Mastectomy Scar

My mother's breast scar from her lumpectomy and re-incision healed nicely. The scar line wasn't very thick and it looked like a tight seam. However, her mastectomy scar is not only larger but it appears like it's going to be much thicker with a not very tight looking seam. This appearance has upset her. Will the stretch from the TE and subsequent implant make this worse ? Are there any procedures or treatments that the PS can utilize to improve or minimize this scar ? She sees her PS at the end of this week and I would like her to have some info on this subject to discuss with him.

    Hi there..

    I wish I knew. I have mastecomy scars and it has been seven months. I think they look a lot better than when I first had it. I have also had two c sections and the scar from that is thick and it has been almost two years. I think they can do scar revision or can advise of some creams etc to loosen up the scar tissue. The PS will know what to do to help. Good luck at the appt.

    The TEs will stretch the scars somewhat.  However, the PS should minimize the scars at the time of the exchange to the implants.  There are also several creams available that will assist in reducing the appearance - my PS recommends Scarguard.

    They use the same scar/incision for the exchange. So just when you kind of start healing, it is opened up again.  My surgeon fixed some  of the scar at the exchange from the nipple sparing that went wrong.  I had a mastectomy last April and exchange in Nov. I'm using silicone sheets and cocoa butter trying to get the scars to fade. I am very fair skinned and heal slowly. I still have a mark on my arm from last year burning myself cooking. I'm hoping by Nov  this year they will be somewhat lighter.

    They can fix the scar when she has her exchange, and the expander will fill it out.

    Tell her not to focus on it right now, she's still a work in progress.
