Here we go again...
Had a good mammo of the left at 9 months check up following lumpectomy for DCIS with Mammosite rads in left breast, but got called back to look at new calcifications in right breast at site of 2003 IDC tumor bed (had ADH in same breast in 2005)... Breast radiologist suggested wait for 6 months & then take another look. I am 70 years young, with very dense breasts & lumpectomy in June 2009 was 100% ER+ and 75% PR+. I am opting for a bilateral mastectomy soon, rather than wait, so made an appointment with my breast surgeon for next week for hubby & I to talk about having this done with no reconstruction. Talked it over with my PCP this morning, who feels it will be a good move now while we are both fairly healthy - my husband is 72 & very robust, but who knows the future? I have diabetes & lots of related complications, but am stable right now. Will also talk with my GYN...
Am I nuts to want this over with?

No, I too wanted a bilateral mastectomy but they wouldn't do it. I can't help but wonder if the doc's really look at how many women have a reoccurance of dcis/calcs. I keep seeing 1% but judging from this board it seems like it oughtto be much much more. Granted this board is world wide... it just seems like so many get it back in the other breast. I would have the other removed if I could convince someone to think it was the right thing to do. Best of luck to you and you really sound like a very young 70 year old. Peace...

Thanks, Carcham!
My wonderful breast specialist completely concurs! His first question when he walked in the examining room for this appointment was "how many biopsies have you had?" (He has only had his breast center for a couple of years) After I answered 6 or 7 - he asked a couple of more questions, and then told my husband and I that it is time to end this ride! He then went on to describe the bilateral approach, and we set the date for June 24th - turns out to be the date of my 3rd lumpectomy, which he did last year! I am so relieved! I finally feel I can EXHALE knowing that I will soon be free of this constant worry! I try hard to stay young and positive, and this good news just adds to that! Getting prepared with online shopping for "pocketed cami's, a wedge pillow, and nice soft prostheses - since I won't need to balance the weight, I won't need the silicone ones, which I'm reading can be hot..
Peace to you, and Hugs!
Mary
