Hello, everyone--

I'm recently diagnosed (10 days ago) and scheduled for a lumpectomy.  I have grade 3, 6mm lesion.  The MRI looks good.

I'm having a terrible time getting my head out of the fear and depression that this has spread to my lymphs and I'm just looking for some encouraging words to help.  The devastation is more than I can bear at times.

I'm so impressed with this site, my aunt, who just finished her treatment, told me it's the best.  It has gotten me through some dark moments.

    HI MHP,

I know when I was diagnosed two years ago, I didn't know a thing about breast cancer or any other kind. It wasn't until 5 months later did I find this site. I also had a lumpectomy (actually 2 for clean margins). I knew that cancer could spread to the lymph nodes, but I didn't know about auxillery and sentinal nodes. When I went into surgery I really wasn't even thinking about that. I was a stage 1. All I remember was the nurse telling me after I was out of surgery and wasn't even fully awake that they took out 3 sentinal nodes and it didn't go to any sentinal or auxillery nodes. I was very relieved to here that. I know you are thinking.  You will worry yourself to death until your surgery. Think positive and even if it did there are treatments and alot of support on this board. So many great women here. Very kind and supportive. Good luck

    MHP-

this is the hard part, the waiting.  I remember waking up from my lumpectomy surgery and the surgeon was standing there smiling-- as far as she could tell she got her margins and the sentinel node biopsy was negative.  At that moment, I realized how worried I had been....

kk is right, no matter what, there are treatments and you and your oncologist will decide together what those should be.  Remember, many of the treatments, hormonal, chemo or radiation are very powerful and really help the vast majority of people to never have this experience again.  Your surgeon and other doctors can really help you with this.

I would also suggest that you think about anti-anxiety meds, maybe ativan just to get you through this part--- it is only a short while- and it can help you clear your mind.  You need your rest and your strength for this-- and anxiety can sometimes prevent us from getting enough rest.....

Best of luck =the surgery is really relatively quick.....

    keep us posted.

Thank you both so much for your kindness.  This is definitely some form of water torture, the waiting!  I spent the day painting, really helped.  Warm wishes to both of you. As every person I've talked to so far has said, the BC community is really amazing.
