Hi,

I was diagnosed with Triple Negative BC last year and now am BRCA1 positive.  If I've had radiotherapy on my breast, is it possible to get a mastectomy and reconstruction?

Yet to talk to my Oncologist about this stuff.

Thanks

Yest it is possible to get a mastectomy and reconstruction after radiation.  That is what I am doing--lumpectomy & rads in '07, mastectomy due to complications of rads in '08, prophylactice mast with bilat reconstruction to be done in a couple of weeks.  By all means talk to your onc about this, but also talk with a couple of plastic surgeons, who will give you better info about reconstruction.

I highly recommend you find a plastic surgeon who specializes in reconstruction (not just augmentation).  Mine is wonderful!  He's the reason I chose to have a bilateral + recon instead of a lumpectomy.

With radiated skin you'll have better luck with reconstruction using your own tissue (DIEP, SGAP, etc.) than you would with implants.  Radiated skin and implants don't work well together.
