Anyone considering running the NYC Marathon in November?  I am a 4 - 5 mile a day jogger.  The NYC Marathon is on my bucket list. A friend just told me that her group of colon cancer fundraisers are looking for entries.  It got to me to thinking...

I would love to hear about anyone else that is doing it.  Are their any breast cancer fundraisers looking for entries?

    Hello, chinablue.

I signed up for the 10K for the Marine Corps Marathon.  (Yikes...what was I thinking?!?)  The MCM has opportunities to raise money for Komen.  I do not see the NYC Marathon specifically listed on the Komen site, but there is an "open" option to run a marathon (or half) to raise funds.  The website is www.marathonforthecure.org

    Good luck!

Chinablue - go for it!  It's a wonderful, wonderful event.  I've run it three times - I finished with decent times twice before cancer, and wanted desperately to celebrate survival by running it last year.  When I was in treatment, I imagined myself standing up there on the bridge at the start one more time, the wind in my hair, strong and confident.  So, I signed up for Fred's Team (which raises money for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center - I designated my funds for breast cancer) . . . and then suffered one injury after another all summer.  I made it to race day, albeit WAAAY undertrained, and because I was so much slower than I used to be, I didn't start on top of the bridge (as in my fantasy), but at the back of the start on the lower level.

It wasn't what I had imagined; it was BETTER.  I had an absolute blast jogging the course, slapping hands, smiling at people, stopping to smooch my boyfriend, just taking in the amazing scene.  It was way more fun than the two times I ran the race seriously.  So what if I dropped out after 19 miles?  That was my choice (I was worried about aggravating my foot injury, and I already have plenty of finisher's medals), and it didn't detract from the experience one little bit.

I hope you're able to run it and I hope you have a fabulous time.

P.S. Friends who've run way more marathons than me - Boston, Chicago, the works - say that NYC has BY FAR the best crowds.

P.P.S. If you do run it, I'll be out there on 4th Ave. in Brooklyn cheering for you.

    Linda

I live in Dc and would love to run a marathon.  I'm thinking the National Marathon in the spring but you have to qualify, which I'm hoping to with the Army 10 Miler in the fall.  I feel I have to work up to it fairly slowly because I tend to get injured when I add too many miles too quickly.  Right now my typical run is 5 miles bit I do a long run every week of 12 miles.  Got some pains (knee, balls of feet) and protrusions (bunions, bone spurs) I have to deal with before I add more miles.
