Why now?
I had a BMX Nov 18th, started chemo Dec 15th (AC x4, then Taxol x4) and thought I was done. Surprize. NOW my oncologist is considering radiation AND he put me on Tamoxifen! I was told I'd need neither and no explanation was offered as to why the change of heart? I did have one lymph node obliterated by cancer with extranodal extension (cancer on the outside of the lymph node) but they knew that before treatment started, so why the change now? Anyone with any insight? I do NOT want to do radiation, that is why I had the BMX!

I think it is best if as aggressive as possible treatment is pursued in the beginning to avoid reoccurance... to put it simply.
radiation is not so bad. good luck with your decision. It seems as if they trickle the information they give you bit by bit so you don't freak.

Hi
My onc said that radiation was/is a preventative process....like weeding your yard, you may think you got all of weeds, but if only one weed is there, it will come back. they want to make sure all the cancer cells are gone in that area. I had 33 rounds. It was not bad for me. It just took up daily time for all 33.
Take care!

Hi
My oncologist said that doing radiation is a precaution....he compared the additional treatment like weeding your yard....when you weed your yard, if one weed is missed, then more come back...with radiation treatment, they are trying to kill all the cancer cells in that area.
I hope this helps!
Take care!

Thanks to both of you! I'm not quite as P.O.'d now. I just talked to my oncologist and yes, I'm having a consult with the radiation doctor to see if he advises radiation. I was under the impression that once I was done with chemo I'd be DONE, but that is not the case. I would much rather finish what we've started now than to have to start all over again somewhere down the road! So, if I must have radiation, bleh, but I'll do it. The Tamoxifen is no big deal, I was just so disappointed that I'm not really DONE. I'm over it now.

I had radiation after mastectomy as well. And it came as a surprise, too, since all the docs I had seen before said no radiaiton needed. The rad onc is the one who decided I did need the radiation. She said I was somewhat in the gray area for it (small, but clear margins--3mm) no lymph involvement, but what pushed her to recommend the radiation for sure was a combo of my age (38), the grade of the cancer (3) and the DCIS found did not clear the margins. So off to radiation I went. It really wasn't nearly as bad or hard as I had anticipated. Going every day sucked, but it actually went by pretty quickly since it just became a part of my daily ritual. My rad onc said that local recurrences OFTEN eventually end up in metastatic cancer, so she wanted to be as aggressive as possible. I didn't question it too much after that.
Edited to add: I forgot to mention that when I saw the rad onc, she told me that she sure was glad that even though my onc and other docs didn't think I needed the radiation, that they allowed me to have the referral--otherwise she said I would have been one of the ones "lost in the cracks!" At least now, if the cancer comes back locally, I can't say, "Oh I wish I would've done radiation!"

Good point weety! I may as well through the whole regime at it for no regrets later. My oncologist is a really nice man; he called me today to tell me about my appointment with the radiation oncologist and reaffirmed that it was indeed the extradoal extensions bugging him. He doesn't want any regrets either! I'll have to drive an hour each way, but it's all do-able. I'm glad you weren't lost in the cracks!
