Unsightly scars

I just had a bilateral 5 weeks ago.  I am doing really well - I have recovered almost full range of motion etc.  This evening I happened to catch the Breast Cancer Diaries documentary by Ann Murray Paige.  I noticed what a smooth, flat chest she has with thin linear cars,

My chest looks terrible:  much more tissue was removed from one side;  the other side looks like the bottom of my breast is still ther, although the surgeon assures me that it is "just skin".  The incisions look puckered and wrinkles, almost like they were gathered with a drawstring.  There are several lumps and bumps and now a little crater is forming under a scab which developped near my sternum due to "a little tissue necrosis."

Is this particularly unusual?  The surgeon says I am healing up nicely and that I can consult a plastic surgeon to "tidy things up" if I am unhappy with my chest.  I should have asked him if he would be proud to display a photograph of my chest to advertise his surgical expertise!  This guy is head of  surgical research in the faculty of medicine in one of our universities...

I would welcome any replies from others who have had similar ghastly results and had plastic surgery to tidy up.  I am not having reconstruction right away, and perhaps never.

I do not have the nice smooth, flat line like I have seen in pics, either. My scar hooks up towards my armpit, there is pleating (like the drawstring thing you spoke off), there are lumps and bumps. I have one spot that took a long time to heal and the skin is pleated around that area.

I am 6 months post mastectomy. I have not made a decision about recon. If I don't recon, I will probably have the scar tidied up a little.

But, it does change over time. If I were you, just wait a little, let all the swelling go down and then see what you have in a few months.

Thanks Melinda.  I was feeling hard done by.  It's bad enough to face this disease a second time, and to lose my breasts, but to be stuck with this mess just seems like adding insult to injury.

Talking to the surgeon about it, he just shrugs his shoulders and gently informs me that it can be fixed if I don't like it.  It makes me wonder if he expects me to develop some sort of affection for this unsightly disfiguration!

I will try to be patient and see what develops.

Everyone who sees my scars is impressed with how neat and straight they are and when I tell them who my BS was they say, "oh yes, she's the best in town"  Certainly mine look better now than they did right after, as I had two big lumps at my sternum and wrinkles and bumps all along the incision (from the several layers of disolvable stitches under the skin) and these little poochy things under my armpits that look like mini-boobs.  Everything else has gotten better but I still have the mini-boobs.  Sometimes they are fuller than other times, depending on the lymphedema, but when I asked my BS about them she kind of acted like yours -  said that I had some muscle and fat there and that if she redid that area it might come out worse.  I do wonder if she left tissue there on purpose because if I choose to get reconstruction later (which I don't plan on) they will need that tissue.  I've read some people say that on other threads.  So I guess I'm stuck with it, even if I'm not planning on needing it later.

Also, I have a slight divot on one side - probably where the cancer was close to the chest wall and she had to take more tissue there.  It's minor.  I think in the end, I will be happy with the shape of things, but right now it all sucks - my chest still hurts and pulls and doesn't feel right even with full ROM and I feel like I have a rolled-up towel under each arm about half the time.  I get really tired of it.  And I REALLY hope it doesn't stay this way forever.

Sometimes I think it depends on the previous breast size and construction as to what things look like after surgery, but the surgeon makes a difference too - some are "artists" and some are less so.  Even though my incision is nice and straight, I'm still not happy with the current state of things.  So that's my whine for the day - hope it makes you feel less alone, even if it doesn't help otherwise.

The condition of your skin, the amount of fatty tissue, the shape of your chest cavity, and the extent of your surgery will affect the outcome. If your chest cavity is deep , the new you may curve inward. My scar on the mastectomy side zig-zagged as I had a tumor at 2:00 & another one at 11:00. The surgeon needed to work around the known tumors rather than cut through them. Try to be patient as it takes a long time for incisions to heal, swelling to disappear, and the redness of the scar to disappear.  I had reconstruction with an implant. Once I had a nipple and areola, my zig zagging scar was not as noticeable.

Why not give things time to heal and then consult with a PS to see what can be done to smooth out your chest.

Your note is really timely. I had a bilateral mastectomy 16 months ago. I'm VERY unhappy with the left side. It sounds exactly like you describe. My right looks pretty smooth. I have the "booblets" under both arms. Tomorrow morning I have surgery to fix the left side and the booblets. My plastic surgeon is supposedly very good. I'm not having reconstruction, I just want to be smooth. I feel like a monster when I look at the bad side.

Hugs to you, good luck, and I'll let you know how mine goes. :)

I'm in the middle of rads just now, and I got puckering and bumps like you described but it looks much worse emphasised in a red square.  I told them i didn't and wouldn't want recon but a neat scar would have been good. i know there's nothing I can do now till rads over and any damage healed, but it's encouraging to know it can be dealt with later.

GryffinSong, all the best for a speedy recovery.

My surgery apparently went well. I'll see under the bandages on friday when the doc checks me out. It sure is a lot easier than the mastectomy!!!

    Hi,

I'm having exchange surgery Tuesday and the PS is suppose to "fix" my leftover ugly blobs of skin that appeared after my BMX.  I currently have "booblets" under my arms, I call then my linebacker rolls so I can relate to the unsightly issues. I'm not looking forward to more surgery, but I will be glad to have them gone. GriffinSong, I'm glad to hear your surgery was easier than the mastectomy.

Today I got most of the bandages off and I look MUCH better!!! My mom is surprised at how far around toward my back the incisions go, but the surgeon and I talked about that and I didn't care. I just wanted him to smooth me out in the best way possible. I scar beautifully, which is to say that they virtually disappear, so I'm not worried about them. I get my stitches out on tuesday morning. Will keep you posted. :)

I told my breast surgeon that I didn't want "booblet" or "dog ears" under my arms before my bilateral mastectomy, and he made sure that I didn't have them.  I had sentinal node biopsies on both sides, and my scars are a little longer than normal, but no booblets! Or as my surgeon said, "no doo-flappies."  After reading on here how many women have them, I have thanked him profusely.

Neck surgery a year ago left an unsightly scar that religious use of dermalmd scar serum everyday now for a year has almost completely disappeared. also had appendix removal 6 months ago and that scar is almost gone as well. don't expect immediate results, you have to use it for a year before you start feeling good about it.

I had wrinkles and puckering on my scars after getting the TEs removed. I view what the Plastic Surgeon left as revenge for me demanding he get those shitty bags out of my chest. (He was a really arrogant dude who wanted me to have big boobs). I asked around and found the best PS available to me and 9 months after the first surgery had 'scar revision' surgery to clean up all the mess the first PS left. I am really flat and have clean thin lines with no puckering. The new PS even removed some divots I had near my armpits where there was adhesion. I'm very happy with my flat scars now.

It sucks to have additional surgery, but I would highly suggest doing it if you are unhappy with your scars. The surgery was minimal and I was back to normal after a day or two.

Valentinazevallos - you pulled up a 7 y/o Thread that had not been posted on in 7 years.
