Anybody get depressed while taking an antidepressant???
Hey ladies -
I'm taking 150mg of Effexor for a month, and 75mg for a month before that, and I've been very depressed lately. Do I need to give it more time, or is depression a side effect of this particular anti-depressant...LOL? Any suggestions?

Hi E.
I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 about 17 years ago with depression, I have been on many medications and Zoloft seemed to work the best with it, but I still get depressed from time to time. I have been off it for 3 months right now due to no insurance and money to go see the Dr to get the script. I tried effexor which really did nothing for me, I stayed depressed alot more on it. You need to talk to your Dr and explain that you don't feel any different on it and you would like to try something else. Dr's don't always know what's best for you if you don't tell them how you feel and what you feel about the medication you are on. Good Luck with it.

Hi Enjoyful,
Sounds like this med might not be the one for you. You would have noticed a change after about a week or two. I don't know if you're on Tamox or AI, but if you are, another one you could try is Celexa. It's doesn't interfere with Tamox or AI's.
My doc added Abilify to my antidepressant .. because I was so down and out, even on meds. This has caused a miraculous change in my mood. I'm on 60 mg daily Celexa and 2 mg Abilify.
I only wish I had spoken to my PCP sooner. I suffered for months on end when I didn't need to.
lots of hugs,
Bren
PS ... E, I know you're participating in a trial to start soon (kudos) ... check with your doc and seen what med you can take or if it will interfere with your new protocol.
-
Kart .. you might try checking the website for the manufacturers of your meds. Awhile back I didn't have insurance and was able to get the meds I was taking at that time free from the manufacturer. For instance, if it's made by Johnson&Johnson, they send you a credit card-type of card to use when you pick up that medication.
Good luck!

I am amazed that doctors still prescribe Effexor. The severe side effects are known for a long time now (among which, severe depression and suicidal impulses) and not ony that, but it is one of the very few that it is almost impossible to get off of, as the withdrawal is extreme and can cause severe exacerbation of the side effects.
see:
http://www.drugs.com/sfx/effexor-side-effects.html
I would talk to your doctor asap to put you on a different medicine, you haven't taken it for a long time and it is possible that you get off it if you start asap.
Did you try alternative medicine? Acupuncture, meditation, relaxation, yoga?
-
Day .. I'm not sure alternative medicine alone can "cure" major depressive disorder. It sure can't hurt, but I'm skeptical of it alone remediating this disease I suffer from. As with breast cancer, alternative can help, but you wouldn't turn down chemo if it would save your life. A good combo of western and alternative medicine might be the way to go. Vigorous work outside on my property alleviates many of my symptoms!
I agree about Effexor. I would never take that, and refused when my rad onc offered it. The side-effects when trying to quit are horrendous and it can take months to wean off that med. Thanks for the link.

a close relative did get more depressed and generally was worse off when on an anti-depressant. Turned out her issue was bipolar, and once the correct meds were in place everything improved.
Hope all gets better soon.

Thanks, everyone! And a big YIKES to hear about Effexor side effects and withdrawal. I'll definitely bring that up with my dr next time I see him.
I took Zoloft years ago and felt wonderful, but was far more impulsive and got into some spending trouble. Not sure what the right meds are, and I hate to experiment with the clinical trial coming up. I'm not horribly depressed yet, just down and not myself.
I know, right? Stage IV and depressed - who woulda thought? LOL

Enjoyful .. could be some anxiety happening as well. I think being anxious can feel like sadness too. Especially facing the upcoming trial. I would be nervous as hell. You're riding the rollercoaster .. if meds can help slow that ride .. please talk to your doc about it. I'm not in your place, but Space Mountain was getting to be more than I could bear.
Keep us posted ..
love you,
Bren
-
Enjoyful,
The spending trouble you bring up is an effect of bipolar 2, have you asked your Dr about being bipolar also. I am and I am on Nuerontin, and Trileptal for it. I went thru serious highs and spending sprees, then wicked lows until I went on the meds. I would ask you Dr about being bipolar 2, which is not as severe as bipolar 1. Praying for you.

Hey E ... some meds can make us go crazy! A dear friend of mine with Parkinson's was taking a prescribed med to treat it .. and it turned her into a spender. This was a side-effect of the medication.
How are you today? Better, I hope.

Bren

Good morning!!
Thank you, thank you all for your caring and concern. I'm heading out the door now to take my daughter to new student orientation (university), but will post in more detail later.
You ladies are amazing, and so kind. Love you all!

I'm back! Beautiful weather but it sure tired me out.
Bren - I did start to feel better after starting the Effexor, then took a nosedive. My ex-husband started dating a girl young enough to be his daughter, and now pays even LESS attention to his real daughter. Discussions with him have gotten nowhere. Being Stage IV, I'm in something of a panic thinking that I could die within the next few years, leaving my daughter with an uninvolved butthead for a parent. So frustrating! Thankfully, she's almost 19 and just seems exasperated by the whole thing rather than hurt. But good grief!
Day - Thanks for the suggestions! I was doing yoga and acupuncture for a while but stopped because of fatigue and a money shortage. (Did I mention that Dad isn't contributing to daughter's university tuition??) I need to get back to yoga, at least. Thanks for the reminder!
Sunflowers - your name suits you! I love sunflowers because they make me smile just to look at them. I have a friend who's always smiling - I tell her she has a "sunflower face." :-) Thank you for the Effexor warnings...double yikes! I will definitely bring it up with my dr when I see him next. Maybe I'll go back on Zoloft but glue my wallet shut!
moogie and Kartiae - The spending trouble only happens on Zoloft; I'm a pretty good saver otherwise. But the bipolar issue bears looking into. One of my sisters is bipolar and we all (five of us) suffer from some sort of mental issue.
I hope I didn't miss anybody! Everyone, thank you so much for your prayers and good thoughts. You've all given me some really good ideas. Any suggestions on dealing with an idiot ex? :-)

If you are bipolar 2, antidepressants will not help. they will for a while, but then you end up taking more and more and they still don't work. I have been on Lamictal for about 2 years (after 17 years of Prozac) and it has really helped. I am also taking Seroquel which works very well. Bipolar 2 is hard to diagnose as its not as obvious and people/physiciants are not as aware of it. One of the distingishing features irritability and I was incredibly irritable and depressed.

Enjoyful,
If you want to go back on yoga, there are plenty of free videos (even on youtube). But personally I think that what you need more is something like Tai Chi - it works better when it comes to relaxation and treating depression. There are plenty of free videos on that too, and with the spring being here, you might enjoy it better (ta chi is the best done out in nature). There is something about spring that makes us come back from the dark deep hole we fall during winter.
Here, I found some for you:

It's fine, Bren! t wouldn't have been so beautiful without it beng so huge!
Gardening is a wonderful anti-depressant. It may be hard to do it for some of us because of the surgeries weve been through, but it still is possible to do it. This year I wasn't able to do as much as before, but I still was able to putter here and there, and get more plants started in pots (my boyfriend will help me when the time comes to re-plant them in the ground). I'm just sitting on the ground and weed and plant - I got me some small gardening tools and they work just fine. I cant' do much at once, I work about 15 minutes, then get back in the house and sit or lay down for a while, then go back outside. If it's not windy, I go outside on the lawn chaireither with the laptop or with a book, and sometimes I even nap. This year I focused more on fragrant herbs and only a few flowers.
When you garden, it lifts your spirits. Every plant you seed is a hope for a tomorrow.
-
Day ... so glad you can get outside and weed for a little bit each day. You're still recovering from surgery and ongoing treatment. I was diagnosed in March of '07 and had rads through July. I couldn't do anything in the yard, and was so sad about it. Three years later, and I've got almost 4 of my 5 acres looking beautiful. We've got a huge veggie garden and I have flower gardens all over the place.
I'll post a pic of my container garden on the front porch.
Gardening ... putting up fences, mowing, etc., keeps me sane.
hugs,
Bren

Oh how gorgeous! Spring must have come earlier where you are - we had our last bout of snow on the .. spring equinox and the last frost a week ago. I've been putterng all day in the garden - as I said, can't do much at once, and have to take very frequent breaks. But it is so beautiful out! I never use weedkiller my backyard - for several reasons, one, my dogs eat grass (like all dogs), two, I am a herbal healing person and I have a lot of "useful weeds" (like dandelion, several kinds of mint, wormwood, yarrow, and others) so my backyard is usually dotted with all kinds of blooms. I noticed today that my leatherleaf is in bloom - and my weeping willow is all covered in leaves, in only one week. I'm waiting now for a Home Depot gift card to come in the mail (from my debit card rewards) to go and get some potted flowers. I already put seeds in the ground for marigolds, petunias, cosmos, hollyhocks, snapdragons, daisies and a few more, and still have more seeds to plant. I'm waiting for a friend to bring me some lily-of-the-valley. As herbs I've already planted lovage, basil, dill, and spearmint. I am nuts with the mint, I have chocolate mint, apple mint, pineapple mint, orange mint. They make exquisite herbal teas.

BinVa-your porch looks so homey and comfortable. Love it!!
-
Thanks! The pic is from last summer ... getting ready to fill the pots and set the porch up again!
I like to paint the old pots, rather than buy new ones. As soon as I have my flowers in them, I'll post a recent pic! Another cheap tip is to spray paint the plastic pots into vibrant colors. I have a picture somewhere of small painted water cans hanging on a fence. Would like to try that this year too.
E .. hope all is well with you today and you had a nice time with DD.
love,
Bren
Edited: Something I'd like to try!

Bren!
How beautiful! I want to come and sit on your porch and have a cup of coffee or something with you!
I live in Maine, and I have to fight off my winter moods. When I want someone to give me a cigarette, a blindfold......line me up and put me out of my misery...I go to a spare room where I have a wall of summer pictures from Rockport Mass! It's one of our favorite places to visit and the flowers around town are so beautiful.
I always joke that I have a gangreen thumb! I love my garden but I have NO idea what I'm doing.I don't dare to do too much weeding in the spring because I can't always tell when I might be yanking out a flower when I think it's a weed! Some of my favorite flowers are peonies and Mona Lisa lillies.
We are having an amazing spring this year. We've had some really warm days. It's perfect right now when you get a warm day and it's still before black fly and misquitoe season!
Thanks for sharing!

Candi .. you sound just like me in the winter .. my mood is dark too. The only thing to do outdoors is shovel snow! waaahhh.
April is a perfect month is S.W. Virginia. Low humidity and the sun is shining!
My depression was so poorly controlled on just the Celexa, until my PCP added Abilify two months ago. I feel like my old self now ... the sunshine helps too.

Hi Ladies -
Just wanted to contribute about Effexor. My sister was on it for some time, prescribed for hot flashes when she went into early menopause. She had an AWFUL time on it and decided she needed to get off it. Well, the withdrawal from Effexor was very difficult, but she has finally done it. I guess the key is in stepping down the medication a little at a time.
My onc suggested Effexor for my chemo hot flashes. I said NO WAY! Why isn't there an antidepressant that makes you lose weight? I think I'm depressed because of my 25 lb. chemo baby ( I am now 8 weeks post final chemo and still haven't started losing weight).
Hope you all have a wonderful day!
Laura
-
Celexa doesn't interfere with Tamoxifen metabolization .. neither does Abilify. I haven't found either one to cause weight gain. Another mood stabilizer is Topamax, which causes weight loss.
I didn't have chemo .. my weight gain ramped up when I was dx'd and my HRT was abruptly stopped. I've gained 20 lbs over 3 years and just can seem to get rid of it.
I've heard the same things about Effexor withdrawal. I also turned down that med when my rad onc offered it.

I got extremely depressed on Effexor, which was prescribed for my meno symptoms. How odd that it works great for symptom control, but made me want to curl up in corner and never move again! My onc prescribed me a natural compounded prescription called bellergril ? sp and it worked wonders in days with ZERO side effects. I think Effexor is The Devil in pill form!
XOXO,
Regina

Bellergal is a combo of belladonna, ergotamine and phenobarbital. I've taken it before for stomach spasms.

Hey E ... I've been thinking about you. Sending you a big squishy hug!
Day .. I read on another thread you had good news about your insurance. So happy to hear this. I'm low income these days too, and was treated through our state Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening program. I was lucky that I qualified, as I'm self-employed and I had no insurance. I also submitted the paperwork for the Making Home Affordable program. If you own your own home, this might help you out. If your monthly mortgage is more than 31% of your income, you may qualify. It doesn't lower your mortgage, but restructures it at a lower interest rate, while adding on a few yours to the life of your mortgage.
Hope all are feeling better ...
Love,
Bren

Bren....your flowers are beautiful!!!! hugs, Karen

Hey everybody!
Thank you for the beautiful sunflowers and the squishy hug, Bren!! I vote we all go to live at Bren's house. :-)
