older women vs chemo

Options

Hello ladies!

My mom is 85 years old and had a mastectomy a month back.

Now she is supposed to have some radiaton and then they will put her on arimidex.

Her onc said it was too risky for her to have chemo at that age.

She is quite a healthy woman for such an age tough.

I would appreciate your valuable advises on the matter very much.

Thanks so much;

Nicky

    I would not do chemo at 85. I don't see how the risks could outweigh the benefits at that point. Best of luck to you and her! Ruth

    My Mom is 82 and she was on chemo, but she's stage lV.  The cancer is in her liver and bones so she didn't have much choice.  They needed to hit it hard.  The side effects were very harsh, and they had to take her off it after only a few treatments, but the chemo shrunk the hell out of her tumors.  She's now on the anti-hormonal Femara and radiation.  As long as your Mom isn't stage lV she should probably stick with the Arimidex. Chemo is rough on everybody, but especially the elderly.  If she goes to stage lV, and it goes to a vital organ then she has a tough decision to make.

    Thanks a lot ladies;

    I've already had a second and 3rd opinion. No onc is positive about giving her chemo.We will stick to Radiation and arimidex.

    Wishing all the best to you and your loved ones...
