Hi Jenn - for me getting my port put in was a non-issue. They gave me a drug to relax me, it didn't take very long and I felt no pain and went out to lunch right after. I don't enjoy my port now that it is in because I have to be careful about what shirts I wear since it is visible so I can't wait to be able to take it out but getting it in was really no big deal.
Good-luck to you.

Dear Jenn-
I had mine done in the hospital as an outpatient procedure. I was totally out of it and don't remember anything. I was a little "off" for the rest of the day but not a big deal.
It will feel like a mule kicked you in the chest (at least mine did)- so take your pain meds.

Hey Jenn, I got mine in my arm and the procedure was painless... took about 45 minutes. They hit a nerve in my arm which made my hand numb for a few hours, and for a couple of weeks, if I touched it/hit it wrong, it would shoot senesations down my arm. That has subsided (I've had it about 6 weeks now), But, I did need pain meds to help me sleep for several nights after getting it... just the throbbing and discomfort was more than I would have thought.
Good luck!!!

Hi Everyone!
Had my port put in on Thursday. I didnt think it was going to be a big deal but it is painful. I don't remember a thing I was put out which was good. But two days after I am still in pain. I didn't want to take any pain meds but found myself yesterday needing some. Thanks, again for all your advice. Jenn

I'm so glad this post is out there. I am getting my port put in next week and I'm nervous about it. I had my lumpectomy done last Thursday and I still have a drain in due to the nodes they had to remove. I'm still in pain from that procedure and my arm is numb. I'm hoping having port put in is not to painful but I'm starting to think I should just get used to being in pain.

Hello ladies.. Had my port put in Monday... Pain meds are my best friend right now... Did not think it would hurt so bad after a bilateral mastectomy.. Was I ever wrong. Can anyone tell me how long this will hurt? Tired of being in pain..
-
I just scheduled my port to be put in next Wed. I have to admit I'm not looking forward to the pain. I know it's better than iv's but considering I'm still in pain from the surgery. I agree sandiddstn I am tired of being in pain too. I'm glad there are others here who we can share our experiences with.

had mine done under genral anaesthesia and it worked well. Had it removed on Monday when I had my recon. I was glad to have it gone because it creeped me out and was a little uncomfortable. you'll be fine
