COBRA retro active INCREASE in premium...CAN THEY DO THIS???
I am FREAKING OUT!!! Just got a notice from COBRA that my gov't subsidy expired and my premium just tripled but that is not what is freaking me out...I got the notice today, dated June 2, but they are saying it is retroactive to April 1st!!!!!!!!
Can they do this???????????
There is NO WAY I can come up with an extra $1,800 to catch up or the extra $600 a month! To top it off tomorrow is my first post treatment mammogram! Not sure if I have enough valium to deal with both COBRA and Mammo tomorrow along with my echo and an infusion!
Can I please have that breakdown I have been putting off since my dx now!

Just sucks to have to deal with ins issues along with this bc taking over lives....There is a patient advocate (www.patientadvocate.org) website that may be worth calling or contacting to help you know the best way to handle this extra crapola....Wishin you great scans..............

Have your breakdown at your first appointment! Actually, I'm serious. The place where you get your mammogram or infusion or anything else should have access to or at least info about how to access social services support and that is what you need right now. Walk in, register and then start crying and tell them you just got this horrible COBRA info and you can't afford any more treatment and you don't know what to do. There's a lot of help out there if you can find it, and that's what social services does all the time--connect people with help!
Frankly, there are times when I wish I didn't have any health insurance, I would have gotten a lot of financial help. If only I had known at the time. I too, went through the COBRA thing--only they didn't pay any claims for 3 months, told everyone who submitted claims that I didn't have insurance due to a "clerical error." My credit is still trashed, and will be for many, many years to come as I try to get the radiation center to resubmit the claims. I was not offered social services help until my last week of treatment, and by that time I didn't qualify for any help because treatment was almost done.
The whole insurance thing SUCKS.

somany - thank you for the link...I had that website at one time but had lost it.
I am just so sad and overwhelmed...If the cancer doesn't kill me the stress from all the extra gifts and b&^% s(*& that comes with a cancer dx will!
Just when my life was moving forward and it felt like we were going to get back to living with my 'new norma'l, yet another rug has been pulled out from under my feet. The savings my DH & I have worked so hard to build is completely gone! Our 401K and IRA's have been exhausted. Our credit cards are max'd out and we are so far in debt I can think straight. I know I am very blessed as I can get coverage through my new employer, it just means starting all over to meet higher deductibles after having just meet the current deductibles on this plan.
I just took my emergency valium for my first post treatment mammo...I am scared, anxious and worried the trauma will cause a massive LE flare up in my chest. I just want to go and bury my head in the sand like an ostrich and pretend this bc never happened.
NativeMainer - My fear...I don't have the money to catch up on the retro active increase in premium...will they deny payment of my last four treatments??? I have an echo, mammo and infusion today...will they deny paying those??? I was almost denied treatment at my onc's office once because the computer said I had not paid my premium (previous employer paid the premium late every month!). I have three more herceptin infusions and then a decision on if I should have my port removed and if so when...add to that f/u visits and rx refills... I already received a grant for Herceptin and had exhausted that grant by March...3 more to go at $8k each...my head is spinning! I kinda of wish I did not have insurance either because I don't qualify for further assistance. I was laid off a month before my dx and was unable to work until Nov 09...8 months no income and of course I did not qualify for unemployment due to being 'unable' to work with all my treatments. The hits just keep on coming and I am feeling very bruised...

O2B, depends if you got laid off or resigned. I googled "ARRA and COBRA" and this is what I came up with. I thought the COBRA was extended to Sept 2010 at least.

News Statement
Statement of Assistant Secretary Phyllis C. Borzi on extension of COBRA subsidy eligibility to May 31, 2010
Washington – Assistant Secretary of Labor Phyllis C. Borzi today issued the following statement regarding the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) and the premium reduction under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA):
"On April 15, 2010, the President signed into law an extension of unemployment benefits and the COBRA premium assistance that helps with the cost of health benefits for Americans who lost their jobs. This extension provides a COBRA premium subsidy for eligible individuals who are involuntarily terminated from employment through May 31, 2010.
"The new law also provides retroactive eligibility for individuals who lost their jobs after the prior COBRA subsidy expired on March 31, 2010. These programs are vitally important to the economic wellbeing of workers who lost their jobs and their family members.
"ARRA provides a 65 percent tax subsidy for the cost of health benefits, making them much more affordable for the unemployed and their families. Millions of individuals may be eligible to receive a premium subsidy for up to15 months.
"This administration is committed to putting Americans back to work so they can rebuild the financial fabric of their lives, and the Labor Department is working hard to make that happen."

o2bhealthy: this sounds like an error to me. You were laid off in April 2009 (correct?). Then you were eligible for 18 months of COBRA (April 2009-Sept 2010). And you should be eligible for the COBRA subsidy for a maximum of 15 months, which should see you through the end of this month, when the full premium amount is due. The original subsidy was just for nine months, it was later extended to 15 months. Is it possible that your employer is not aware of the extension?
COBRA Premium Reduction —The premium reduction applies to periods of health coverage that began on or after February 17, 2009 and lasts for up to 15 months.
You do mention that you returned to work. Has that just happened? I presume that once you returned to work, your new employer's health insurance plan kicked in and replaced COBRA and the subsidy also ceased. If there was no gap in coverage between COBRA and the new plan, I don't think they can refuse to pay for pre-existing conditions.

MaryNY - Thank you for the information! I finally was able to get through to my COBRA representative and the letter was sent in error (whew) so the subsidy is valid until end of Sept at which time the premium will increase until COBRA runs out in Dec.
It was just such a blow to get that letter and then not be able to get in touch with anyone for clarification....my imagination and worst case scenario was running amuck. Add to that my first post treat mammo was the very next day and I have truncal LE so I was terrified of the whole procedure. Mammo was CLEAR
so that is something to celebrate!
I have been working part-time for some time and just recently went full time and qualified for group coverage. My employer & I have been talking to the group coverage people and there seems to be some confusion as to what my qualifying event is since COBRA is still in effect until Dec. I really wish I understood all this health insurance stuff better...
-
O2b, from what I understand, COBRA is OK if there is no alternative to get on a plan at work. I could be wrong. (I hope I am wrong as I'm sure the COBRA' reduced rate is cheaper). The qualifying event is that you are eligible now for group coverage. Let human resources figure it out for you. How much will you group plan cost? And is it a good plan? Wish you luck. I worked for a health ins company but have been retired a couple of yrs and the rules always change.

ob2healthy,,,,it's just so exhausting to deal with the abrubt change from life as we knew it to being a fulltime bc patient....Docs, appts, scans, meds, bills, take over our everyday life!!...and then to try to even comprehend the insurance mumbo-jumbo, the policy and billing might as well be written in Chinese....The frustration of it all could not possibly have anything but a negative effect on our poor worn out bodies and minds...I'm glad you got a little clarification from Cobra and congrats on great mammo results!!!!
Being diagnosed 10/09, we just reached out deductible at years end...to be hit again Jan/10 to start all over again...I have been fighting an office visit charge for each of my rad treatments ($30 x 30 treatments = $900, these do not even count towards my deductible) it is a real pain to do the paperwork required to oppose these but they are just not fair...I was told that as long as I keep challenging these ( I have paid all other fees for my rads) that this will not go into collection..I have just made some leeway on these as they have eliminated almost 1/2 of these charges...
My sister had max'd out her credit cards (addicted to gambling) was able to consolidate them to a much lower amount through a credit counseling group....She had to miss at least 3 payments first to be able to do this, I don't think she was concerned about her credit score..since she is married to a doctor (who is oblivious to her gambling, knows nothing about her credit cards) and still gets whatever she wants...She wastes so much $$$$, she's sick and very much in denial of her gambling, I would be a wealthy woman if I just had her losses for a year.....Just a shame!!!

All I can say is CANCER and everything that comes with it SUCKS!!! But that is a differnt thread...
Thank you everyone for your input and assistance!
I am going to go have a piece of cake...maybe that will take my mind off of the mounting pile of bills on my desk!
