DCIS + IDC - Not Sure Where I Belong
Comments
-
I have been lurking for several weeks on this DCIS forum. At the time of my diagnosis (Mar 2010), I believed that I had the 'good' breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy 3 weeks ago. The results showed more than one tumor (DCIS and IDC). I am not sure which board to belong to or should I do both? My BS said that I shouldn't go on the Internet for information but I feel that this board has been invaluable. The experience of the generous people who share their information is overwhelming. Thank you for sharing!

Sue visit the 'Calling all stage 1 sisters' thread...many of us have DCIS, IDC or both. You will find a wealth of information and support there. Just enter the thread name under the search feature found at the top right of this page. Welcome to the club no one really wants to join!

Sue, don't worry. I was DCIS in the beginning too, until my BMX showed DCIS, LCIS, ILC, IDC and ICC (yes, a whole load). The only board I would belong right now would be Stage II. But I go on many boards - Chemo, depression, breast reconstruction, and I feel very welcomed everywhere. Of course, I wouldn't post in the Stage III and Stage IV, as I can only imagine what it would feel, but can't give an opinion about what these wonderful ladies are going through. You'll find your place as well. Think of it this way - you can go BOTH on the DCIS and IDC forums!
Welcome on this wonderful board - you know, after all the stage and diagnostic dont matter. What matters is that we are all in this together, supporting each other, and it helps us make this journey easier.
Hugs

I'm sorry that you've had to join us, and sorry too that your diagnosis turned out to be more than just DCIS.
You are welcome anywhere on the board (except for the Stage IV forum, which the Moderators try to restrict to those who are Stage IV). Thinking from the standpoint of which forum will be most useful to you, what's important to understand is that your diagnosis, staging and treatment will be based on the more serious of your conditions, which is the IDC. There may be treatments and tests that are recommended for you, because you have the IDC, that women with pure DCIS don't get. Chemo (which you may or may not require), Herceptin (if your cancer is HER2+) and the Oncotype test would be examples of treatments/tests that are not offered to women who have pure DCIS. And even in situations where you are offered the same treatment as someone who has DCIS, the rationale for that treatment, and the benefits that you would get, might be different because you have invasive cancer. The rationale for your taking Tamoxifen (if you are ER+), and the benefits that you would get, would be an example of this. So what this means is that you will find women who are in a more similar position to you in the Stage I and II Breast Cancer forum. You are always welcome here, but that forum will probably more be helpful to you, as you learn about your diagnosis and work your way through your treatments.

Thank you so much for your information!!!! I will be having a mastectomy because of the results of the lumpectomy. I am having an MRI to rule out any cancer in my right breast since the mammograms didn't show any tumors and the ultrasound found only one tumor. I am leaning towards having them both removed but will wait for the results of the MRI. Thanks again for all of your help and I will switch over to the other forums. All the best to everyone!
