Density in "good' Breast

I am four years out since my diagnosis with IDC, and was feeling pretty good about things until I met with my surgeon this afternoon...................and I honestly thought I had handled things well until I got home. I had my mammogram on my remaining breast about 2 weeks ago, and never heard anything....never got "the call" and assumed that things were all right. At first my surgeon said that things looked good, then he asked his nurse to bring him the report, and when he got it, he said, "Let me look at this" and left the room. Panic. He came back in and said that there was an area of density that wasn't there before, but it only showed up on one of the three films, and that the radiologist had recommended that I have another mammo in 6 months. Then, my surgeon said that he didn't think that I would sleep for 6 months, so he has scheduled an MRI for me.



I am a nervous wreck. I am 58, so what could this be????? The report that I read did say that it was "probably benign", so what could it be? A cyst? Normally don't have cyst-y breasts, but then, have never had cancer, and never been 58. So if not cancer, anyone have an idea on what it is?



It is circled on the film, so that has to be it, and no, I didn't see it on the others, either..



Anyone have any ideas?

    I can't answer your question, but the same thing happened to me at my last mammo appt. It came back as BIRADS 3; probably benign. They suggested I have a MRI in 6 months just to check to see  if this area remains the same or if it changes any. This was back in January, so I still have to wait until July. I am freaking out.

    However, I have done a lot of research on the internet and I have found most of these are benign. Which makes me feel slightly better. I wish you luck on your test. Let me know how it goes.

    I am going through a similar situation, only the area they are viewing is in the same spot that the cancer was in first time around.  (I had a lumpectomy).  I go to the doctor on Tuesday, and after reading some posts, I think I will request a biopsy just so I can breath easier for the next 6 months.

    I had a R mascetomy in 2000. Since that time the surgeon has kept an eye on a "dense area in my L breast. At the time I was 38. She mentioned to me that breast do get denser as we age. Well in Dec 2009 this dense area for "some reason" caught extra special attention of my gyno. I do not know what was different this time, but I can tell you I had just had a mammogram a few months before. Because I passed my 6 year mark they stopped the yearly MRIs. Bad move. THIS new cancer DID NOT show up on the mammogram.  I am blessed to have an assertive and cautious dr. He sent me first for a ultrasound biopsy. It didnt show on the ultrasound either. So I had a MRI guided biopsy, and wella!  I am now a 2 time cancer survivor, masecromy Dec 2009, chemo and radiation. It was in my lymph nodes, too. So girls, make sure you are comfortable withyour dr and that he is more concerned FOR you than he is concerned about what your insurance company thinks. FOLLOW up scans are often challenged these days. FIGHT for your lives! and be a WINNER!  hugs terri in Michigan

    I had my mri yesterday, but won't know anything until tomorrow or Friday.  Monday at the latest. So, my anxiety level hasn't really dropped. I'm going on the assumption that things are ok because no calcifications were noticed.  Hope that's true again.

    I'll let you know as soon as I find out.

    Oh, Terri.....I should be horsewhipped!! I'm sorry I forgot to post to this thread. I'm a caretaker of an elderly parent, and still work as a substitute at schools, and just got busy!!



    Having said that, things appear to be normal. I spoke with my surgeon, and he said that he would still like me to have the second mammogram in Sept., which I will do. I'm thinking now that maybe I moved, causing a blur. Surgeon was very relaxed about it this last time, so I feel all is well.
