    Hi,

    Thanks for reading. My mother lost her mother to breast cancer when she was only 13. My Grandmother was 40. I have always known this, and feared that I would someday end up with bc.

    I have nursed 3 babies. While nursing the 3rd it was very painful to feed him off the right breast. I also lost pigment in my right nipple. My doctor was not concerned. 

    I have since lost my good insurance policy and am on Medicaid. I have noticed a small lump in my right breast. Pea sized. I am worried that I may have been over looking symptoms. Has anyone experienced pigment loss in a nipple prior to a Cancer diagnosis? Or painful nursing in a cancerous breast?

    I plan on calling the state run women's health department in the morning. I am worried because they only offer care to women over 35 and I am 34.

    Any change in breast tissue needs to be checked out.   I noticed my nipple started to indent or retract.  My gyn didn't think it was anything of concern and said she could not feel a mass but sent me for screeining. Turned out I had a small cancerous tumor & DCIS throughout the breast. My mammogram taken 7 months prior did not show a thing.

      If your clinic isn't able to help you, try calling the various cancer societies to see if they can offer assistance.  If there is a teaching hospital in your area, try contacting them.

    Hi,

    I think you should have this checked out.  I nursed 4 babies and with my last it became painful on the left side.  I did have Paget's along with DCIS.

    Thanks for your input. I made it to the Doctor today, she was wonderful... thankfully. I have a diagnostic mammogram scheduled for Monday.

    So... I had my mammogram and I am a little confused. The tech was not very conversational. She didn't tell me why I needed an ultrasound after my mammogram. I didn't ask... Then when the ultrasound was over she had me stay in the room and came back and said my doctor will call me soon and may refer me to a breast surgeon. I said okay and she left the room. Now I am waiting to hear from my doctor. Any ideas on what all of this means?   Thanks....

    Sorry the tech wasn't very chatty... I think some of them prefer not to say much for fear of unnecessarily frightening a patient (maybe?!). I would bet you needed an ultrasound because you're young and therefore probably have denser breasts... mammograms are often inconclusive with younger women, while ultrasound is better at finding things in dense breasts. I wouldn't read too much into it (I know, I know, much easier said than done)!! Hope you get some answers from your doctor soon -- the waiting is pretty much the worst part!!

    Pinkturtle, the tech isn't really allowed to say much. They leave that up to the Rad. If you had a mammo then an U/S, you had a diagnostic check up. Protocol for people that have a "suspicious" mammo, or find a lump, or other breast abnormality such as unexplained rash, pain, thickening, etc. (An U/S is less expensive..compared to havinga an MRI, which I have also had). My techs have never said anything about surgeon. Makes me wonder if (unless speaking out of turn) they saw something suspicious...let us know how you are doing. :)
