I've always had a tough time with dehydration when i run in the summer but this year seems worse because my long run is longer and because I switched from tamoxifen to zoladex plus arimidex, so I'm having more and stronger hot flashes.  I do run with a fuel belt with gatorade.  Any advice?  I had a tough time on my last long run and have now purchased a road ID in case I pass out.  (A good thing to have anyway, and mine says, in addition to name and contact info, no needles in the arm in which I have lymphedema.).

MOTC ~ I live in the California desert, and I've found that the summer heat bothers me a lot more this year, probably due to the lack of estrogen.  I guess I would really question running in the heat if you have a concern that you might pass out.  It sounds like you're assuming being found in a neat little position, but what if you collapse without warning and knock your teeth out, or suffer heat stroke or something equally as bad?  Is there no way you can run indoors somewhere?  I finally broke down and joined an athletic club, which I don't enjoy nearly as much as walking/running outdoors. But I've decided I just can't safely do it anymore in the excessive summer heat.      Deanna

P.S.  Getting out really early if I can  -- like before 7:00 -- is still okay.  And I sometimes use one of those neck coolers that you put in cold water.  They seem to help a bit.

I was sort of kidding about passing out.  I do stop when I feel signs of dehydration.  But I would like suggestions for handling the heat if anyone ahs them.  And I agree, getting out early is probably a must.

I would definately add some plain old water. It takes time to set up, but on longer runs I will drive or bike the course I am planning and drop water bottles at certain points. I drink water every 10 min. in the heat.
