a family member just informed  that 8 months ago she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.

She has not had a biopsy just two MRI's and two Mammograms. Will a Doctor give a diagnoses of Cancer  with out a biopsy? Is it standard  to go 8 month with out some sort of treatment?

None of this sounds right to me

any insight would be greatly apperciated

I agree, these pieces of information do not sound consistent.

For almost all types of breast cancer, you can't be diagnosed without a pathologist looking at a piece of tissue under the microscope.  The only possible exception that I know of is inflammatory breast cancer, which, as far as I know, is always diagnosed at stage III or IV.

You can have breast tissue removed via a mastectomy or a biopsy.

I agree -this whole picture does not sound logical to me, unless the family member has refused treatment or has a real whacko as a doc.

this doesn't sound logical to me either.  I will however play devils advocate.  Are you sure she didn't have a biopsy?  Not all biopsies are big surgeries; is there a chance she had a fine needle biopsy?

the stage 2 not being treated sounds unusual but is not neccessarily impossible.  My mother chose to not do tx after looking at the particular characteristics of her tumor and other family information so I know there are women out there that make decisions like that.

    good luck.
