Good luck and God bless.

    I went in for my annual mammo in March, and there appeared to be a new density on my "good" girl. The radiologist said to come back in six months for a mammo, but my surgeon had me schedule an MRI. Both sides were done, even the now empty left side, and long story short, the MRI came back as normal, so probably I moved or something like that. Anyway, still have to get another mammo in Sept., but just letting you know that like LRM said, "blips" do happen, and that I'm hoping that this is all it is for you!

    thanks Eileen, Linda and Jennifer-   I'm hoping, too, that the Doctor is just being "proactive"  My mind has been jumping to all kinds of conclusions even knowing that chances are it's b9.  I had a follow up mri and mammogram in March; both were birads 2 so, I'm hoping the ultrasound will be also.             Thanks so much for listening...

    Hi, Even though you feel trepidation, your Doctor should always err on the side of caution.  I would be very comforted by her reaction of ordering further testing.  Always remember, time really is of the essence for you and all things should be thoroughly checked. Hope all goes well.

    I know my onc always takes my aches and pains seriously. I mentioned a pain in my right hip a couple of years ago. While he said it was probably nothing, his caution saved my life because he sent me for an MRI and a new cancer was found in my kidney and it was caught before the tumor got too big. I had been so worried about a bc recurrence. I had the kidney removed and I have been fine till recently when I went to my annual checkup in March the doc said there was a very small spot on my lung. Of course now I am terrified... He said to wait till next year for my next annual check to do the CT again. What is up with that? I can't stop thinking about it.

    I certainly understand how easy it is to worry about everything....

    Good news, the other shoe didn't drop!!! I had the ultrasound as well as a mammo and nothing showed that was concerning; just a seroma. I am soooo relieved! Now I can enjoy the rest of my summer!

    GlennaG:  To give yourself some piece of mind, I'd insist on a CT soon.  You shouldn't have to wait until next year to find out what that spot is.  I went through about a week of worry and that was long enough.  If I had to wait a year, I'd be a total basket case. 

    I'm praying that it's just a spot of nothing and that nothing else is ever found...

    Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking of asking for a new CT at six months. I know I can't wait the whole year.

    Great news, Hobie!!! Doing a happy dance in your honor!!

     Glenna, I'd try and get one SOONER rather than wait. You're doctor doesn't seem concerned, and that's a good thing. Did he give you any idea on what the blip was??  It's your body, and your history.  Peace of mind doesn't come easy for us, does it? Here's hoping for good results for you.

    Thanks Jenniferz for the positive thoughts.

    He said that 99% of the time these little blips are nothing at all. It is .03 centimeters. He didn't seem worried but of course I am...

    Hello again.  So, at my surgeons request last month (June), I had a mammo and ultrasound done on my left lumpectomy breast...turned out to be a small seroma.  I figured "great, no worries"  and I'll go back to regular follow-ups...I thought that I wouldn't see my surgeon again for another 6 months.  Well, she wants to see me for a follow-up in August; that's only two months from when I had my last follow-up with her.  I'm postmenopausal, have lots of micocalcs. and very dense breasts. Could that be a reason for the repeat visit so soon?  This is such a great place to air your concerns...thanks, Carol

    Hi Hobie,

    Just came across this thread again, and was wondering if you'd been back to your surgeon? Once dx with bc, we are followed a little closer than others, and, it amy be to that they want to make sure that the seroma dissovles on it's own.

    Hope your follow up turns out well.

    Perfect timing!  I have a follow up apt. with my surgeon tomorrow morning and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be told,  "Everything looks great, see you in 6 months!"

    The follow up with my surgeon went well and I was told, "Everything looks great, see you in 6 months!"  I can relax again for awhile at least!
