The new study which is posted on this website states:

Between 10% and 20% of breast cancer patients have recurrences or new primary tumors in the ipsilateral breast after lumpectomy. Recurrent disease increases the risk of breast cancer mortality by as much as 300% compared with the initial tumor, said Arasu.

Wish I had known this when I had my lumpectomy.

That is exactly why I'm having a BLM as soon as chemo is done.  Of course, when we're making the decision of lumpectomy vs mastectomy, we don't have all the facts as to staging, receptor status, risk of recurrance etc.  No one's fault, just the way it is.

But I have to say that these types of facts weren't discussed with me whatsoever.  I was just told 'with a lumpectomy there is a 1 - 2% higher chance of recurrance' but the survival rate is the same.  Hindsight is right!  I wish I would've been smart enough at the time to ask '1 or 2 % chance higher than what?'

Good info though. Smile Thanks for sharing
