Can anyone please tell my why my eyelashes are falling out a month after chemo?  I was just starting to feel better about everything and everyone said i was so lucky because I didn't lose my eyebrows and lashes, but now they are falling out.  Somebody please help!

My eyelashes and eyebrows both fell out a couple weeks after my last chemo; I was prepared because a friend who had been through chemo before me had it happen to her too and she warned me. I don't think it's at all uncommon. They grow back pretty fast. Good Luck! Ruth

My lashes did the same thing.  I can't remember but I think my brows were already fairly thin by the end of chemo.  But my few remaining lashes fell out weeks post chemo.  I remember at the time being SO disappointed.  However, the new ones were almost right there.  You'll likely be able to feel them ever so faintly with your finger very soon.

    Good luck and gentle hugs.

My eyelashes fell out about a month after finishing chemo...they came back in super thick and long, then proceeded to fall out again...grow back....fall out again; I think about 3 or 4 times.  This is *very* common.   I noticed that each time they fell out again, there were some that didn't, so I didn't look totally eyelash-less.  Now they're back to stay : )

Over a year out. I'm on round 7 or 8 of falling out, coming back in.  What one of the other posters told me was that eyelashes grow slowly so they tend to all fall out at once after chemo and it takes a long time for them to fall out at different times and fall out and grow in at so many different rates that it is not noticeable.  Makes more sense then anything else I heard.  Maybe I just want it to be true....

I finished chemo on May 11 and did not lose all of my hair, eyelashes or eyebrows until May 15.  I thought I had escaped it but was not so lucky.  I shaved my head back in January when I started chemo but still had a light covering of hair.  Now I have no eyelashes, hardly any eyebrows and no hair.  It is like adding insult to injury at this point and very disappointing.  I hope it all grows back quickly.

I lost my lashes and brows toward the end of chemo.   The lashes came back fast and all at once, but the brows were completely gone for three months before anything started growing again.  My lashes have stayed put and are actually thicker than before.  It's depressing when they go...but keep the faith!   They'll be back soon.

    Jenny,

It is like being kicked when you are down isn't it?  I lost mine a full 2 months after I finished chemo.  From what I understand, hair and eyelashes grow in cycles.  Chemo resets the cycle so instead of one or two eyelashes falling out occasionally, they all fall out at the same time.  It takes a while to get the cycle reset which is why some people lose them more than once.  The good news is that eyelashes actually come back pretty quickly.  Especially if you have dark eyelashes, you will see them come in within a few days.

If it really bothers you, go to Target, buy some nice fake eyelashes and some clear glue and use those when you are out and about.  I used them for about 2 weeks, put them on every morning before I went to work.  Super easy.

    Good luck!

Hello! I'm getting so depressed over this eyelashes issue!

My chemotherapy ended on Jan 23rd 2013 ( details below, in my signature). In the mid of my chemo my eyelashes and eyebrows started to fall, very depressing it was but the thought of getting back to normal in the matter of eyelashes was a cheering news. As my chemo ended, after 3,4 weeks my eyelashes with the hair and eyebrows started to grow!! It made me very glad.

Unfortunately now! after a month of regrowth my eyelashes are falling out! It has made me very depressed and worried. Can't something be done in this matter? Any oil application or something else treats this? except for the fake eyelashes. Please help! How long will this cycle continue? It's very disheartening...

I was told by a nurse navigator that it would happen when my hair was growing back in. She said during chemo lash growth stops and it is the new lashes growing in that push the old ones out. I read somewhere, probably on here that you should be very gentle in the existing lashes so you don't pull them out. If you must wear mascara to use the tube forming kind like Kiss Me mascara so you don't have to rub the lashes with makeup remover. The tubes just fall off with warm water.

How ironic this was brought back up bc I looked in the mirror yesterday and noticed I didn't have ANY bottom lashes and serious thinning on the top.  I am 7 weeks post chemo.

Hello DeliriumPieSmile Thank you for sharing some information. I have been very gentle with them. Btw, I do not apply any mascara. So that may not be the reason. But thanks in advance i'll know now which mascara to buy, if I ever feel like using it. Does exposure to strong wind for a long time, would make my lashes fall??? Is it possible? Have they seriously become so fragile? Surprised

Not sure about the wind but I sure feel like my evetything is fragile right now, lol. I think I have always lost a lot of lashes anyway, but I always wore a lot of mascara and would notice losing around 4 or 5 a side when removing. Hoping your lashes are back soon. The different growth cycles idea seems very probable. I attribute having to continue shaving my legs while I have nearly zero hair on my head to the growth cycles. Sooooo not fair! Hugs!
