reaction to CT scan smoothies?

Options

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with IDC, 70% of the tumor being DCIS.  I went for a cat scan/bone scan done, with 2 injections and 2 barium (sp?) shakes for contrast.  I spent the entire day throwing up, only being able to hold something down at 8:30 (shakes were had at 9:00 am).  Has anyone else felt that way?  Is that abnormal?

Wow, sorry to hear you had that reaction!

The barium drinks usually give me a bit of diarrhea after, but doesn't last long.  The contrast they sometimes give via IV usually makes me feel very nauseated right after.  I always ask for a bag, because I'm sure I'm going to throw up, but so far I haven't.  The feeling is intense, but only lasts for about 5 minutes.  I've been told this is common.  The last time the tech said she'd put the contrast in slower, sometimes that helps (but didn't help me!).

Next time ask for anti nausea meds first (or if you have some from chemo ask if you can take them), and ask the tech to put the contrast (the iv stuff) in slower.  Hopefully you won't have that reaction again!

    Good Luck!

    T

I also felt sick after my last CT exam. I never chucked, but I wasn't quite right for at least an hour after :(

All the puking was worth it I guess... the CT scan and bone scan both came back fine!  Add a clear MRI (clear nodes) and it's a celebration trifecta!

Small victories are the best sometimes :)
