I need some recommendations for exercise DVD's.  I've seen several recommended in the "post your daily exercise" thread but I'm going to be specific in what I'm looking for, I hope you can help:

I'm not in great shape so I know I can't do any thing really strenuous... and my main focus is aerobic, although any toning/shaping that goes along with that is fine.  Ideally I'd like something that I can use now (as WimpyMe) and yet it allows me to ramp things up as I get fitter.   Does that make sense?  The RS DVD's look interesting (Ruth, are you reading?) :) but I don't know where to start, there are so many. Also, the one clip available to look at, he does this one song and it's over so quickly... in the DVD does he move on quickly to the next song?  Does anyone know anything about Joel Harper's Firming After 50?  It looks interesting but it's just so hard to tell from the cover!  (I am not, in general, finding the ones aimed at older people very appealing.  I'm still YOUNG!!  I'm 58, but I'm still young!!)  I have a yoga DVD that I like but I need something to get my heart going when I can't or won't go out for a walk (like when it's too hot).

I looked at a couple of local stores and found nothing that I thought I could handle (most were super-sculpting-super-cardio sounding). I'm probably going to have to order online and no matter where I buy, I won't be able to return, so I'm hoping to get some ideas to give me a better idea of what to buy.

Thanks for any suggestions... thanks for listening to me ramble on :)

    Hello, NatureGrrl.

I do not have a specific video recommendation, but there is a website that you might want to try.  It's www.exercisetv.tv.  I've tried and liked a number of these workouts using cable tv on-demand service.  The website has the same videos as the cable channel.

It has a number of free full-length videos and clips.  So, you can try the videos before you buy.

Thank you -- I've been off the boards, and off my computer, for that matter, but I'm definitely going to use that site and see what I can learn!    Wish our library had more so I could figure things out that way but for some reason it's a big void in the collections.  Anyway, again, thanks!

I've heard that P90X is good but very hard! I know my local library has it.

Naturegirl, the Leslie Sansone Walk Away the Pounds is definitely a good one.  Look for the one that has 1 mile (15 mins), 2 mile (30 mins) and 3 mile (45 mins) all on one DVD.  They are low impact cardio.  You can start with the 1 mile but will probably move up to the 2 mile relatively quickly as the time goes by fast.  The moves are easy but you get a good workout.  It's nice to have the 3 for those times when you don't have a lot of time and need a quick 15-min workout.

I bought both RS and a FIRM DVD but only used them each once.  They are not bad but I just haven't gotten into them yet.  The Leslie Sansone I've done many, many times so I guess that's my favorite.

Someone also suggested Netflix to try out DVD's.  I don't subscribe so not sure.

    Hope that helps.

Hi, I am reading Smile. All the RS are good. I will look at his website right now & see what he has available & get back to you.  I am 57, so if I can do them, you can too (and you are correct, we are, indeed, young!!!!).

OK, I checked. He has the 'Sweating to the Oldies' 4 DVDs set; all of which are fun, and I see he has a new 'Sweating 5' out that looks good too. I also went down in the basement and looked at my 'library'. Other fun ones if you can find them are; 'Groovin' In the House', "Dance Your Pants Off' and 'Broadway Sweat', which is show tunes. All of them are easy to catch on to, have people of all ages, shapes & sizes exercising, and have fun songs. (Try 'Sweating 5' and then you can report to me, because that's the only one I don't have Smile).

I agree with Patoo on the Leslie Sansone it is very good and you'd be surprised at how quickly a mile goes.  Marion mentioned the PX90 and I saw the guy who is the PX90 instructor on "Kirstie Alleys Big Life" last week putting her and her "Chubby Buddy" through the workout and even though it looks intense they were doing a gentle version and it looked good.

Gilad from "Bodies in Motion" is great. You can check him out on TV several days a week and record them to do them when you want or purchase DVD. Doing his workouts you can get aerobic exercise and great toning. You can start out moving at your own pace...substitute walking for jogging and stepping for jumping and move up as you want to. The TV show is 20 minutes of aerobics and 10 of toning...DVD times can vary.

Thanks for all the ideas!  I like the idea of renting first via Netflix but I haven't been a member for awhile, maybe I should start up again... but it looks for sure like there are at least two I'd enjoy.  I don't have a DVR so I can't record stuff to watch later (durn it) but this should get me started.  Thanks!!

Question:  Are the Leslie Sansone Walking DVD's for walking in place kind of exercise?  I'm assuming they are but I wanted to make sure before I bought them... when I look at the description on Amazon it's not totally clear to me.  Thanks!

Hi Nature, yes the Leslie Sansone are walking in place.  You could also check out your PBS tv stations they have exercise classes at different times.

I just watched Joel Harper's "Firming After 50" show on PBS a couple of nights ago.  I followed along with Joel to try the exercises and now plan to buy his video.

Otherwise, I've always liked Richard Simmons' exercise videos, partly because I'm inspired by watching a variety of regular people in all shapes and sizes exercising.  The Ali McGraw yoga video is good, too.

Leslie Sansone it is... along with probably a RS.  I like some of the PBS things when I can catch them but their hours and mine don't agree and I don't have any way to record things, so I really need the DVD's.  Thanks for all the ideas!  When I get back on Netflix I definitely have a lot of things I want to check out!

Hi all, I am almost 2 months post exchange. Last night I went to gym for the first time since Oct. 09, when first diagnosed. Of course, I was smart enough not to go near machines or weights as of yet, although PS said I could start off with 2 lbs. free weights and do eliptical at the lowest pace.  However, I went to my "Zumba" class.  I went at a slower pace than my normal routine, and did not lift my mast. arm up I was very careful not to let the new girl fly around, also protected my augmented breast.

Had a good time, and it felt good to break into a "healthy sweat".

Wishing everyone a healthy and happy day.
