Test Done Today!!!!

I met with the genetic councilor today. She went over my family history and explained about the BRACA and the BRATS tests.. She told me that my risk is 32% that I have the mutation. Thank god my insurance cover this in full. I hate all the waiting for results, its all I ever do theses days. I talked with my Oncologist about the options that will be available to me depending on the results, so that gives me something to research while I wait.
I was surprised when she said that if the test is inconclusive she would still recommend bi-lat mastectomies and removal of ovaries, have others be recommended this too?

Yes,

Hello KWolf, yes, the waiting is awful. Do you think the genetic counselor would recommend these options because of your family history?

Mine also recommended a bmx with or without the results, but I had the BRCA1 gene mutation. I had a strong family history of BC. My sister was dx at 44 and I was initially dx at 39.

(sorry i was suprised i deleted the whole post above...thought I edited it)
My risk was 50% of having the gene that my sister and first cousin has...and I tested positive. I am not sure what the rec would have been if I did not test positive, but I did get the rec from three different BS after it was back. How are you now? Any news? Waiting is indeed a challenge. (Hugs)

The waiting is nerve racking. I tested positive for the BRCA1, with an 88% chance of BC reoccurance and 32% for ovarian cancer. I tested after I was diagnosed with BC, but this was the help I needed to determine if I should have a bi-lateral. Please let us know when you hear more, take care, sending happy thoughts your way.

Hi all
Sorry i vanished off the face off the earth... I got the results back from the tests and I am please to sat they were neg...
My oncoligist thinks I am still at high risk for reoccuranc. 44% in my lifetime... I can not take tamoxifen because of a family history of DVT.
I am taking my time to think about BMX and I am just begining to look into reconstruction and what options I have. So if anyone can help with a idiots guide to reconstruction I would be greatful..
I am going for a MRI on thursday, this will be my first test since the last surgery, so I am a bit worried about what they might find this time... please keep me in your prayers.

One of the best resources for learning about reconstruction is The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook: Issues and Answers from Research to Recovery by Kathy Steligo. I got a used copy from amazon for a dollar. She goes over all the options, gives lists of pros and cons for each as well as talking about how to find a good Plastic Surgeon that works for YOU. I couldn't have gotten through recon without this reference.
