Please help.  I am not understanding  the difference.  My cancer was diagnosed on the stereotactic biopsy,  so will it be the same info on the lumpectomy  patholoogy report??   Or do they analyze different things?? Thanks so much.. still so scared, getting my lumpectomy report on june 11. maryvanessa

Things can change from the biopsy report vs the lumpectomy.  WIth the biopsy they only have a small sliver to look at where with the lumpectomy, the entire tumor comes out and there is more tissue to evaluate.  My grade changed from 1 to 2 after the lumpectomy.

Exactly.  The biopsy removes only a tiny portion of tissue, the lumpectomy removes the whole thing (hopefully).  It's possible to discover something new/different when there's more tissue to look at.

My diagnosis remained the same, though.

Your lumpectomy pathology report is what your treatment will be based on.  Good luck and keep us posted.

thank you all for responding so quickly.  I can only hope they dont find anything more on my path report,  I am still in shock over the diagnosis, I really dont know how much more i can handle.

whatever it is , i do know one thing, it was caught in time, Thank God for that.

The lumpectomy will tell you more about grade and size.  And with a lumpectomy, there is a small chance they might identify microinvasion which isn't the case with the biopsy.  In my case, the size of the DCIS got bigger but nothing else changed.

    Hang in there!
