Antidepressant that doesn't cause weight gain?
I'm thinking of taking meds, I've been slowly sinking deeper into despair. But I'm VERY concerned about weight gain. I once weighed 300 lbs but lost 130 about 9 yrs ago. It's a process and I work on it every day. During the beginning of chemo I gained 22 back, but with just one more week to go I've lost about 9 of that....and want to not only lose the other 13 but try for even more -- lessening the chance of recurrence, better w/my lymphedema, etc.
Clearly the last thing I need right now is to have an extra obstacle thrown in my way -- not only would it not be healthy physically for my situation but I think emotionally it would do more harm than good in my case.
Any suggestions?
TIA

Drugs rock! I didn't realize it but I was sinking more and more into a constant state of depression and it definitely changed my personality. I took the last three weeks off of December as I was done with the third step: radiation. Lumpectomy and chemo prior. Anyway, I barely got out of bed until I decided to go to my internist who found the lump in the first place. She found the right Rx for me and I am back to normal and then some. You're going through hell right now. Let the wonders of medicine help bring you back. PS I havent gained any weight. Actually I am now more active and have lost a couple of pounds and I am finally jonzing to get back to the gym!

I always thought one was less likely to, since they do not generally prescribe it for anorexia? I think it was LEXAPRO.....See if "LEAF"is out there in cyberspace, she knows a lot about meds.

Talk with your dr or therapist. I've been taking an antidepressant for nearly a year and haven't had weight gain. It didn't solve my problems but it helped get me on a more even keel and better able to deal with things. Weight gain is not an automatic with antideprssants, there are many you can try, and if you don't like one you can go to another. I wouldn't let worries about "what if''s" stop me from at least talking with my physician about getting help. Best of luck...

I take Celexa for depression. It does not interfere with Tamoxifen or AI's .. and the good thing is, there is no weight gain with this medication. There is another medication ... Topamax, which is a mood stabilizer, and actually results in weight loss. You might check into either of these meds.
Best wishes,
hugs,
Bren

I agree with Bren, Celexa doesn't have the side effect of weight gain.

Some anti depressent might or might not cause side effect..
Its better to consult it with your physician.
