extra saline during chemo treatment
Is there any benefit/advantage in having some additional saline during a chemo treatment (at the end) ....to increase hydration, or to help with side effects, etc.?
Does the extra saline weaken/lessen the chemo benefit?

No the saline does not weaken the chemo benefit. It does help alot with hydration esp. in the first 24 hours.
It took me until my 3rd treatment before I thought to ask for it. My protocol had a 500cc of saline on standby- if you/insurance company has to pay for USE IT!

Hi Janinvan,
I got a terrible headache with my first AC treatment, and so after that they always gave me extra saline and it didn't happen at all. Also, they started giving me extra fluids the day after my treatment when I'd go in for my Neulasta, and it helped me feel immensely better from the nausea, fatigue, steroid jitters, etc.! I had tried to take lots of fluids on my own, but apparently I couldn't get enough because I felt like a new person each time after getting the extra day-after fluids.
It's a great question about whether it dilutes the chemo effect. Nobody ever mentioned that to me, and I was in such rough shape that it never crossed my mind to ask. You're smart to be asking ahead of time. Let us know what your doctor says, but I'd definitely ask for the extra fluids unless there's some contraindication. My nurses were at odds as to whether it would help or not, but it sure did for me!

I would get fluids the week after treatment. Helped me to be able to eat and drink when I was on A/C. Not sure how I would have faired without it, plus I would get the best oxygen high afterwards...LOL Felt like I was floating on a cloud!

I got saline after every chemo. It's standard in the facility I went to.

Leah.....interesting....I have close relatives where you are, etc.
How long approximately does the additional saline run...?
Which facility do you go to...?

You mean you got intravenous saline -- the week AFTER...?
-
angelsabove....:....do you mean that they just added a saline drip--to the end of your treatment...?
That's good, I guess (similar to me--- but not for any significant time)

I had AC and I was so sick the first time and she said 'we'll run through lots of fluids this time and that should help' so I assume it was the saline because I felt soooo much better the 2nd round. They run saline for about 30-45 minutes after the chemo is done at my hospital (Alberta Canada).

I would get my treatment and then a couple of days later I would go back to get a bag of fluids. Sorry if my post was confusing.
It did make me feel much better.

I had my chemo at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem. I don't remember how long the saline itself took (chemo finished a year ago).
