Hello everyone! 3 months after DCIS DX and finally tomorrow I will have lumpectomy 2.5 cm  without any nodes removal or biopsy . I am terrified of general anesthesia and shame to say that I will not consider it,my surgeon reluctantly agreed to local with mild sedation, but still wants an anesthesiologist in the room.I have severe mitral valve regurge and because of a "terrible habit" also dx with COPD ( these problems increase my fear of going under) Has any one had just local with sedation? I will be so grateful for the help.I'm really, really scared. Thank you

    Hello.

I had a lumpectomy with local anesthesia and sedation.  Since you are having sedation, an anesthesiologist does have to administer the drug and monitor you.

My surgery went just fine, and I did not have any problems.  I woke up soon after arriving in post-op and nearly ran out of there.  That's the big bonus with sedation - you don't have to spend alot of time in the hospital.  I'd rather sleep at home rather than in a hospital bed.

    Best wishes for your surgery.

Hello and thank you for the reply. I'm told by surgeon that the area  is about the size of a golf ball, including margins, was yours smaller? did you feel anything. I apologize in advance for all the questions I just really need reassurance. Love this website and all of you!!

You're welcome.  Ask as many questions as you'd like.

Regarding your question about feeling anything...do you mean feel the lump or feel any pain?  I'll answer both.  Yes, I felt a lump.  When I first found the lump, I thought that it was about almond size.  It was not painful.  The surgeon removed about a 3 cm by 3 cm area.  After surgery, I was sore, but I not in pain.

Hi, Pat:  Had my lumpectomy 4 years an 2 mos. ago-0--had local anesthesia with sedation-- actually woke up in the OR--and I talked to my anesthesiologist--I told him "somebody was singing in here and I don't like country music"---isn't that funny --had no problems--very little pain afterward ---did NOT do radiation or chemo--just went with the wide excision lumpectomry ( i don't know how large but it was bigger than 5cm) - and I go for mammos every 6 mos--then last year back to yearly (diagnostic type)---you should be fine.  I am believing I am a survivor of BC and will continue to  be and count my blessings.  Good luck and prayers for your surgery.

Wow Bobbi, you have no idea how your words have encouraged me! I can't  explain how much fear I have of general anesthesia,I had a very bad experience many years ago and though I'm aware of the strides made, I can't forget.... I was reluctant to consider sedation due to unprotected airways but because I don't believe that there are any other option I decided to go with what I felt more comfortable out of the two and hope that if something should go wrong the anesthesiologist will be quick to intervene. I will have a wire guided procedure first then off to OR.The surgery is at 2pm,but don't know when it will be over, if in the mean time they want to "serenade me" Country, Rock or Classic is all OK by me...

Thank you and all who have reply, maybe tonight I will be able to sleep even if just a little.Pat

Hello again, First I want to thank all of you for your support and encouragement before my lumpectomy  which was done under sedation and local anesthetic on Tuesday. Preliminary path results showed clear margins, surgeon took out 1 extra cm. tot of 3 cm. Now the wait.....I'm not sure what is worse now or before. Have any of you had to have a re excision? Is it common? I should have results tomorrow or Monday.Once again can't sleep or eat. Thank you for letting me "cry"

    Hello, Pat.

It sounds like the surgery went fine, yes?  I had to have a re-excision.  I don't know if that is common or not.  At first, I was bummed about having another surgery.  Then, I realized that with a few hours for surgery in the morning I would get alot of peace of mind.

The waiting always stinks.  Badly.  This is one thing that does not get any easier with time.

I hope that you will not need to have another surgery and am wishing you some peace while you wait for results.

Jus heard of lumpectomy results. The surgeon said path report confirmed DCIS, no invasion, no need for node biopsy. While most of the marging were clean there is still one  small area ( lower posterior) that wil need to be re-excised 1 cm  at most including clean margin. I was trilled to say the least about no invasion, but now I'm wondering if this new area could show different outcome after pathology or is this all there is to  it then on to radiation? I know I must sound like a cry baby., but I was really hoping for a "green light" ,so confused my head is spinning. thank you for your answers and support.

There is always a small chance that the other area might show something else but its pretty small.  I also had one "bad" margin and went for reexcision.  I didn't worry about it nearly as much as the first time.

Have you scheduled your next procedure?  Hope you can enjoy your weekend.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

was your second excision a success? no other DX but DCIS? I'm going to try  to take your advice, not to worry and focus on the surgeons words " No invasion,DCIS only and no need for any node excision"

There....!!if I keep repeating this, maybe in 2 weeks i'll be ready for procedure and finally move on...Have a great weekend.

I did my reexcission a week later--I was glad to do it so quickly instead of starting healing and then ripping myself open again.  I didn't have anything other than DCIS.   No ever said a word to me about node excision.

Now the left side is a bit smaller than the right but not really that noticeable.  And the incision is practically invisable which amazes me.

Hi...Two years ago I had a steriotactic biopsy, followed a couple of weeks later with a lumpectomy. I was given the "twilight sleep" med....remembered nothing, and certainly felt nothing.  Very little discomfort afterwards, too....But, I did nap most of the day, after I got home.

No need for a general....You'll do fine....

I had a lumpectomy with local and sedation today.  I was apprehensive about it because I've never had anesthesia before -- definitely didn't want a general, and would probably have gone with local only if they'd offered me the option because I'm a control freak...I would have asked for a mirror so I could watch everything!

I remember the nice tech who was in charge of moving my bed telling me to keep my hands inside as we left the preop area.  And then I woke up in recovery.  Nothing in between registered at all.  Didn't feel sick or groggy or anything except really dehydrated in recovery.  I made them move me from the immediate recovery area into the post-op room sooner than usual because I wanted to sit up and drink something.  Left about half an hour later, that was four hours ago and I'm headed out for dinner now with a couple of Vicodin under my belt.

It was a pretty small area on the upper outside of the breast, and no SNB.

I'm planning to write a longer post about my experiences later but wanted to post now in case anyone else is in this situation and worrying...

I am having a lumpectomy Friday with no sedation or anesthesia. I prefer a local only. Anyone else had it done this way? I am also have a Sentinel Node Biopsy the same time..
