    Dear Mountains1day,

May I ask what type of testing you had when you were on BHRT? My daughter is now discovering that the blood testing for hormones are not reliable. It is the saliva testing which is proven to give the correct readings. There is so much to learn, and I am very sad to hear that you were dx even though you were doing everything you could to prevent this.

My daughter went through the slash (mastectomy),  poison (chemo) and burn (rads) after dx, and now she is hell bent on avoiding a recurrence/mets. She has done her homework, and knows this is what she needs to do for herself. After all the hell that she went through, she had a multitude of problems, and was determined not to live this way...even though all the oncs/doctors said...this is life after treatments.

Hi Nan, could you share your sources supporting the accuracy/reliability of saliva hormone testing? I can't seem to find much that isn't provided by very biased sources, such as Dr. Lee and others who sell the testing kits and the "remedies."

Although necessarily an authoritative source, Wikipedia has a lot of information on BHRT and hormone testing, and includes references and citations to back up its information, so it can be a great place to start research.  Unlike a lot of other sources that are very biased one way or another (pro-BHRT or anti-BHRT), Wikipedia often has more balanced information and can be edited to stay up-to date.  Of course it can also include misinformation, but I appreciate the sources linked right in the article for further research.

    Nan,

I went through the blood hormonal panels, did not do saliva.  There was controversy about saliva testing not being more reliable at the time.  I agree, there is so much to learn and can be so confusing when there's much evidence pointing to the pros and to cons of using BHRT.  Unfortunately, even when we do all the right things, cancer can still rear it's ugly head.

I'm sorry your daughter has to go through all of this and I'm glad to hear she is doing her homework and stays proactive.  I am lucky to have an oncologist who is also knowledgeable about bioidenticals and she does not recommend them for me because of my situation but seems to be open to them in combination with scientific research.

Like your daughter, I had the slash (lumpectomy), poison (chemo) and burn (rads).  It was the poison (chemo) that I agonized over the most. Because my tumor pathology indicated I could greatly benefit by the drug Herceptin and studies showed chemo worked synergistic with it,  I agreed to do it.

So I continue to do everything I can to prevent a recurrence as well by combining holistic measures along with medicine.

    Hi Mountains1day,

I also did the infamous "slash, burn, and poison."  I'm always a bit confuzzled about why people use that term as if it's a *bad* thing!  I was more than willing to slash, burn and poison that damn thing that had invaded my body and tried to kill me.  What's the alternative - to treat it with kindness and invite it to stay?

There are so many things that can lead to BC.  I was put on birth control because of heavy, several week long periods when I was only 14, long before they made the low dose BC Pills.  It is no coincidence that I got BC from BC.  Taking these pills at such a young age increased my chances of getting BC by 5 times!  Five years before my diagnosis I tried using the progesterone cream but it seemed to not really help--now I know my dose wasn't right.   Then, one year before I was diagnosed, a friend referred me to a so called bioidentical dr who told me she was giving me bioidenticals but she actually gave me HRT!  One year later I had BC.  Add my low Vit D3 levels, incredibly high stress, an inability to say no, a car accident with an injury to my breast, an abusive boss--I am the classic example of how one gets BC!  Five months prior to my diagnosis I was referred to Dr. Galitzer who, in my part of town, is known as "the miracle dr."  I was told that he was the person to go to when nothing else was working.  I was diagnosed with adrenal exhaustion and he started me on bioidenticals and herbal and homeopathic remedies.  Four months later he couldn't figure out why I wasn't having the same response as his other patients, so he ordered a panel of blood tests (I think he thought I was cheating with all of the things he told me not to do anymore) and the tests came back showing me to be incredibly healthy!   He sent me to have an ultrasound on my thyroid but I only showed growths on my thyroid, no cancer.  It wasn't until I found a small lump that we discovered that I had BC.

Unfortunately, I had to have chemo in order to shrink the cancer small enough (it was in a really bad place and too big) so that I could have surgery to get the remaining cancer out of my body.   If I had gone to Dr. Galitzer sooner I don't think that I would have BC.

The good news:  I am cancer free, there was no lymph node involvement, I was able to have immediate/delayed reconstruction and I have done extremely well during all of my treatments because of the supplements and alternative treatments I am doing.  I am a fighter and I intend to live a long, long time thanks to doctors like Galitzer and my own constant research into what works and what doesn't.  BTW I am not rich, I do not have insurance and Dr. Galitzer is not extremely expensive.  I have wiped out my savings going to him but it has and continues to be worth every penny I have spent.

In the end, it is always about the QUALITY of life, much more than the quantity.  Quantity is nice; but for me, quality rules.

I am considering Bioidenticals, my only concern is the information out there that under obama care the compounding pharmacy will be no more.  Are you worried about what to do if that occurrs.  I agree with the balance of hormones is the key, without the compounding pharmacies we will not have that

    MBJ,

I am a little confused. You say you had no lymph node involvement, but your signature says "stage IIb" and "1/2 nodes".

Has anyone heard of Dzugan Method? They just opened here in Ohio. They compound bioidenticals in Florida and send them here. I would love to use them but the cost is unbelievable.
