    Hi my name is laura.

I hope I will get some support on this forum. I had reconstruction done four years ago. I have to make a decision to have my implants removed. I don't know how this will go over with the plastic surgeon. I hope he will listen to my concerns and be honest with me. I have been in so much pain since my implants were put in. This is a very hard decision to make and i don't know what will happen. I just cannot stand the pain any more. I don't honestly know if it will go away. I am hoping  that my muscle will be ok as it has been stretched for so long.

    I am scared to death.

Laura:  If you have Post-Mastectomy Pain Syndrome - PMPS - there is a possibility that removing the implants might not help. Some women have pain after mastectomy - as many as over 50% - and often the pain does not manifest for sometime after the initial mastectomy, which is often about the time the exchange surgery takes place.

But apart from that, and since you mention that pain commenced as soon as implants were placed, seeking consultation with another plastic surgeon might be helpful.  You might have something else going on which could be resolved or remedied.  Are your implants hard and are they misshapen at all?  I am just wondering if you have capsular contracture.

There is a thread on this website entitled "Post-Mastectomy Pain Syndrome" under the "Surgery, Before, During and After" forums.  You might read through the posts and see if you find some answers there as well.  I'll bump that forum up for you.

I am sure there will be others who will come and offer their thoughts....hang in there...

Laura:  Capsular contracture in the higher grade can be VERY painful!  Please do not tell me your plastic surgeon has known about this and has let you agonize through this for years?  I think you need a new PS.

I had capsular contracture.  it was horrible.  My implant looked terrible andlooked like a mishapen brick.  I just had it taken out and a DIEP flap done - what a difference! Couldnt be happier!  Good luck to you!

It has been a struggle. I have consulted with my family Dr..for years He finally referred me to another plastic surgeon. I have an appointment on June 28. I feel so bad. I just feel now that I don't what to deal with any more complications. I don't know what the New PS will say. I had a short appointment last December. I hope to find out more then. I am in so much pain right now. I had no idea this would be so complicated.

    thanks again

    Hi, Laura,

I don't have any suggetions for you, as I didn't have reconstruction, but wanted to welcome you to the boards here and to tell you I'm so sorry for the years of pain and the disregard of your doctors. I hope the new one will be attentive and have good answers for you -- and I just wish your appointment was a whole lot sooner than June 28!

    Be well,
    Binney
