Good to hear things have gone so well, Susan.
I've only had 2 tx so far; just have some warmth in the zone. As for tx time, they are not zapping you for 10 mins. My folks say it's actually maybe 2 mins. But positioning you, changing clothes, etc., the whole procedure ends up being 10-15 mins.
The gals are really nice at my treatment place, and I love my rad onc. Looking forward to being done with these daily visits mid-June.
-
I had my set up appointment today and I am now a happy wearer of lovely sharpie green x's on my chest. They did cover them with tape so they will stay longer. Now lets just hope I am not allergic to this tape. I go back for the simulation May 14. So looks like I will start May 17 with my treatments.
Susie64
so glad you had an easy time. I am hoping I will too. Trying to be positive now that I have the dates and know when it will be over and hopefully be cancer free.
-
Ok, got clearance from my ps today....1 week early! Now I have to call the rad onc back, again, and reschedule my simulation. Ready to go so i can be done.
-
Hi gals,
I had my first treatment yesterday {05/04}. It was easy and I was in & out so fast. I met with my RO and nurse to ask questions. All went well. I had my second treatment this morning, as the machine had to be serviced later in the day. It took aprox 20 minutes from the time my foot hit the lobby until I was driving away from the center completing my 2nd treatment. Once the guy positions me the way he wants me, he leaves the room and the actual treatment lasts anywhere from 2-3 minutes. Then, I hop off the table, put my top/bra and "hair to go" back on and leave. So far, so good. I have not noticed any "side effects". I hope everyone is doing well and continues to do well. Two down & 33 more to go !

Hey Georgia, from Bama--You and I are neck-and-neck on our tx. I'm going for my third today. I'll be thinking of you. I about fell asleep on the table yesterday. It took awhile longer, since they did more x-rays, but my experience has been like yours. In and out. I've got some warmth in the treated side, but that's all so far.
-
Hello ladies. I, too, just had my second treatment, so I'm not really feeling any side effects yet. My question is do we start using cream the doc gave us now? Is it preventative? Or does it not do anything until our skin is irritated? I was prescribed XClair. I am scheduled to see the doc soon, but I thought some of you ladies might know the answer before I get in.
-
Thanks for posting you treatments, Ladies. I go on 5-11 for simulations and tatts. I get zapped on the chest wall, lymph nodes, sub-clavicular nodes, and sternum. Fun times ahead, huh?
-
SHAVING question!!!!
I have very little hair on my head, no boobs, and I refuse to also have hairy armpits!!! I draw the line at this one!
I shaved the night before my first treatment. I am only on day 2 but will have 4 treatments total done later today since I am doing twice a day rads. I am having both level 3 axillary nodes radiated. I am wondering if the hair will stop growing or do I need to invest in an electric razor? Other ideas? Things are ok now, but I will not live like a jungle woman! lol.
-
The nurse told me if my hair had not started growing back under that arm yet, that radiation may cause it to not come in . My non effected side has come back in but I have only had like two or three hairs on the surgery side. I think I am going to wait and see before spending the money on an electric razor. Now just keep your fingers crossed it doesn't start growing back before the 17th when I started my treatments.
-
Met with RO yesterday who changed the field of treatment. Since I opted for ALND last November, he'll radiate breast area only. But he still wants me to do 25 plus 6 boosts - taking into account grade and TN status.
Kinda interesting, last fall he recommended foregoing the extra surgery and dealing with the nodes in radiation... now he says I made the right decision... the extra nodes that were pulled were clean, so I can avoid what would have been unnecessary extra rads. Hindsight, geesh.
I start May 20, finishing July 5. Cannot wait! Did the planning and simulation yesterday. Now hoping all the marker marks will disappear... only faded a bit in the shower today... mmmm...
-
Lori, my mom had rads with her first bout of cancer in 1996. She hasn't shaved her underarm since. Well, that didn't sound right, did it? She hasn't NEEDED to shave her underarm...
-
One week of rads done, and I'm already tired of this. I know, no whining. I have a short drive to my tx center, very pleasant people there; it's all over with quickly. I think it's being tied to the routine that's got me bummed.
As for when to put on creams--I started the day I had my first zap. I have an afternoon appt. time, so in the evenings, every time I go in my bedroom/bathroom, I add more cream. I put on some after my shower in the am, too. Once I get home from rads, I'm just wearing a t-shirt with nothing underneath, for more air circulation.
-
I also started the creams after the first zap. I use a jojoba cream they gave me (a wealthy former patient donates it to the center, for every patient) in the dressing room right afterwards. Then I use my rx Biafine at night and other times when I can get chance to put it on. It says ok to use generously. Although one of my rad techs says a little goes a long ways..but thats because she doesn't want the stickers over the x's on me gummed up. But my doc says to slather it on and I do. So what if they have to change the stickers now and then. I do try to avoid the edges of the 2 stickers and they've only had to change them once so far. I just finished my 12th treatment. I have VERY sensitive skin and so far I'm doing quite well, even tho I was a little red after the very first treatment. No problem so far. I'm trying to follow all the gentle care suggestions as well. It's quite a fast procedure and the hour and half drive each way every day is actually not bad after all. Making friends with the other patients. But I do rejoice every Friday!

WHEW, done with my 25 rads to whole breast and on Thursday they did my final measuring for boosts, and ANOTHER TATTOO, this time it's an oval drawn in green marker around my incision, and the tattoo marks the outer edge of that oval, and now I will be going to another machine, the techs all told me that the last 5 are the easiest, they will be easier because they don't penetrate like the other rads, and they are aiming at the incision so that any cells remaining in the area of the scar tissue will be out of there too. I did get a little bit red, but was able to continue working through it all and still wore my dream bra. My daughter ordered me 3 of them in the beginning, and I couldn't have made it without them.....ordered online through Dream Products. They were a blessing. I asked if I will be getting burned on the boosts, and they said not really.....so am expecting a good week next week. I have decided not to do any of the hormonal treatments, I am 64 years old, and have had a few problems in the past with blood clots in superficial veins in my leg. I swayed back and forth at first, but because I am grade 1 and tumor was 3mm, I am thinking that this will be all I need. ER PR + HER- I would love any imput on this. OH, I need to say that all I used during treatment was Pure Aloe Vera Gel, the center gave me, and it worked on me so well, I don't know if it depends on the skin, but this was a breeze for me, and hope I made someone else feel better about it by saying it was more a nuisance than anything else, getting through the 5 weeks, and now 1 week to go seems so good to my ears. Have a good weekend all!!!!!
-
Suse64, which bra from Dream Products did you get that was comfortable? There are a couple that look like they might be good. At night I have rigged up an old soft t-shirt from hubby that I cut shorter and up the middle a bit and I tie it up in the middle where it makes a soft cup and keeps skin off of skin. So far, I'm doin' pretty well skin wise.. so far. I'm 70, and not tired more than usual, "yet", but could happen from now on. I'm grade 1, estrogen + Her- (I haven't learned all the codes yet) but my tumor was under 2. I decided to go with the 5yr hormone treatment, but to keep a very close watch on it. I'm going with Femara. I don't have bone density problem...so far, so can take it, but if I start losing bone bad I will change to something else. Some are blood clot danger some not I believe, but of course check w/doctor. It's all such a personal decision with so many variables and we're all different. Congratulations on doing so well through it all and that you're almost done!!!!!
-
itiz....believe it or not, the sleep bra combo pack is what she bought for me, and so comfortable that I don't feel like I have one on....and at night I sleep in an old tshirt.
-
Suse64, do those have a seam up the middle? It kind of looks like it but I can't tell from the photo. I have to have seamless in the inside cup. If seamless I'll get some.
-
Itiswutetiz......it's not really a seam, its like a dart, and it left a mark on me, but other than a mark, it did nothing to bother me, went away quite soon after I took it off. It is at the bottom of the bra, and it has hook fasteners on the front side, and oh so comfortable. The dart goes about half way up the cup side, so maybe it would bother some, but I had no problem with wearing it every day.

Happy Mother's Day, Ladies!
-
Thanks for that relieving and soothing description. I am going for set up today and probably simulation Wednesday. They are not sure, because I actually just had my second surgery 6 days ago, but want to get Rad done before off for Denmark June 19th. Will also enjoy the benefits of salt water off Danish coast - though much colder!
-
Hello All - Just had my simulation done this morning. Start date is next Wednesday for six weeks.
-
Yesterday had 2 hour staging work for Radiation, which starts tomorrow Wednesday and although it may be another day for the Rad nurses it wasnt for me. They didnt explain very well, rushed me through things, told me lies (like 'you have to stay still in the MRI machine for 45 mins or we have to start over', when it actually was only 20 mins and they didnt want me to be mad if it went over time). The tatooes were quite uncomfortable because they said I didnt have enough "padding". Also then they took pictures of my chest with arm above my head with a digital handheld camera, which I thought was odd and strange (I asked why after and they said so they dont mix me up with another patient. All in all it was a bit shocking and fast paced. This is the first time getting it "off my chest" so you are getting the big bang from me, sorry if depressing. Im actually in good state, but bad morning. Have any of you others had digital pictures taken like that?
-
Hi SueHan-
I just got back from my staging work half an hour ago. Luckily my tech, a really nice young guy, explained everything really well, including the fact that my hand and arm could go numb during the process. I'm guessing you were in a CT scanner rather than an MRI, and yes, you have to lie still huh! Feels so weird when your hand is going numb, I was thinking "is this what lymphedema feels like????" They did the same digital photos with me; they took about 3 pics. It's one more way that each time you come in they follow a set of protocols that make sure it is you, it's the correct breast, etc. etc. I had five tattoos, the first one stung and burned a bit, but after that it didn't seem as bad. (I have no idea how people can get big tattoos everywhere, man that would HURT!)
I think it is great when people post like you just did because no one wants to get caught off guard anymore than they already have. That's what these boards are for, right?!? I'm starting next Tuesday, so we'll have to keep each other posted (same as Leslie1962 as well!! Hi Leslie!)
Linda J, it's late, but happy Mother's Day to you as well!
Later!
Kim

SueHan: Sorry to hear about your experience. My sim guy explained every step of the way, to the point of saying, "I'm turning on the overhead lights now." He prepared me for the photo, too, and I was sitting up for it. And my tats were like pinpricks. I have sweet gals who do my rads; I wish I could send them your way.
My first week of rads went really well, but I am completely wiped out by the end of the day.
-
Hi all, I had my set-up today as well. I too had digital pics taken and it did weird me out a little. My tech was pretty good at explaining as he went. I also now sport 3 teeny tiny tattoos. I was in the CT machine but only about 15min. My left arm is my tightest one and it was uncomfortable to hold it over my head for so long. I am tired now. I find these Dr appts emotionally exhausting. I have my simulation next Thursday and will begin the following Mon. I am thinking of asking to put it off 1 week so I can get through the last week of school for my kids. There is always so much going on at school the last week and i don't want to miss anything. My oldest is 'graduation' from 5th grade!
-
Hi Thanks for all your feedback! I am going in for appt now with doctor to give me orientation of "the angles the RAD will aim for", and with your responses can ease up knowing the digital pictures are standard at least. I guess my follow up surgery last week, on the one hand found no DSIC so great, but on the other hand the doctor thought the radiologist over reacted in suggesting the second surgery at all. Once the ball was rolling couldnt prevent the 2nd surgery, so I have a bit of pent up feelings to let out. Will go the the gym after my appointment today for that! Also have school end of high and middle school for my kids coming up, but not much for parents at this stage of the game so starting Rad tomorrow.
-
Hi Leslie1962: You will be just a day ahead of me to start. We'll have to compare notes.
-
I am not even pink yet. I'm just warm to the touch. My RO's nurse today pronounced "that's the best-looking chest I've seen all day!" I feel very fortunate. My DH and I went out to dinner last night, and I about fell asleep during the meal, but other than the fatigue, things are going well. Being tied down to the schedule is a nuisance.
-
Well, out of the Chemo (Feb 2010) thread, and into the Rads (May 2010) thread!
I had my "mark up" appointment yesterday and will probably start the rads in about 2 weeks.
One thing about the tattoos: they are nothing more than a single pin prick. The big black ugly marks are just sharpies. They will come off. Of course, they cover them with some sort of clear tape stuff in the meantime.
I was told not to bother investing in expensive creams. A simple aloe cream would work fine.
My Rad oncologist also told me that in all his years of treatment, he has never had one person encounter the cracked/weakened ribs side effect.
One good thing, since my hair has not started growing under my arms yet, I probably won't have to worry about that for a while!
Retrievermom, like you I'm going to be a big whiner about the fact I will need to be there everyday! I've not had to be anywhere everyday since I retired early about 4 years ago!
-
Michele: Now I feel really guilty. I shall not whine. It's just that I sit at work, making progress, and go "gotta leave for rads," or, having lunch with friends, gotta schedule around rads. Ok, note to self: create better attitude. This is tons better than chemo.
