I just started juicing today. I had a glass of juice made with apples, carrots, strawberries, pineapples and tons of spinach. Doesn't look good I know and my kids actually made a yucky face when I had them taste it, but it was actually very yummy.

Anyway, does anyone have experience juicing? I'd love some tips since I'm so new at this. Thanks a bunch of carrots!!! LOL.

What kind of juicer are you using and is it hard to clean?

I juice twice a day!! I have the Omega juicer...heard that it masticates, and therefore keeps the enzymes. Who knows.

Most everything I juice tastes like crap, so I slam it. Sorry to be so blunt. I always add kale, wheat grass, then tons of other greens. I take it easy on the fruit...too much sugar. I always add an apple, and sometimes cucumber --that pretty much kills the bitterness of anything. I have my kids used to it now too. They groan a bit, but know its all about taking control of their health...making healthy choices.

geewhiz- where do you get wheat grass and do you need a special juicer for it??

I am a recent fan of juicing.  I basically fill an entire collander with veggies, add half an apple and it tastes good.  I try to go light on the fruit/carrots as well because of the sugar.  I would much rather enjoy a bowl of fruit for dessert anyway!

I juice and do wheat grass. On days that I can't I drink my greens in a drink.  For wheat grass you do need a special juicer-they are $99.00 online.

I do 3 carotts, celery, spinach, and then a lemon. Lemons are very good alkalizing your system so that is why I use the lemon.   I try to only have 1 serving of fruit per day b-c of all the sugar in fruit. I amke a huge juice 16 ounces but I am trying to work up to 2 juices a day and 2 wheat grass shots per day to stay alkaline.

I know there is always so much talk about sugar, and I do really limit the refined sugar stuff in my diet, but there are said to be a lot of cancer-fighting properties in natural sugar sources (ie blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, grapes, etc.) so I incorporate a lot of those in my diet.  Am i missing something here??

    Thanks!

This business of wanting your body to be alkaline is confusing to me.  I have never read any randomized, placebo controlled studies about the effectiveness of making our system more alkaline nor have I read any scientific studies about our normal acid/alkaline environment causing health issues.  I would be happy to read any scientific studies that indicate our diets are too acidic or that we need to eat more alkaline foods to balance our pH.

According to the Merk Manual, the biggest control over the acid/base balance is breathing. Here is the link that describes the importance of a balanced pH and the process by which the body keeps this balance.

I think the only randomized controlled trials about lifestyle changes involve the benefits of aerobic exercise and a low fat diet yet there is so much other info circulating about various complimentary therapies.  I don't know where this alkaline notion comes from either.  It doesn't even really make sense based on what is considered  the physiologic pH for the body.  I, too, would love to read a study on this if it exists.

(Not meaning to be critical at all, just interested)

I use the Omega Juicer...handles the wheat grass with no problem. I LOVE fruit, and am well aware of its anti-cancer properties...so I don't "waste" it in a green juice drink. That's just my preference. I LOVE the taste of blueberries, raspberries etc...so I EAT them...on cereals, salsas, plain etc. Fruit is now one of those things to be relished and immensely enjoyed. (OK, it USED to be a cinnabon!!!!)

I think many of us read everything we can when we are diagnosed and stumble along and eventually find a path that works for us. I have enough studies printed to sink a battleship!!  Pure and I both are moms with young kids...I think we both feel that we need to do everything in our power to be here for our kids. I got blasted on another forum for mentioning something that my dear friend who is a scientist in Germany studying cancer sees great promise with in studies...and my naturopath and my onc are always deliciously curious!!  (Haven't been back over there...grouchy forum to remain nameles!!)   I am now a firm believer in whatever you truly believe to work for you, just might be your cure.

Juicing is something I will stick with forever...I believe in it that much. And now, my kids join me as well so hopefully I am working on a healthier generation : )

    geewhiz,

I am with you as a mom of a one year old and four year old I would happily do ANYTHING including eating sawdust for the rest of my life to be with my kids.  I also appreciate evidence-based approaches to medicine and that is tough with the lifestyle modifications because they don't usually exist.  If there is even a chance any of this wil help I am all for it as long as it doesn't interefer with my chemo or cause harm.  I am just really interested in the sugar topic and have seen many references to people avoiding fruit.  I am just trying to figure out if there is something I am missing. (Plus fruit is now my "dessert" of choice!!)  hee hee.

    Thanks!

BTW, I have the Sharper Image juicer.  I wonder if would handle the wheat grass?  Where do you buy it?  Whole foods type place?  Also can you mix it with your other juices?  I don't know why not but it seems everyone is drinking straight.  Just curious.  Thanks!!

Thanks Gee Whiz:) I appreciate your comments.  I am not sure how mentioning I try to stay alkaline got turned into an argument:) lol I wasn't preaching just mentioning what I do.

I am interested in being Alkaline because of what I have read in crazysexycancer, Dr Youngs work, mostly because to be alkaline you have to be eating lots of greens, lots of water, and some protein. No different than what is told of us by our doctors etc. With that said I went to a neropath abouts some acne I had and some severe hormonal issues I had (prior to bc)-she said I had too much acid in my system and needed to get my system more alkaline. I did so and felt fantastic and my issues went away so FOR ME it worked and that was all I needed.

As far as fruit well first my onlogist was the first one to tell me to stick to one serving per day then another girl on here who was stage 3 and went to stage 4 was told to only have blueberries as a treat once in a while. She goes to cancer center of America.

I basically eat a lot of raw vegetables, I juice, I do wheat grass, I work out, I drink a  gallon of water with lemons in it,  and I have King Samon 2times a week. I do meat but usually only once a week. I never have chicken.

I am sharing because possibly someone will find it helpful. I think each person needs to do what works for them.  This works for me.

Also, with wheat grass I was told (by the guy at whole foods:) that you shouldn't mix wheat grass in your juice-it's best to have it as a shot and under the tongue. (totally gross)

I have a wheat juice grinder and it cost me $99.00

Also, during me chemo my numbers never went out of the normal range and I felt great. I had no se's to chemo and nothing with rads either.  I really feel eating this way helped me withstand the treatment so well. I feel better then I ever have.!!

    Pure.

I was not at all trying to start an argument, just trying to learn.  The problem with e-mail/internet is that it is difficult to read *tone* so I apologize if that is how it came across to you.  I, like you, am just trying to figure out the best way to stay as healthy for as long as possible to be here for my kids.  I also have managed to continue to work, raise my kids, and be active through chemo and surgery and am hoping ti continues through rads and more chemo!  I do attribute a lot of that to healthy diet, regular exercise, etc.  (Although I was doing all that before breast cancer too, go figure!!)

Sorry again if I offended you.  That was not my intention.

    Take care,

    Lori

Wow - didn't know about needing to take wheat grass alone -yuck. The Omega juicer does handle it though. It also lets you run water through it so its an easier clean up.

Kris Carr in Crazy Sexy Cancer has a basic juice recipe that tastes pretty good. I think it adds a cucumber ...that helps a lot. She has a great website...just google for it. I just throw in whatever I have in the vegetable drawer.

    Pure - why King Salmon...the Omega 3's?

Lori..you are funny about the sawdust. I visit a naturopath who has me on chinese herbs that literally look like sawdust. Last week he gave me a te and I told him it looked like mulch.

I don't know much about the alkaline thing...I do know that Andrew Weil also writes a lot about it if you are interested in reading more/

    geewhiz,

I just googled "Andre Weil balanced pH" and this is from his web site.

    http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/QAA98873/Does-Alkaline-Water-Promote-Health.html

Of course his website sells his vitamin called Weil Juvenon.

I wish there were more randomized placebo controlled studies on nutrition.

I was actually going to come on here and post this topic today - well almost:)  I was actually going to get all infomercial about my Vita-Mix machine.  I bought the Jack LaLanne juicer and really did like it, but was a little unhappy about all the excess pulp and all those vitamins, fiber, etc. you're not getting with juicing.  So, I borrowed this Vita-Mix blender from my grandparents - and man oh man, I am addicted!!!  I immediately took the juicer back.  I cannot believe how much my energy level has gone up!  So far, I mostly do tomato, celery, carrot, spinach, asparagus and apple - but I've been experimenting with it.  I've also lost weight in just the 5 days that I've had it - because it fills me up.  A little hard to choke down, but I don't even care.  This machine is super expensive (like $550) but it is SO worth it.  No waste, purees everything smoothie fine.  LOVE IT LOVE IT  I'm starting to make my little girl drinks with it too that she likes - like apple carrot with a little yogurt:)  and when he gets big enough I'll make my boy's baby food in it

Also, I was wondering what anyone's thoughts are on the fact that they have you drink a sugar drink before you get scanned to see where the cancer is because it will light up in those areas.  Doesn't that mean that cancer feeds on sugar?  I know when I got pregnant with my first I had a voracious appetite for sugar and didn't before - then it never went away once I had her - I thought because of nursing.  What made me think of this is that my dad and aunt have really low blood pressure - and they love salt.  Both of their spouses have high blood pressure and are not too big on salt.  Sometimes your body craves stuff it is missing, right?  So if you have cancer, would your body crave sugar in the same way?  I'm not saying just because I observed 5 people, that this is the way it is - but just wondering if anyone else thinks there's anything to that.
