February 2010 Mastectomy
Comments
-
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in '08..had a lumpectomy with 3 nodes removed..all clean. Had chemo and rads..finished rads in August of '09. Had a clear mammogram in October '09... and in January '10 found another lump. I had a mastectomy, right side only with 9 nodes removed..all clean.. on Feb 10th. I have been healing good.. still a lot of fatigue but no lympedema as of yet(fingers crossed).
My problem is the seroma at the incision site. Last Tues I had to have it drained and they took out over 1,000 cc's of fluid. I kept my sports bra on with light compression(which I had been wearing for 2 weeks prior to the drain) and still..the fluid has built back up again. I have been working with my OT for manipulation and certain arm exercises but I have to go tomorrow to get the seroma drained once again.
I haven't seen anything on the forums about this and am wondering if anyone else has experienced built up lymph fluid like this. Any idea how long I can expect to keep having this fluid build up? It's not painful just uncomfortable against my chest port and under the arm.
Thanks for any advice, input or comments.
Best of luck to all of you ladies for whatever you are going through at the moment!!

good morning everyone,
I had my first Chemo yesterday and all went well. I took Emend before I left the house and put lidocaine over my port. Saw the Dr., had blood drwn and then into the chair. They hooked my to a stereoid, and Aloxi (sp?) and then pushed the Adriamycin and started the cytocin. Then I had either the trial drug or placebo in a drip. (trial drug) Only complaint was a slight headache. Brought some smacks and drinks and did some work with my husband. I took a decadron at home. Before bed took 2 stool softeners, thanks to you ladies. Slept pretty well, woke at 3:00 am but fell back to sleep. Then up at 6:00 for the kids. Felt a little queasy, took Emend and decadron. Going into the office for a half day. My husband will give me the Nuelasta shot this afternoon. I also have compazine and ativan in case i need them. Nurse said probably not until day 4 when no longer on Emend and decadron.
Faith, I do not think I ever answered your question about finding someone to treat cording. We have been using Caring Bridge website to keep everyone informed and my husband put it on there that we needed a PT that specializes in lymphodema and cording. It ws great how many people knew someone. If you can find a lymphodema spec. they probably know about cording. Look on some of the lymphodema certification schools, they usually list specialists in your area. Then we just called a round and asked questions. As I said, I had 3 cords, one already broke. So 2 to go. Just doing my exercises have helped my ROM.
Just as an FYI she said they can come back esp with rads which I have to have.
Hope everyone feels good today. Good luck ato anyone starting Chemo. So far so good.

Hi, Belinda! I had one Seroma which was only like 44cc...I cant imagine 1000cc! Mine looked like a half baseball. My ps said it's unlikely to reoccur, but for you it sure did! I wish I could offer advice. Maybe someone else had another experience that will help.
I do hope you feel better!

snappygoddess, I have had a seroma after lymph node dissection on my left side on 3/11. They tried to drain it, but, even using ultrasound, I'm not sure they found the right spot. They didn't draw much fluid, and it didn't seem to make any difference to me. Your 1000cc draw sounds like a lot. Sometimes it's quite uncomfortable, and I feel like I can't lower my arm completely. It doesn't help that the underside of my arm is still hypersensitive to touch, so having that against the seroma bump isn't great. When I saw the onco last week, she noted that the fluid was still there but wasn't sure if they'd want to try to drain it again or just let it reabsorb. I'll be starting chemo in about three weeks, but she said the seroma wouldn't cause a delay. I did ask if there was anything I should do or not do to either make it go away or keep it from coming back, and both the onco and the radiologist who did the draining said there wasn't.
Kayne, I'm glad to hear that your first chemo went well.

Good Morning Ladies,
Hope everyone is doing well. It is beautiful here today, sunny and reaching 75 degrees. I will go for my first walk today since Chemo. Couldn't quite do it before. Stomach felt like it was bouncing and had an awful headache. Seem to be better today.
On a funny note, Tuesday was day 3 of horrible rain. I went to the office to work a 1/2 day. I had 2 bags to bring in so carried one in and went out for the other (my computer). Parked as close as I could to the door, but was next to the curb. Rain, wind, doing the best I could caring my computer and umbrella my ankle twisted and down I go. Fell on my left side, which was good, got up all is fine. Scrapped my knee but all is ok. Go the PT the next day for my cording and it's gone!! She thinks when I fell I must have released it. So hopefully I will go one more time and that's it. YEA! I'm sure you can relate, too many appts.
Wishing you all a blessed Easter and a peaceful weekend with minimum aches, pains and SE.
-
Kayne -- that is a heck of a way to release cords -- but hey, whatever works! Hope everyone is doing well and has a nice Easter weekend!
-
Kayne,I am just glad you did not hurt yourself and something actually good came of the fall, seems like a fall and something good as a result is an oxymoron.Happy Easter everyone!!!

Belinda, I've had a lot of seroma trouble, and it's no fun. I had a tumor removed from under my right arm in August '09, and a left sentinal node biopsy in September. Seromas formed at both sites. On the right, I'd had a JP drain for about a week after the surgery, but fluid was draining out around it instead of into it. Once the drain was removed, the fluid kept building and becoming tight and uncomfortable. I had it drained twice a week for two months, about 150-200 cc's each time, before and just after starting chemotherapy. The left side seroma behaved differently - it didn't build enough fluid to become uncomfortable, and stayed sort of soft. The surgeon tried draining it a couple of times, but the fluid would just come back in the same quantity each time, so we decided to leave that side alone while I was in chemo.
Had a second JP drain put in on the right in October, and for the remainder of my chemo treatments either had a drain or an opening that dripped continually, so I was pretty miserable. Toward the end of the chemo I developed an abcess and took antibiotics.
When I had the mastectomy, the surgeon removed some abcessed and necrotic tissue. I had the left side drain for two weeks and the right for five. The left side seroma is completely gone now, and I'm hopeful that the right is resolving. It's been closed up for a couple of days. It's been holding up my radiation schedule.
I was told that heat makes the fluid build, so try to avoid hot showers or baths - use cooler water or take a sponge bath, and no heating pads or warm compresses. Supposedly exercise also contributes to the fluid buildup.
I tried using compression, but it never helped for me.
Don't know why some of us are seroma-prone - just special, I guess! -

All I need to know I learned from the Easter Bunny! Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Everyone needs a friend who is all ears. There's no such thing as too much candy. All work and no play can make you a basket case. A cute tail attracts a lot of attention. Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day. Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits. Somebody parts should be floppy. Keep your paws off of other people's jelly beans. Good things come in small, sugar coated packages. The grass is always greener in someone else's basket. To show your true colors, you have to come out of the shell. The best things in life are still sweet and gooey. May the joy of the season fill your heart. AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU! Happy Easter!!
Love Ya Pink Pals ! xoxx Gina

MNLinda... I'm so sorry for all that you have been going through...since my first post, I have been back twice to get it drained once again. My BS wanted to put a drain back in but I said no go...I work with special needs kids and that drain would be yanked on or out...I cannot afford to not work, since I have already been out 7 wks(unpaid) and school will be out in another 35 days.
It doesn't hurt at all.. it just gets tight and uncomfortable against my port and my underarm. Mine is also still sensitive so I do understand what you mean. Since having my seroma drained 3x's the last 2 weeks.. they have drawn off a total of 2,085 cc's of fluid!! It's more annoying then anything...having to mess up my schedule going back and forth to the doctors to get it drained.
If it were under 40cc's.. they usually will wait and let the body re-absorb it rather then drain it. I have been on an antibiotic to prevent infection but we all know there is always a chance of infection with any surgical site.
I feel for you Linda...having treatments at the same time as this seroma stuff.....I pray that it all passes quickly and you will be back on your feet and full of life again soon!! HUGS
Thanks for all of the comments about the seroma..I appreciate the input!!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Easter and enjoy the time spent with family!

Hey all, it's 2 months post surgery for me and doing well. Healed up maybe 95% with just a small but annoying pocket of fluid at the end of mast incision under L arm. I see others have similar issues. Guess I'm in the *reabsorb group. Seem to be tolerating chemo OK, so far so good, 2 tx's down and 4 to go.
Been busy at work, a project just ended and a lot of bills have been coming in to verify (I work in accounts payable). So I'm putting in some extra hours to build up flex credit for when I need it after tx #3. Plus it's been beautiful here the past week and I've been enjoying it while it lasted.
Yesterday, I drove a 15-passenger van to work. I'm in a van pool and am a back-up driver for when the main driver needs the day off, such as yesterday.
Now, these people have not seen me for a couple of months because of surgery and chemo. I've been driving myself and/or telecommuting since the end of Jan. But am healed enough to handle the van (good thing, too, it was real windy and we drove home in a rain storm) and I'm at a place in tx's where I felt well enough to drive other people approx 100 mi RT.
The last time they saw me, I had a long gray braid. Yesterday I had the punk grandma look with half-inch spikes of thinning white hair. I got into the driver's seat and said good morning to six or seven people. You cut your hair, someone said. Yes I did, I replied. And said no more... 'nuf said I thought, started the van and away we went.
I am going to work without camouflage. No wig, no hat, no scarf, no make-up, no-thing. If I go bald, so be it, this too shall pass, right? Should have some hair again by Labor Day if I'm lucky. An interesting social side effect is that I seem to be more approachable. I find strangers more free to chat me up, maybe now I look less threatening or more like their mothers & grandmothers lol?
Best wishes and blessings this weekend my sisters. Hope you're feeling well and able to enjoy the weekend! {{hugs}}
p.s. did we ever settle on an alternate chocolate cake day? I'm still game for Monday! :-)

Hi everybody! Tomorrow will be 2 months out from surgery for me. That is hard to believe. I am doing pretty well although still tight. More of a problem for me right now is my back issue. My doctor thinks it is probably a bulging disc. Taking ibuprofen and he is sending me to physical therapy three days a week. Haven't started yet. My surgeon is also sending me to PT for range of motion issues with arm and shoulder from mx surgery, so I guess I'll do both types of PT at the same time. I had x-rays of back last week and it showed bone spurs and one vertebrae out of line. I'm trying to take it easy and hopefully keep this stupid disc from rupturing. That happened to me 10 years ago and it is EXTREMELY painful.
Happy Easter to all of you. I loved the "things I learned from the Easter Bunny", Gina! Thanks for posting it. I hope all of you are healing and doing well, especially those of you now doing chemo. Please pop in occasionally and let us know how you are doing.
Faith
groundhog --- I'm good with chocolate cake on Monday, too!

Good morning, February ladies. Just a short note to wish everyone a Happy Easter!!!
Faith, Groundhog - I can't believe it has been 2 months already. I will get a chocolate cake today and will have some tomorrow. If it's another day, oh well, just another excuse to eat cake again.
I have a lot of reading to catch up on, so I will write more later. I was able to visit home last weekend since my doppler ultrasound came back negative. My doctors think it is muscular; and my legs have been feeling better. Praying those who are in pain will get relief soon.
Take care and I hope where ever you are, the weather is as nice as it is here.

Hello Feb women, I haven't posted here for a while -been mainly posting in the March chemo area but check in here often to see how everyone's faring. It's now 5 and half weeks since surgery, and I'm having a little trouble with my wound. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I had a tissue sparing mastectomy with tissue expander. My wound has been having a little problem with completely healing - the PS has had to do 2 "trims" of extra tissue, including one more today. It's not infected, he thinks it's because the flap has not got 100% blood supply to this small area, and I've started the chemo.
Fingers crossed the trim today (with re-suturing) is the last of the problem. It's put my fills back, so I'm at about 250ml, but that's ok by me. Plenty of time for the reconstructive side of things.
Hope everyone else is having a smooth time of the healing sie of things.

Hello all, just popping in to say hi at 2 months 7 days post-surgery and am happy to report that pretty much since week 5 1/2 I have been completely (and I do mean competely!
) free of all surgical discomfort... even my port doesn't bother me anymore! So there is indeed a big light (and no, it isn't a white one, LOL!) at the end of the surgery tunnel.
I've now moved onto the Chemo Train of course. I first started posting on the March 2010 thread but after seeing all the other gals there going through various stages of Chemo Hell so much worse than what I'm experiencing (because I am on a much "easier" chemo regimen than the vast majority of people with my same kind of cancer) I started feeling really guilty, like I was some kind of "Glamour Gal With No Problems" compared to everyone else, and so pretty much stopped posting there!
Instead I started a new thread asking for people who have had or are having my particular protocol, which is the "Weekly Taxol + Herceptin: Anyone?" thread on the Chemo board in case anyone wants to check out my life with chemo. ;-)
Best wishes to everyone and especially to my TrekSister groundhog and my GardeningSister hereandnow!

Good morning sisters, I'm up a bit early so am having a cup of coffee and getting caught up. I too feel blessed to have side effects that so far *touch wood* seem mild and few compared to others, maybe my pennance is to go "commando." Hair is baby fine now and mostly scalp and I have newfound sympathy for guys who do comb-overs! There's a little left, in a close-cropped white monk's fringe or like Captain Picard LOL!! That will help me get through the next six months! I haven't actually shaved my head and don't think I will, rather let it come out naturally since it doesn't hurt at this time. Just looks like h*ll but hey, this is what chemo does and this is how I look and will for a while, and I guess I'm going to let other people see it too. But I will be soooo glad when it starts coming back in... oops gotta go get ready for work! {{hugs}}

Good evening ladies, been spending time getting caught up with all of you after my 10 days in Florida. You have all been so busy and so much has happened. I had decided that I was not going to log into this site or any other cancer site during vacation. I was going to pretend as much as possible that I didn't have cancer, that it was like last year. It was kind of nice!
Everything went pretty good while I was gone, I found out I was anemic before I left so they put me on iron pills and a multi vitamin. I went to the health food store in my town and bought them there because I had read somewhere that vitamens absorb better that were from health food stores. They made such a world of difference with me, every day I started feeling better and stronger and I didn't have any side affect with fiber pills which is a plus since I already have those issue with pain meds. I am still having the issue with my stomach scar opening up. My doctors had told me to spend as much time possible in the salt water and I did that, but it seemed that after every time I was in the salt water, a new area of my scar started to swell and then within 24 to 48 hours would open up and expel fluid. These area's are all still open and draining. The original two have gotten better in the salt water but I now have an additional 5 or 6 other small areas of my scar that has opened up. I go to see my plastic surgeon tomorrow so I will see what he says. I can't start Chemo until this heals.
I can't believe that tomorrow will be 7 weeks from my Mastectomy, time is really flying! I hope everyone else is feeling good and had a wonderful Easter.

Hi Feb Group,
I haven't posted since my bilateral mastectomy and tissue expanders and sentinel node biopsy for what was supposed to be a preventative surgery since I had high grade DCIS in my right breast. My pathology report revealed otherwise. I had invasive ductal carcinoma 1.1cm and 1 positive lymph node in my right breast and invasive lobular carcinoma 6cm in my left breast. Need to do chemo and rads. On top of this shocking news I had to have my left expander removed due to a hematoma and staph infection on March 29. PS doesn't want to risk another expander in left breast and suggested a muscle transfer since I don't have enough tissue for a DIEP. Needless to say, I am very depressed about the diagnosis and now I'm not sure I want another reconstruction disaster. I hope to start chemo now waiting for infection to clear. I will be doing Taxol, Carboplatin and Herceptin which is very strong. So much for doing preventative surgery. Ultrasounds, Mammogram and MRI did not reveal either cancer since my breasts were too dense. Pretty scary!!!
-
Hi star-light: I also have ILC which didn't show up in my mammogram but luckily a lump was felt. It turned out to be a cyst that was next to a cancerous area. I had a bilateral on 2/23 since there were areas of concern on my right side that showed up in an MRI (the known cancer was in the left). The right turned out to be DCIS, while the left had ILC and LCIS. What an alphabet soup. So you've got work ahead of you. If you start chemo this month, come join our April 2010 chemo start group.

Hello everyone!
7 weeks out and so I figured it was time to make my appt for a prostesis form. Spent the day at Nordstom's getting fitted for one and decided to add a second for swimming since we're going to be in Costa Rica for a month this summer. Didn't really take a good look at the swimming boob until I got home -- can anyone tell me why the boob made for swimming isn't filled in completely but a bit hollow. How is that supposed to work? I decided to treat myself completely -- got a personal stylist who helped me find bathing suits and summer outfits and get the proper alterations. It was like playing Barbie but I WAS Barbie!!! LOL I don't think I laughed or had so much fun in a long time and I don't even LIKE shopping (even when I had both boobs!)
Anyway, does anyone know why the swimming form is the way it is??

Hi all Feb girls,
Regina, Thanks so much for sharing the pink glove dance, very nice.
I have been busy, trying to stay away from hospitals........ I got an infection in my TE from a tooth that had a root canal last year.
. I was back to the hosp for 6 days, then at home infusion for 10 more. now this is my 3rd week of oral antibiotics. I am really fighting to save this girl...
I am now going to call them " Poobies" because they are so PAINFUL.
I've relly lost touch, but also want to say thanks for the video "I have cancer, but cancer does not have me" I typed that and sent it to some of my local cancer friends.
I am praying for ALL People Living with Cancer. A couple of my friends made me a pink T shirt that says" Yes They're Fake! My real ones tried to kill Me! it also has a pink breast cancer tie on it . I will wear it to our local Relay For Life, this weekend.
Prayers, Hugs and Wishes for Pain Free Days . We are strong, cause God won't give us more than we can handle.
Can you all believe, that it's almost May!!!!!! It seems as though I have been in a dream for the last couple months. but then I feel my right TE and wake right up
HAPPY DAYS,
TAMMY

When I wake up in the morning I usually try to pull my pajama top down, becuase it feels like it's gotten twisted up underneath my armpits. Then I realize that it's not the pajama top that's giving me that feeling. Does it ever loosen up?
-
MNLinda - that made me laugh. Sorry, but it was funny. Because the same thing happens to me. I am 10 days ahead of you, and no, it hasn't loosened up yet. Thank god I'm not the only one that it happens to!
-
I did not have much under arm pain in the beginning but recently it has increased, the description of your pajama top is exactly how I feel too - I guess it surprised me because I did not have it before.

I worked all weekend, so I am off today & waiting for my Oncocgist office to call me back with Lab results & results from the dexan-scan I had friday!
Hope you enjoy the song, it inspired me today, Iam in a boo-hoo modd, but it raining here, so that doesn't help!
Love Gina

I'm at 2 months and can relate to the "tight, twisted feeling". I guess I was thinking this was just part of the "deal" -- not painful just a bit annoying. I Imagine, in time, I won't notice any longer.
