got my final path report
My DCIS ended up being 6 1/2cm! Wow, that's a lot on a AA breast. I still can't believe only 1cm showed on any diagnostic testing. Thank God I found that little lump. The good news is that is was all DCIS and my nodes are clean. The bad news is we didn't get good margins so I will need radiation. She went down to my chest muscle and even scrapped the lining of the muscle and got only 1mm margin. On the anterior side we only got 1mm as well. So, good and not great news. I say after that surgery I can handle anything.
Thanks everyone for being so supportive through this whole thing. I would have been in a nut bin a long time ago had it not been for these boards.

Thank God NO NODES. Others can tell you, I'm sure, but my friend who had radiation also said that, compared to the surgery, it's very easy, and then YOU'RE DONE. SO much better that they're being so cautious!
-
Just replied to you on the other thread. I am really, really glad you got clean nodes and all DCIS. That is a huge deal. I think your doctor must be really careful and cautious, which is exactly what you want. And you will be able to breathe easier when it's done knowing you did everything you could and should do.
-
Thank goodness! I am in the middle of rads now, and after all you've been through, it will be a very easy thing. I am glad that your BS is being so cautious about it all, and that there was no node involvement. Thank goodness for small miracles.
-
No nodes is good nodes, get it? LOL I had to have a re-excision because of the margins were too close for comfort also, DCIS was in the same vicinity as my IDC. The DCIS did not show on mammo so that is why I had the re-excision.

I had 3 lumpectomies for DCIS only because I insisted that I didn't want a mastectomy for DCIS. After the margins were not clear after the 2nd sx by breast surgeon wanted to go the mastectomy route. It took the 3rd lumpectomy to get clear margins. My breasts are very uneven and I have a seroma in my left breast but I am glad I did it my way. What decision I made wasn't as important as my making a decision for myself when everything seemed out of control. Being in control of how I wanted my body handled gave me a strength I needed. I had 3 days of brachiotherapy when the radiologic oncologist told me that since I had healed somewhat between operation one and three and that the brachiotherapy didn;t cover all the areas it needed to. So I (with my oncologist's encouragement) went to visit my sons and grandchildren in Israel for 3 weeks and then upon return had 5 weeks of daily whole breast radiation. My left breast looks like hell but it is just a battlescar. I made it through.

Glad to hear about clear nodes! I didn't have rads but my mom did and she said that it isn't that bad, sure easier than the surgery.

that's how I feel....after the mast surgery rads will be a piece of cake. I had a feeling I wouldn't be done even with the mast. Sometimes we just 'know'. I'd rather throw everything at it now and not have to revisit in the future.

The big picture is good news! No nasty invasions, but as someone else whose dcis was somehow gigantic after only showing a few microcalcifications...This process of getting the dcis is like wiley coyote...you chase it and chase it with everything but the kitchen sink. Hang in there!
-
forgot to ask...did anyone else have both comedo and non-comdeo necrosis? My lump was taken out with my lumpectomy and that came back comedo necrosis grade 2/3. My mast came back non-comedo necrosis grade 2/3. I guess it's common to have a mix of things with the DCIS?
-
I had pretty much every type of DCIS all mixed together - mostly grade 3 but some grade 2, comedonecrosis in some areas, solid, cribiform, papillary, micropapillary, plus ADH, sclerosing adenosis, columnar cell change and a bunch of other non-malignant conditions. So yes, I think it's quite common for DCIS to be a mix of different conditions.
-
Like Beesie, I also had a melange of stuff. Grade 2, grade 3, comedo, noncomedo, several different malignant cell types, DCIS, LCIS, ADH, (maybe also ALH, I don't remember), columnar change....blah blah fecking blah....
BLAH!
On the other hand, at least there was no invasive component! YAY!
-
Yes, like Beesie and sweatyspice, I had a fruit salad of cells: DCIS, 1.75 mm IDC, comedo and noncomedo, mostly grade 2 with some grade 1, solid, cribiform, papilloma, variety of benign/fibroad. Surgeon took quite a slice to get all of the DCIS: measuring 8.3 cm x 7.0 cm and then he took a "wider excision" of 3.5 cm x 2 cm to add to the margin -- all in one partial mast. surgery.
I'm nearly done with rads (today's my last full breast zap, #25 of 25, then I just have 5 boosts) and am opting out of tamoxifen.

Thanks everyone! I figured it was the norm to have a wide variety in there. I meet with my rad onc April 20. Anxious to get this moving so I can hurry up and move on. I am sick of cancer.
