Bad smell during chemo - is this true?
I was told by someone that you smell bad during chemo. Is this true?

I feel like I smell bad. It's a yucky "sick" smell. But my husband says he doesn't notice it. I wonder if he's just being nice...
-
I don't think he's just being nice,it's probably true.I never smelled any different during chemo, and neither did most people i know who have been through it.Probably just your mind playing tricks on you.Don't worry about it,you have enough on your plate for worry.hang in there and good luck with your treatments.

I didn't notice any sort of weird smell and neither did my dh, but I did notice that mosquitoes and other similar critters didn't bother me as much. The dog and cat still cuddled with me, so either they noticed and didn't care, or even their sensitive noses didn't notice anything or at least enough to bother them.
Actually, I think I probably smelled better during chemo as my sweat didn't smell at all during chemo and for several months after. I could work out and be soaked to the skin, and my shirt would still smell nice and fresh even if it was drenched in sweat. It was the oddest thing. I'm almost 2 years out from chemo, and didn't have to start using deodorant till a few months ago.
-
My girlfriend always took me to my appointments and she would often mention that she smelled something. It would always annoy me, but I would tell her, "yes, it's me". Even my cat would notice the smell, always sniffing more than usual after my treatments.
-
That's interesting, NatsFan, because I haven't needed deoderant since starting chemo (Nov 09), either, and we both were on TAC. My last tx was Feb 15 and still do not need it even after workouts.
I never noticed a particular odor with chemo (and no one mentioned one) except in my urine the week after a few of the txs. It was so strong, I had to run the exhaust fan even after drinking gallons to flush the chemicals out of my system.
The worse part was the constant weird taste in my mouth. I didn't french kiss for months! ;->
-
My kids, since they have no tact, would tell me that I smelled like chemo during the AC. I am on Taxol now and they don't report the same thing.
I do sweat less, so it is not a typical body odor issue, just a chemical smell.
-
Maybe it is depending on the treatment you are getting? I'm sorry to seem to make a big deal out of this, but I am a "smell freak", my sense of smell is way above ordinary. I dread the time when it will be even further enhanced due to the chemo.
-
I don't think I smelled bad during chemo in general- my hubby didn't think so. I did notice towards the end that I could smelled "like chemicals". Not offensive- just weird.
-
See, for example, I can smell myself if I take antibiotics, even if others tell me they can't smell a thing. The chemicals part I could stand though.
-
I totally notice a chemo smell. It is kind of sweet and icky. i HATE it. But, my dh has assured me that only i smell, he does not. He really has a nose for smells. I asked him if he was just saying that to make me feel better and he said no. I totally smell it, the first week after a treatment.

I thought I smelled too...a chemical smell..I asked my best friend..who would have told me and she said no...my DH never said a word...but I still think I did..I think my bathroom smelled like chemo...I remember this odor...it doesn't smell like that any more and I don't think I do either. I think..how can we NOT smell different..with all those drugs going into our bodies.
I don't think it is a "bad" smell..just different...just use scented soap and perfume...you should be ok. -
I remember that my urine smelled terrible until the chemo had been flushed out each time. I don't think I smelled, but if I smell certain things that I did during chemo, like certain Plug Ins, etc., I get nauseous now. Good luck.
-
Oh I so remember the plugs ins...they would make me feel sick to my stomach. I still can't use them, just talking about it makes me nauseous. My urine had that funny smell too, but I will always remember my cat with that sniffing all the time after my chemo treatments. He smelled it and I am sure others did too. They were just being kind
-
I didn't notice anyting different until about the 2nd round but I did smell different. It smelled like chemicals, my husband noticed it too. It only lasted about a week and a half after each treatment and once chemo was done for good it was gone too.
-
I had 3 treatment now 3 more to go..i starting to notice some body odor ..My husband told me he do smell a bit of chemo in me..maybe it mental?Worst when i sweat a lot...
It will go away for sure so not my main concern

I went thru chemo from September till January (TC x 6). I remember notiching that I had a distinct, different smell......I said to my husband once that I thought I smelled like an elderly person in a nursing home?? It was hard to explain. I often would get in the tub, not only to allieve my aches and pains, but to try and get the "stink" off me....(LOL).
-
OMG, so glad to have found this thread. It has talked me off the ledge today. I have been bothered by the smell, mostly in the cancer armpit.
Then I read that it may be cancer that is smelling. I panicked...cancer still there ?! ooohhhhnnnnnooooo
Thanks all for sharing this.
I want to believe it is the chemo. I want to believe it is the chemo. I want to believe it is the chemo.

Whaeva mine was definitly chemo smell. Wosmell it on my pillow when I woke up sweating. First tx, I couldn't figure it out and kept looking for cat litter around, my DH said he didn't smell anything. Then I realized it was me. ick! But only I smelled it. I also smelled it in my pee, but I kind of expected that. I also smell Herceptin now that I am just on that, so no, you are not crazy.
-
I dont notice a paricularly different smell on me or my urine but just the more than usual sweat i get from the hot flashes. Yesterday, i just had a shirt on for around 4 hours and i noticed the smell of sweat even without exertion. Not anything chemical, though.
However, my sense of smell has heightened. I feel like a woman conceiving! I can almost tell what my mom cooked up in the chicken even after she showered. And who has just been from the restroom even just to pee? The real problem is when everybody's in the car with windows all rolled up. Mix of perfumes, cologne, forgot to brush thir teeth, and heaven- forbid, fart. -
I am so stuffed up from chemo I can't smell anything. No one has said I smell. I hope I don't.
-
I never noticed any kind of smell during chemo and my DH says he did not notice that I smelled any different either.
-
Scientific America had a short article recently which explained why some people can smell a strange smell in their urine after eating asparagus. Turns out it is even more complex. Some people metabolize the constituents of asparagus so their bodies eliminate the wastes with a different smell. But only some of those people can actually smell it.
So. I think this means that each of us metabolizes the chemo (an food) in a slightly different way, some of us produce wastes that some of us can or cannot smell.
I am a smeller. I could smell the chemicals after chemo (docetaxol), and I can smell herceptin. I can also taste and smell the heparin flush given in my port pre and post herceptin. -
I know this asparagus phenomenon well. As does dh , both lovers of grilled asparagus yet we have not encountered any others who notice " asparagus scent."
I am a smeller as well, the port flush is not my favourite part, to say the least.
I wonder if this is all connected? It sounds more reassuring than "the cancer is still there".

I have a very acute sense of smell and during AC my smell ability was overwhelming. It did make me sick at times, smelling food smells and breath smells and I nearly threw up when another patient brought in a breakfast sandwich into the chemo room...but I never smelled bad, and no one else ever complained, nor did I smell anything on my clothes, and I haven't read anything about this in the many pieces of breast cancer literature I've read.

It is weird, I never had this before, not while doing 75 mins of yoga or biking for hours . I never bothered with deodorants either. This is all since AC. The day it was the worst was after a massage and again, only one underarm. I thought it very strange. Sentinal node removal? AC?
Reading the posts above it seems there are others and a few described the EXACT odor I experience. DH says I am crazy and only once did he agree with me but thought I was exaggerating. Seems this is another INDIVIDUAL SE.
-
I did TCH X6 and I smelled it too...not bad, just different. DH did not notice anything but I could smell it on my pillow and in my clothes. My sense of smell was heightened too and plug-ins made me nauseous too. I am 5 months PFC now and on Tamoxifen. I sweat like a pig during hot flashes but it's a weird kind of sweat....like all water, no stink! Thank goodness cuz I'd be impossible to be around. I couldn't smell or taste the drugs during chemo but I can taste and smell the Heparin used to flush my port too. It's kind of nauseating and I have to look away while they are doing it.
-
My new body smell drives me crazy. My sense if smell has always been strong but it has been heightened & a lot of smells bother me more now. I have been trying to find a natural deodorant with a scent because I really need something to cover up my scent. Nobody smells it as badly as I do but the other day I hugged my 21 yr old son & nice kid that he is told me my pits stunk! It was late in the day & I had been sweating a lot so I did have a scent about me.

HI: Did any of you lose your sense of smell (almost totally) after treatment?? I sure did, and it was extremely high before. I don't know if it's the chemo. the radiation or the aromatase which I'm taking. It is and sounds trivial, when you look at the Big Picture and what we have been through.
Sometimes little things makes us "feel better"; never wear my favorite perfumes any more

Hi Trudy and all
No, I have not lost my sense of smell.. BUT... I did lose that bad smell Yay!!!
Now I know for sure something in treatment brought it on. I am 10 day post final AC , took a long hot walk, had a chemopause sweat and nada..nothing..no smell at all. Sometimes knowing we are not alone or crazy when we experience the weird SE's brings such peace, and relief.
I love this forum, it is great to share!

I definitely noticed a smell coming from my pores for about five days to a week after each T/C treatment. My family said they didn't, but I know that I did. It washed off in the shower, but came back later in the day.
