    Hi, Betty,

Have you tried these two listing sites?

http://www.mylymphedema.com  Click on the Therapist Locator and then follow all the links to find well-trained therapists near you. (Two of them ask for your email and zip code, and they email you a list of nearby therapists).

http://www.clt-lana.org  On the left-hand side, click on "LANA certified therapists"

Hope you find one you can really "click" with!

    (((Hugs!)))

    Hi Binney,

Should I search from Kloss or Norton, is one better than the other or the same?

Also, I am not sure the difference of PTA, CLT, MT, HHP? or do I need one CLT-LANA?

    Thanks!

    Betty

    Hi!

Search them all, Betty. The training of the therapists on all four of the sites listed on the Therapist Locator will be essentially the same. (Now, I have to clarify that: each school feels it's the best. If lymphedema therapist schools had football teams they could battle it out on the gridiron, but since they don't they get into bragging about tiny differences of hand positions for massage and such. Frankly, it'd be better for us patients if they all had football teams.Wink)

None of the abbreviations you listed should make much difference. What you want is someone who will do daily therapy for you, massaging, bandaging, teaching you how to manage it all, helping you learn about skin care and exercise, and overseeing your care as you need them afterward. It's a long-term relationship, so it needs to be someone you can communicate with and trust. Too bad there aren't letters after their names to show that! Maybe ICAY - I care about you!

Let us know what you discover!

    Gentle (((((hugs!)))))

Thank you, Binney.  I looked the list, most therapist worked for the hospital.  I would like to find someone who work independently, so I can go to her all the time.  If anyone on the board live closeby that know such a therapist who is good with her job would be very helpful to me.  I am trying to get contacts.

    Betty:

I live in Mission Viejo and see Karen Wehner at Dr. Curcio's office.  You can see all of the info at mybreastcarespecialist.com.

    Good luck,

I just saw this post and saw the older date on it, but wanted to add my information for you and others anyway.

Check out massagetherapy.com for their therapist locator link. These people are licensed, qualified massage therapists. Some are in private practice (travel to your home). On the first page type in your zipcode and pick "Lymphatic Massage" or "Lymphatic Drainage Therapy" from the dropdown list box and a list of your local therapists will come up.

    Hi, Julia,

I wonder when you mention these listings are for "licensed, qualified massage therapists" if you mean they have the required 136 hours of specifically lymphedema training (and preferably at least a year's supervised lymphedema experience)? Unfortunately there is no "licensing" for lymphedema therapists, so we do have to ask these questions of any MT, PT or OT before agreeing to treatment by them.

A better bet for assuring that the therapist who treats us has the proper training is to check out the suggestions I noted in my above post, as those are therapists who have completed the requisite hours, at least. Fortunately for all of us there's a new bill in Congress that (among other things) would at least assure us that anyone treating lymphedema has been well trained. Until then, we all need to know what questions to ask before treatment begins.

Here are a couple of other resources for assuring that the lymphedema treatment you receive is the best available:

http://www.lymphnet.org   (See their Position Papers on Training and Treatment)

    Be well!
