My radiation will be completed 2 days before a planned and paid for cruise to the Bahamas.  I am so disappointed in the timing of all of this.  I spoke to my surgeon before my 2nd lumpectomy and told her about the vacation plans and there was no mention of how this process may interfere.  Now I'm scheduled to hit the beaches COVERED UP!  Really, really?

Does anyone know what the risk is in delaying radiation rather than beginning 3-6 weeks after surgery?

I don't know what the risk is, and I don't know to what degree it varies with each woman's pathology/presentation.  What I do know is that I started 10+ weeks after surgery and my rad onc was fine with it.

How much delaying radiation matters depends on how aggressive your tumor is.  If you have DCIS low-moderate grade, a delay will not matter.  If you have invasive cancer high grade, delay is bad.  Other factors besides stage and grade may matter.

Also, it is really nice to have a vacation after rads is over.  My husband insisted that we take one then and it was very relaxing. You will not feel terrible but you will also not feel ambitious right after the end of rads.

Not sure about delaying rads, Im sure your Onc can let you know. I went on vacation to mexico 10 days after my rads and didnt have a problem. Just used an 80spf on my radiated side and a 30 on the rest. Also wore a pretty sunhat to protect my colarbone. Can they move your rads sooner rather than later?? Just a thought. Hope it works out for you, a vacation is an incredible boost for the moral! Hugs Suz

I delayed my rads a bit, I had a rash fever thing going on and demanded a break. No one was supportive of that, drs insisted I start rads asap. but I did postpone it a few weeks (my friends said good 4u!). Even with teh chemo you have to be careful in teh sun. www.coolibar.com has SPF clothing. I got a beach shirt, light weight and it breathes. They say for about a year, cover up from sun. Did you have lymph nodes removed?  If yes and IF YOU ARE FLYING ask about a "slleve" for your arm. It can make the difference of whether or not you start a lymphedema battle.  ENJOY!!! your trip.  hugs terri
