What a great topic. I've been on Tamoxifen for just over a year and I've gained about 15 pounds. About half of that was weight I had lost on chemo. I have to say that I gained most of that in the first 6 months. I joined Curves last September and have been going faithfully 3 times per week.  While I'm not losing weight, I'm no longer gaining. It seems to keep me from gaining more.  I can't say that I'm really dieting either but I do watch that I don't eat too much.  The belly fat thing is a problem.  The rest of me has toned quite a bit but the belly fat doesn't go anywhere.  It helps me when I remind myself that I'd rather be alive and plump than skinny and dead! It's also true that it is very common to gain weight during menopause so it probably would have been a sturggle at some point anyway!

I am petrified of starting Tamox.  I am 2 1/2 weeks out from BMX and see my onc. next week to talk about Tam.  My BS seems to think its a no brainer but I am really on the fence. For some odd reason losing both breasts was not as terrifying as gaining weight with no control over it.  I have always struggled to remain thin.  LOst 50lbs. on Weight Watchers after third child and other than 10 lbs up and down have kept it off. My dx came just after I started to get that 10 lbs off again for upcoming summer (usually not difficult).  Between dx and surgery I could not lose it so now I am in panic mode.

I have been sedentary since surgery because I am always exhausted.  Energy levels finally creeping up.  Listening to all of you with healthy lifestyles and now weight issues makes me crazy.  I hope it is enough motivation to at least trim down before starting any new med.

Question- how soon after surgery (if you had one) or tx did you begin Tamox?  My path came back negative.  After removing both breasts and getting a good report do you think I have some time to slim down ( few months maybe?) before any hormonal therapy?

Any help or advise will be greatly appreciated!  After BC being the chubby chick is my worst fear!

    HUGS♥

TamGam: I started tamoxifen on Dec. 25th 2009 (merry christmas!), four weeks after my last chemo.

I had gained around 12 pounds during chemo and lost some when I finally started eating normally again. I still have 8-9 pounds to lose. I have recently gone back to the gym and even hired a personal trainer to try and stay active everyday. After 3 weeks of working out like crazy, I still haven't lost anything... it is pretty disheartening. At least I'm trying to stop gaining!

I was diagnosed 4 years ago and have been taking Tamoxifen for about 2 1/2 years. I was 47 at the time of diagnosis. I was fit as a 25 year old, doing yoga, walking , etc.  Two and a half years later after Tamoxifen and induced menopause I look at the mirror and my body looks like the body of a middle aged 50 year old.  I don't hate it, I have come to accepted it to a certain extend.    I still do the treadmill three times a week and try to eat healthy, but I don't seem able to shed the extra 15 pounds. I have refused to go on a strict diet, I guess I love food more than a good bikini body.  I have conclude that if I really want to loose the extra weight I need to exercise minimus 5 days a week and go on a diet. Maybe by the summer. Life has certainly changed after b.c. and to be fair, not all for the bad. Love to all, Marilin

I seem to have plateaued.  I am heavier now post chemo and I just can't seem to lose the stomach roll.  I exercise, don't overeat or drink , to no avail.  Summer has to be better.

Ladies- look at this comment I read on another Tamoxifen thread. The MOMENT I read it, it clicked with me completely that this is what happened to me the first few months on it. Has anyone else felt this way? Of course i DID gain the weight. Wish I had known about this ahead of time.

The oddest thing was that, for the first couple of months, I felt like my satiety signals were missing, that is, I didn't feel full like I normally did prior to tamox. Luckily they seem back to normal again, so I'm not tempted to overeat as I was in the first couple of months. I was super-sensitized to the possibility of gaining weight on tamox so I made sure I didn't eat more (and didn't gain weight), but I was tempted. I wonder if this is true for the women who do gain weight - they're hungrier and/or not feeling sated, and therefore eat a bit more than before. Purely speculation.

AmyIsStrong, another good comment and something to definitely keep in mind.

My husband tells me that for many of us, being thirsty feels the same as being hungry--its just a state of want.  Most of us go for food first when what our body may really need is water. i have tried that during the day and find it is often very true.  If I drink a big glass of water and wait a few minutes, I find I am not really hungry.  Another thing to keep in mind is speed of eatting. I have a VERY bad habit of eatting fast which means I easily eat more than I could because my brain isn't getting the message that I've had enough.

I am keeping all of this in mind when I think I want a snack and trying to make the good habits NOW before I am actually on the tamoxifen.

Hi all, kind of late posting to this topic but....

I started Tamoxifen on May 5. About two weeks before that I started taking Ritalin, prescribed for cancer related fatigue. What I found with the Ritalin is not that it killed my hunger, but did kill my constant cravings for chocolate and sweets and desire to constantly eat. I do mean constant. I read that the Ritalin affects dopamine in our brains. I'm hoping the Ritalin helps to offset the possible weight gain. I won't know for a while, but if it seems to help, I'm going to stay on it as long as the dr. will keep prescribing it.

Since starting the Ritalin, I eat three meals a day, enjoy the food while I'm eating it, and then I'm done. It was quite an eye-opener. I thought "this is how normal people feel about food".

The Ritalin isn't making me "speed" but is providing enough energy for me to get on the treadmill for 30 mintues a day. Pre-BC I was anti-pill taker, but after a year I just figure whatever gets me through. I've already done the AC/Taxol/lapatinib, surgery, radiation. Now just need to get through Herceptin.

I'm nervous about weight gain with TMX but I am more nervous about going from stage1 to stage 4 BC. I guess I will have to pick my poison and watch what I put in my mouth more carefully.

I hate to say it but I've gained 10 pounds on Tamoxifen also.  I always had the pleasure of eating anything and not gaining weight until now.  I think the combo of menopause and Tamoxifen has really changed me.  I'm hungry all the time and can't resist food.  I hope this summer will be better since I exercise more and eat healthier out of the garden.  What a pain!!! Isn't breast cancer enough of a burden???? Do we need weight gain too?  At least it is nice to have company in the battle of the bulge:) lol.

    Hi All,

I've been on Tamoxifen for almost 4 years... The whole Tamoxifen/weight issue for me is a big issue!

I'm a veggie and pretty a healthy eater, but I certainly love my food and I have always been overweight. However, the year I was diagnosed, I had finally taken control of my weight issues, I got a dog and was walking every day and was finally loosing weight and toning up - I was in the best shape I was ever in! Then I was diagnosed with BC at the age of 27... Like someone else said, I think that loosing the weight helped me find the tumor??

Anyway, with 6 months of AC&T chemo, the weight started to pile on, even though I walked every day through chemo, except for the really bad days. I started Tamoxifen nearly a year after diagnosis and to date, I have put on 30 pounds... The weight went on really quickly, but has plateaued with minor fluctuations. Throughout this massive weight gain, I was walking every day and as usual, was eating healthily, not eating junk or fast foods etc... I am also a completely different body shape than I ever was. I always was pear shaped, but now, as I have taking with hiking and also so cycling, my legs are solid muscle - but I have that big flabby Tamoxifen tummy...

At this stage, I only have a year to go on Tamoxifen, so I'm resigned to the fact that I will be like this until then. It's frustrating and disheartening and it worries me sometimes when there is mention of weight contributing to BC and recurrences, but there's nothing I can do...? My only hope is that the weight will come off when I finish Tamoxifen!

    Take care,

    Mags x

I started tamox on Dec 1, 2009, added another 15 lbs to the 10 lbs I gained during chemo...

I went in for the BRCA genetic testing counseling this week, was bitching about weight gain and the dr actually said "we did this to you...with the chemo and medications we put you on to fight the cancer... your body chemistry, metabolism and hormones are out of whack..."  now she didn't offer any advise other then the usual "eat right, exercise" mantra but boy was it nice for someone from the medical community to acknowledge that it is not all my fault!

Like Mags, I am resigned to having to adjust to this new normal, I just hope that the changes I have made to diet and the little exercise I can do is enough to stave off any further weight gain... only I have 4 1/2 more yrs of Tamox to go :(.

    Hello.

It`s interesting to read all the comments.I have been on tamoxifen for 3 years and have gained weight. For a week I did not take it and started to lose weight.I`m back on it and have quickly gained weight. I think it is fluid retention.I wonder if anyone else has thought this.

    Hello,

To help me control my weight and food intake, I went on the livestrong website and under "diet and nutrition" you can register (for free) for my plate.com.

Myplate is amazing! It counts everything you eat (you don't have to type much, it has a selection of every food item you can think of, you just click on what you ate); it also counts everything you burned during the day (vaccumming counts! running! sitting at desk!); It then tells you how many calories you've consumed, how much fat, sodium, protein, etc. You can then  see if you went over the recommended daily intake and see what you might need to cut or what you might need to add. For example, it showed that I ate too much sodium but not enough fiber, but that my daily calorie intake was under the recommended daily calorie intake.

Myplate is VERY GOOD, I recommend it! It can definitely help with losing weight.

    Hi all

I've been on tamoxifen for one year and have lost 40 lbs since diagnosis. It can be done and I don't think tamoxifen really causes weight gain. I did not have chemo, so started tam toward the end of RT. I started exercising and reducing calories during RT and carried on into Tam period. I went from size 14 to 6, L to S.

I would also recommend a website with tools to help you lose: caloriecount.about.com. It is also free, and I don't know if it is better than Myplate, just another option that helped me. Good luck!

    Hi ladies...

Since my first post I found myself in another funk.

Very discouraging as I used to be in really good shape, felt good about myself and always fit into my clothes....now I just simply feel gross.

I have decided to book a personal trainer for a couple of days a week.  This is going to cost me a small fortune but I really have no choice in the matter...I basically can no longer motivate myself.

My husband and I are also joining weight watchers.

So here we go...I need to lose 20lbs....and my accountability is to you...

I will keep you posted on my journey.

    Hugs and love...Kosh

I just booked my personal trainer (that I had before this all started) and first session is on Monday.
Yikes. I am nervous and excited.  I know I will not be able to perform at the level I was at before all this started but I am going to TRY not to let that discourage me - just start to build where I am now. He's very positive so that will help.  He pushes but hopefully NOT TOO HARD.

    I'll report back after Monday.

Had a great day today. Saw the onc - had a very nice brief visit, he pronounced me 'cured' and said to make an appt for October. I am dubious about the 'cured' concept, but not going back until October ROCKS! It was a really good visit.

Then tonight was the personal trainer appt. I was so pumped about the doctor's appt, I didn't have a chance to be nervous. I just went in and told him I was READY. I did a 10 min warm up on the elliptical and then we started. He gave me an hour non-cardio workout. We only did 1 set of each of the exercises - when I do it on my own, I will do the circuit twice or eventually 3x. But tonight ONCE was PLENTY. It was really hard but I was brave and pushed through. Then i had a 20 min time on the treadmill to finsh up. I came home TIRED & HUNGRY but really motivated. I know I always say I work out regularly, but this is kicking it up a notch. I am going to watch what I eat, and work really hard and be confident that even w the Tamox, my body is going to respond.

I have to do the workout he gave me on Wed and Fri, and do cardio in between (tues/thurs). Then I will see him one day next week for a new workout.

I am really happy & excited. I feel like I'M BACK BABY!

Amyisstrong: I am so happy for you !

Me too, seeing a personal trainer was the extra push I needed. Now I cannot imagine not working out and even though it has taken weeks before I could see any difference, I think I'm finally seeing the results of all the hard work.

    Hi Ladies!

I am so glad that the training is going well.

I went to the gym yesterday and did my leg workout b4 teaching my spin class..then did yoga.

Today, I have to teach yoga but will try get some cardio in first.

I went on the scale which I shouldn't have and it showed that I am 1 lb heavier - geez...lol  Not to stress....cuz sometimes you weigh more depending on what time of day it is...if the scale keeps going up I may just throw the scale onto the street!

    I am eating well too!

The real test will be this weekend when we head out of town...not sure how much gym exercise I will get but for sure will get some walks in.  Gotta be real right!!!

Hugs to you all and keep me posted :)

Am seeing the trainer again tomorrow night. Have been off of any sugar and most all carbs (bread etc) for a few weeks now. Am not getting on the scale (yet) but feel less bloated and a little thinner. The workouts are HARD but I am encouraged. We'll see what happens tomorrow night.

And I also try to eat green - plant based diet - (Not potatoes/corn, lol) - lots of salads and fresh stuff.

    LOL  Koshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  !!!

I switched off Tamoxifen bc at my 2.5 yrs of taking Tamoxifen I was still " Period Free " so they checked my LEVELS ......... and I am now menopausal BIG TIME when tested in Jan 2010 at the tender age of 45.   So on to Aromasin since studies show those doing well on Tamoxifen will continue to do so on Aromasin.  I still don't have any real se's I mean -- what is a hot flash ... alothough in Wisconsin with hot, humid days recently I do find my face appearing sweaty... or that shiny glow ...........

Weight Loss -- well it does get frustrating for me bc I exercise hard and often let the pounds go so slowlyyyyyyyyyy  -- it doesn't help that I am also hypothyroid ever since my late teens.  I can tell with Jazzercise though that I am firming up .. and feel better in clothes.... as we all know muscle weighs more then FAT... so I feel that I am losing.

I would love to do a personal trainer to move things along faster per se -- but with the thyroid issues it would be like throwing $$$ out the window ... Couple yrs ago I did weight watchers  - followed the points religiously but still didn't drop pounds like they others did .... grrrrrrr....

I also just not much of a water drinker ---- I wish I had someone look me in the eyes and say --- girl if you drink 8-10 cups of water daily you would definately see RESULTS.  Heck I even stopped drinking my one a day can of Mt Dew -- for mths now -- drinking diet AW Root Beer ... won't u think just that one change would drop the pounds ???

KOSH I will PM my email to you.   xxx

    Hello!

It is me Koshka reporting in that I lost 5lbs!  So far this week I have been doing at least 45 min to 60minutes of cardio a day and have started lifting weights and targeting specific areas.

I have also been using this program:

    www.fatsecret.com

I go in there and log my daily food intake and exercise and it tells me how I am doing.  I am on an 1800 calorie a day plan.  I have never used anything like this b4 and have found it quite helpful.  Yesterday I had olive oil on my tossed salad..when I went to log into the olive oil on my daily meal it said it was 120 calories!!! Ummm...k...I know Olive Oil is good for you but i wont be doing that again soon!!!

    Hugs!!!!

    Congratulations Koshka!!!

I am losing weight too.  Am doing my M/W/F killer weights workout from the trainer and cardio or the Jillian DVD the other days.  My trainer said do not weigh more than 1x/month but judge by how your clothes fit. I can tell I am trimming down  a little.  Am eating 3 simple meals day/ low carbs, lower fat, no sugar.  Feel GREAT!

I feel like when I started Tamox, my body just went CRAZY. I truly could NOT STOP eating or gaining. That has passed now and I have self discipline and feel more like my 'old' self.

Keep it up ladies. We can do this!

    Hey Amy,

I hear ya on the crazy weight gain...I did the same thing.

Part of it is the Tamox.

But the other part of it has been my eating habits, my lack of commitment to cardio..and basically all the stress. Who wants to go to the gym when you are in constant worry and depressed? I spent soooo much time in the chat room during all of this - I cannot begin to tell you how many snacks I ate while chatting...and sitting on my butt!

Sooo now this new source of motivation is refreshing....and I am going to keep it on a roll.  I feel sooo much better. :)

    Keep me posted!!!!

    Hugs...Kosh
