Very Scared - Could this be IBC?

Hi - I'm new here...I've been reading about IBC for over a month now and it's safe to say I'm scared to death, like just about anyone would be when they're afraid they might have cancer.  I'm 39 years old.

First off, I have an appointment with my OB/GYN 4 days from now, so that's the first step I plan to take.

About my symptoms, I developed an itch about 2 months ago in my left breast.  It was pretty persistent and felt like it was both on my skin and underneath.  I was scratching a lot until I realized that I was developing a red welt (that went away when I forced myself to stop scratching).  I was hoping the itching was from some skin infection and used antibacterial soap and ointment, but it didn't go away, although cortisone cream (only used twice) and Gold Bond powder did relieve the itch temporarily.  Then I noticed a non-painful bruise-looking spot about the size of a dime that didn't seem to go away.  That's when I started getting worried and started researching my symptoms.

About 2 weeks ago, I developed a little bit of aching in my underarm and the next day, the itch had greatly diminished, although it was still there - just not so frequent and intense.  Within a couple of days, the underarm ache also subsided, but I still occasionally feel a tightness under there.  I've been constantly pressing around my collarbone to see if any lymph nodes may be swollen there, and a spot on the bone itself is now tender, but I guess that could be from all my pressing.

Also, after the first underarm ache, I felt a sore spot at the bottom of my breast, a couple of inches wide, right at the bone - I can't tell if I feel any thickness there or not, but that has also greatly subsided (although I do feel an occasional achy sensation there).

The bruised-looking spot has shrunk, but when I touch it, I can feel that itch, as if that's where the itch originated from.  Also, the nipple area gets a tickly or tingly feeling many times during the day.  A quick scratch usually takes the itch away for a while.  The nipple and areola are VERY sensitive and although this sounds weird, I've squeezed the area between my fingers and it's painful when I do that, as if there are veins or ducts or something underneath the areola that are infected.  I don't know how else to describe it.

Both of my breasts are pretty warm to the touch...I haven't noticed this one being any hotter than the other.  There isn't any swelling.  Any redness on it seems to be from my underwear or clothing because it matches the redness on the other breast.  But now a couple of other faint bruise-type spots are developing on the same breast.

I should have made my appointment a couple of weeks ago when I started getting really scared, but being phobic of physical exams has held me back.  I've never let the doctor do a breast exam on me - that's how bad it is, so I'm not quite sure how I'm going to make it through this exam and any subsequent tests, but luckily, my desire to live and be with my family has won out over my fear of doctors.

Anyway, I know itching, purplish splotchy spots, aching and lymph node pain can be symptoms of IBC...but has anyone heard of the disease being limited to these symptoms?  Can anything else cause these symptoms?  Any input would really be appreciated...it's going to be a long weekend waiting for my appointment Monday morning.

And to all of you out there who have survived or who are going through it now...God bless you - I wish you the best.

    Hi Alison,

It's a good thing to see your doc about your symptoms. I'd be persistent if they try to fluff you off. You are doing great by researching prior to your appt. More than likely you will not have IBC. However, if it is, you are doing all you can. Waiting to let a doc know your symptoms is the worse thing you could do. Hang in there and know you aren't alone.

Thank you, Lexi...I guess at this point there isn't anything I can do but wait for my appt. Monday morning.  Thanks for posting a reply.

I now have a new symptom - I noticed last night, but it's very obvious this morning...the areola on that breast is now swollen.  The color of the areola hasn't changed and it's soft.  The nipple and areola are still very sensitive to touch, but the itching in the breast and nipple has greatly subsided.  Oh, boy, it would be nice to be able to fast forward through the weekend!

Waiting is definitely the toughest part. Again, you are doing what you can do at this point. If your med facility offers a breast care specialist, that would be great. Otherwise, trust your gut and just make sure you get some clear answers. The not knowing or being afraid can be paralyzing.

I hope that you will find some peace as you await your appt.

    Alison70,

It is definitely a good idea to get things checked out and not wait, but do take some comfort in knowing that most people who post on here with questions about IBC end up NOT having cancer.

Best of luck, and keep us updated.

Thank you both, Lexi and Lori - I suppose so many people come here looking for answers because even if you Google just one possible symptom and the word "breast," all you get are pages with IBC info.  Well, I guess that's why we have doctors...trying to self-diagnose for this type of thing is a bad idea.

I realized after I posted that this is a thread for survivors, people going through treatment, and those who have been diagnosed recently, so I feel a bit selfish for coming on here and stressing about a few symptoms I'm having (in my mad rush for answers, I didn't look at the details of the thread).  I don't want to take from anyone who is currently dealing with IBC or who has been through it already.  So at this point, I'll just wait and see...I'll provide an update either way, once I know what's going on...

Thanks again, ladies, for your answers to my questions...

    Alison70,

Feel free to ask away, it is fine, at least with me!  IBC is different than other types of breast cancer.  If "googling" gets you diagnosed earlier (if God forbid you have IBC) than it is worth it.  I hope you are back to share good news!

Thanks for all the support, everyone.  I thought I'd come back and post an update since so often I see people post, but they never come back to say what happened!

I haven't officially spoken again to my doctor since my appointment this past Monday, but here's what happened...she did an exam and nothing stood out as any real concern to her...my breast didn't appear abnormal and she couldn't feel anything.  She did, however, send me for a mammogram (my first!) and an ultrasound because of the itching and pain, which had both greatly subsided by the time I went for my appointment.  I asked about IBC and the probability of it not showing up on a mammogram and she said that they digital ones they're using now are much better at detecting abnormalities.  Since I've never had a mammogram before, I have nothing to compare this information to.  She also said that even if everything is clear on the tests that if I see ANY changes at all in the breast to set up an appointment right away.

My doctor will be sent the final results and she will contact me, but the radiology doctor came in and told me that there was nothing on the mammogram or the ultrasound.  He said that he understood that IBC is a concern for women, but that itching and occasional pain in one breast isn't that abnormal.  I am assuming that my doctor will look at the results and will also give me the same information.  We'll see...

Since the itching (that lasted over 6 weeks) has really diminished, and since the localized pain I felt only lasted a few days, I feel somewhat satisfied with their answers at this point.  If everything was persisting and getting worse, I'd think differently.  It's just like me for my symptoms to go away as soon as I make a doctor's appointment - on that day, I couldn't even find that little "bruised" spot to show my doctor.

I hope I'm not being careless by not pursuing it farther, but at the same time, with the symptoms seeming to slowly disappear, I don't know if I should still demand a biopsy?

I want to thank everyone who sent me well wishes and to everyone on this forum, I pray for the very best for you.  I may not know exactly what so many here have gone through, but this experience has opened my eyes and has given me a glimpse of the devastation felt and the kind of strength a person needs to get through a serious disease like cancer.  I know I'll be more vigilant about my own health in the future and whenever I hear about or meet anyone who has had to deal with this disease, I'll remember how it felt when I thought there could be a chance I had it myself.  I know it's not the same as experiencing it, but I have a new awareness about it that I've never had before.  And to anyone who feels alone, please know that there are people out here thinking about you and praying for you, even if we don't know you personally.

Of course, if this issue with my breast goes any further, I'll be back to update.  But as of right now, I'm just going to monitor the situation and take it one day at a time...best of luck to everyone...

    Dear Allison,

Hello, Hope you're well and have gotten your answers.

I'm going thru something similar right now, my symptoms started in Feb and we're now in May and Doctor's just keep me waiting for more office visits. I didn't have tiny bruises but I do have all the other symptoms you had along with a bit of swelling of the breast and underarm area.

Did the doctors ever tell you what caused your itching and brusing and pain?

    Many Blessings,

    Julesz
