AndreaS and all,
The hill climb up Madison went surprisingly well. I allotted 24 minutes to walking up from 2d but actually got there in 15. I guess I have been spending more time contemplating the contents of the deli window than I thought! The good part was that I can definitely walk up, get treatment, do my stomach crunches on the floor of the dressing room [I toss the gown on the floor and do crunches while I wait for my creme application to dry/soak in] and race down the hill all on my lunch hour. Based on google maps the round trip will give me a healthy 1.2 ish mile walk too which is good for my optimistic lose weight on rads while eatting chocolate program.
As for the topless in the privacy of your bedroom, Not Good Enough! You need a locking office door like I have!
June2268, I would not expect a lump in throat to be a SE of rads. That seems to me to be too far out of the field of zapping. Perhaps you are coming down with something?
-
Hi all - Today was my 22nd so far. I met with my doctor who reassured me that they are not decreasing my treatments or uping the dose. I will have the scheduled 28 treatments and 8 boosts. I will have my 23rd treatment tomorrow at my regular facility and start the rest of my plan at the new facility. She explained that they were suppose to start construction in January and then were told it was delayed until May and now they are starting 4/15. I will have the same techs and my same doctor. So of course the tech felt terrible for telling me all the wrong info - all is well in my radiation world. My breast is pretty red and I'm using the Eclair creme 3 times a day, it seems to help. I wear my husbands tee shirts under my clothes - no bra unless it a must do - I've only had to put it on about 3 times.
Stay well. Kathy
-
June2268 - I had that lump in my throat feeling too. It came and went and sometimes I'd get a bit of reflux & heartburn too.
Are your collar bone and neck area being radiated? MIne was and so I attributed it to that.
During this whole treatment time - 6 weeks - I've managed to miss everything that is going around even though my hubby and kids brought home coughs, colds and flus!
Today the tech told me that I may blister/break under my arm and on my collar bone after rads is over. If that happens he told me not to put anything on it - except maybe polysporin if needed.
Hope everyone is coping with their treatments and checking off the days!
Marie

Oh I forgot to add that the dr told me today that I will have a follow up appt with the med onc in 6 weeks.
I guess this is standard procedure? I thought after tomorrow I'd never have to set foot in the place again but I guess I'm wrong!
-
Marie-
I finished rads last Monday, and I am seeing both my medical onc and rads onc in about 5 weeks. The rads onc is just a followup visit to make sure I've recovered from rads, and the med onc visit is to followup on my starting of Tamoxifen. I also know that I will be having my first followup mammogram on my affected breast in June-6 months after my surgery, then a mammogram on both breasts in December. I have a feeling my doctors and I will be seeing each other for quite some time!
I have not had any more side effects from radiation since finishing last Monday. I'm really looking forward to being able to use deodorant and being able to shave my armpit again. The doctor said I can as soon as my burn goes away.
Mary
-
I finished chemo in early Feb. and my medical onc said he'd see me in three to four months and when I left that day, they handed me a sheet with the appt. date in July...five months out. Go figure! I won't be getting Tamoxifen as I'm hormone negative so I'm not sure what that visit will be about. My surgeon wants to see me every three months so I think he's my main doctor. I'm going to ask the rads onc tomorrow what his "plan" is for me in terms of follow up. Thirteen down...eight more to go. So far my skin is doing fine but is getting pink. Fingers crossed it holds up.
Sherri
-
21 down 12 to go. I am getting red now, under my arm and between my breasts, doc gave me domoboro wet dressing to use. It does take the itch away. The knot under my nipple from surgery scar tissue causes me more trouble than the skin. I have to wear a bra or it really pains. It looks like a bruise just above my nipple and the weight of my breast hanging is not comfortable at all. When I have asked about it I get no answers
Flo

Marie I have the heartburn on occasion and it is just mild but the lump in my throat is new to me and no I am having only the breast done so I cannot understand that part of it......I am waiting to meet with the nurse or the doc soon and I guess I will know more later......I am so not the hypochondriac type, but this feeling is just gagging me.......but go figure I have no problem still eating....lol
-
I did have a bad burn in the area of my underarm and going down the side from under arm by the breast and where the incision from surgery was. I got my hand held mirror to see closer and that area has now turned a dark brown, however the skin is not tanning per se, but it looks like the skin from the burn is turning into dead skin and will eventually peel. (at top by under arm there are two spots peeling).
Oh as for seeing surgeon, now I have to wonder here. I had my last surgery in October 2009, and had a follow up to the surgery 3 weeks later. What I find odd, is that the surgeons office never scheduled me an appt for the new year (knowing full well that I would be going for chemo and RADS in the new year) and has not even made any attempts to call me to schedule an appt. I know several people here locally that also had this very same surgeon that I do and had surgery around same time as I did and have a scheduled appt with him for April. Have to wonder why a follow up was never scheduled for me.. hmmm
I would think after my cancer treatments he would want to see me?
Charmaine
-
Charmaine - I would think he would want to see you . . . and you him. My surgeon scheduled back-to-back 6 month mammogram and follow-up appointment at our last session. It's helpful to have someone steering a bit. I'm anticipating that my rad.onc. is also going to schedule a follow-up appointment once I finish the 30 treatments. Rad.onc. also sent me to have a post-op/pre-rad. baseline mammogram (surgeon had said I didn't need it/didn't sign off), so even within the same building, drs. have differing opinions, and unfortunately we then must fight for ourselves.
Regarding other discussion about lump in throat, it might be due to a weakened immune system and hopefully will just pass as your body adjusts. I did have throat discomfort earlier, not so much a lump as what felt like the start of step but then it passed. I would closely monitor that and tell your dr and techs.
Congrats. to you and everyone else here who has recently finished, and good luck to those just beginning. This afternoon I will shove SLAM DUNK GOWN #24 of 25 full-breast treatments in cancer's face. Just sporting a red left breast, nothing more than I've already had this week.
Monday will mark my final regular zap, and then next Tue-Mon. will be the 5 boosts to my scar area.
-
CTMOM1234: I am probably going to give my surgeon a call in the next couple of weeks and see if perhaps a 6 month follow up was scheduled and maybe I just lost the appt card?? As for the RAD Oncologist, have an appt with him May 12. I saw the Medical Oncologist April 6th and will be following up with him again in November and then once a year every November.
Charmaine
-
I am supposed to see my oncologist at the end of Zaps. At that time they will do lots of blood work before tamoxifen. I am supposed to see my surgeon every 6 months for at least a year. It may go to every year for 4 years after that but I'm not sure. I have no idea what the schedule is for the ZapDoc but I suspect that I will be seeing her as soon as she is off maternity leave.
13 down 20 to go. My regular ZapTech was out today so it was --to me--a bunch of strangers which isn't exactly fair since the one women is my regular ZapTech's partner and she has been with him several times. Still, I miss the regular guy----
-he inspires confidence! My new 11:30 time slot isn't working out nearly as well as I had hoped. It seems like I just get started at work and then I have to leave and I come back and get started and then its time to leave. I asked the tech if there was any chance of another appointment. Most aggrevating since I was sure this was going to be perfect.
Other than that, it was a very sunny day and the walk up the hill went fine which is a VERY GOOD THING because there were lots of graduates from ZapLand today which means Lots of Treats which means I have to do a bike ride this afternoon if I'm really to get any exercise because my walk to/from ZapLand was barely enough to burn the calories from the 2 1/2 pieces of chocolate [I picked chocolate with nuts, thats healthy, right?
] and the ginger molasses cookie I sucked down in the waiting room. . . .NOTE TO SELF: Eat before Zaps!
Hope Everyone has a Lovely Friday and a Great Weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
3monst - chocolate with nuts is most certainly healthy! Tell yourself that enough times and it will be TRUE! I bought Intense Chocolate flavored ice cream, upping the dose of chocolate per bite. And I expect to be swimsuit ready by June? Ugh, better stop buying ice cream. Boo!
Finished #20 today, and just barely pink on the side of my breast/under my arm. I've gotten away lucky so far. One more week of regular tx, then boosts for a week. Crossing fingers that I stay lucky as far as s/e's go! I'm still able to wear a bra, which is good since I'm a D on one side and a DD on the other. Others' boobs are swelling, mine is shrinking! I'm very lopsided now, it's more noticeable since I started rads.
Have a great day/evening everyone!
Blessings,
Shelby

Exactly at the half-way point now...15 down, 15 more to go. So far, no real bad side effects yet. No fatigue to speak of. I am starting to get a pink/tan color to the skin and a slight irritation at times around the nipple, but nothing terrible. My last 5 treaments will be boosts. To those who have already finished treatment...how were the boosts? Did you get the most skin irritation, etc. with those?
The techs are allowing me to wear my own bathrobe to my treaments. I am very small and those silly blue hospital gowns are so big I was always swimming in them and no matter how I tied them, something was always flapping open and I'd end up flashing half the people (NOT a pretty sight!). I guess they didn't want me arrested for indecent exposure, so they said I could bring my own robe from home which is a very good thing

I hope everyone has a nice zap-free weekend
-
Woo-hoo!!!! I am done!!! Number 30 of 30 completed today
They didn't ring any bells but I got a certificate of completion. Plus I get to take home the hand made quilt (A local ladies group makes quilts for the cancer center. When treatment began I got to pick one which the techs tagged as mine; it was nice getting covered up with that every day instead of a hospital sheet.) The rad doc wants to followup in 5 weeks and he said at that time he'll give me the specifics for taking vitamen E. He said it's too early to take now but it will help the healing of scar tissue. He said I probably won't be ready for a mammogram for another 2-3 months.
Next I'll be learning all about hormone therapy. Plus I think I'm going to have switch from Zoloft to Effexor which makes me nervous. But that's another chapter in this "C" drama and I want to revel in finishing the radiation one. I think I'll start with dinner out tonite.
-
So, I had treatment number......? today. I think it might be #17. That is sad that I have no recollection. One might think my brain was being radiated instead of my breast.
Lots of work, lots of pressure. Trying to keep it all in perspective so I don't go overboard with any of the stress. I intend to have a beautiful weekend with a walk/run at the lake and some yoga. Friends coming over on Sunday afternoon to enjoy the day with us and BBQ a bit. We will drink wine, watch the kids run and play and just enjoy the beautiful N. Texas weather.
I slam dunked it today, and am soooo glad to have a break for 2 days! YAHOO!!
-
MjZ...Congratualtions!!1
I had #18 of 33 today. Felt more itching and some soreness and am quite red. Starting to feel tired earlier. Trying not to freak out over hip and lower back pain, telling myself it's just from excerising. Would not have thought twice about it before cancer! I see my onc. next week to discuss tamoxifen and so forth. Not looking forward to that..I think it will be worse than radiation for me. Have a good weekend everyone.
-
Ok ladies-
I just finished my rads last Monday-yay!
Opened my mail today to the first insurance statement for my first 8 rads treatment plus the simulation and set up. Total billed to my insurance....$47,000. Boggles the mind, doesn't it?? I have yet to see the bill for the remaining 25 rads treatments. And that doesn't even include the radiation onc's fees.....
I am so grateful that I have insurance.
Mary
-
Mary - wow...that's incredible how much it costs. I had no idea. I'm in Canada and our medical/hospital costs are covered by the provincial government so we don't pay or ever see any of the costs behind the scenes.
I'm done 14 regular full breast treatments with two more to go next week...then my five boosts begin on Wednesday. I saw the doctor today and he was happy with how my skin is holding up. I'm looking forward to a two-day break from rads. I'm off now for my treadmill exercise even though I don't feel like doing it.
Sherri
-
Yes, the bills here are frightening. Total billed to my insurance so far (before rads) was $250,000. Mind you insurance only paid half of that. I was insured with Aetna through Feb and they paid everything except my copays. Then my insurance switched to United Healtcare and they pay 90%. So I'll be liable for some of the rads cost. I'm on COBRA but that runs out in August. Was laid off before all this happened. Not sure what I'm going to do if I don't get a job before August.
-
Good news!! Originally I was told 33, 3 being boosts, today I was told 28 reg and 4 boosts. So there is one I don't have to have. Other than that all is the same with me, same redness and irritation but nothing worse than it has been. Have a great week end every one.
Flo

Congratulations to everyone that finished this week. I finished 9 days ago. There's no change in my skin - not better or worse, still dark. There are fewer fatigue days, and it takes longer to surface, but still makes me want to stop everything when it hits. I'm looking forward to a 'nothing' weekend.
-
25 down and 7 boosts to go. I will admit that I now have the red burn and some itching. I broke down and used some hydrocortisone gel w/ aloe. I had been on the Aquaphor for the duration of the 25 tx's. Although I throughly enjoy the rad techs- I will be happy to have my regular schedule back.
-
Congrats. to those who finished this week & it's nice that you are continue to post with updates.
Charmaine - Glad you're calling, sounds like a good plan.
LOVED LOVED LOVED SLAM DUNKING GOWN #24 this afternoon (Monday will be my last regular treatment (#25) and then I have 5 boosts). Ouchy, stick me with a fork, I'm RED and done. Thank god it's Friday!
May you all have a wonderfully healthy and happy weekend.
-
I finished rads today and slam dunked my robe and the bag that I kept my clothes in while at the treatment centre.
There was a bit of a mix up - a new tech told me to have a good weekend and to make sure I put lots of lotion on my skin before I start up again on Monday. What?!? I reminded her that I was done, she checked my chart and agreed.
I'm done!
Now I just need my skin to heal and my days to be my own again!
I started peeling under my arm today and have a small blister on my collar bone that might break. The dr on call gave me another RX for a anti fungal cream if needed.
As I left I said good bye everyone, good bye change rooms, good bye waiting room, good bye water cooler, good bye bathroom, good bye exit sign, good bye parking garage, good bye parking attendant....you get the idea!
Congrats to those that finished this week too and hang in there to those that are going back for more tx next week.
I hope you ALL have a great weekend!
Marie
-
Marie, I'm doing the happy dance for you! Glad you're through this hurdle, you and all of the other sisters who have finished this phase of the journey.
I just finished week #4, and haven't really had much in the way of redness or itchiness (thank goodness!), just some minor irritation under my arm. Does this mean I might not have too bad burning with just 2 weeks to go? I'm really crossing my fingers! Or were some of you ok at the end of week 4 and the last 2 weeks did it in for you?
Thanks for listening!
Peace,
Shelby
-
Congrats to all who have finished....YEAH!!! So happy for all you who are getting your lives back to normal. I have 7 to go and I will be joining.....To all of us who are still on this journey, have a relaxing weekend and then back to ZAPWORLD on Monday.....we'll make it.
-
Hurray for all that finished this week!!!! WOO-HOO!!!! I can only imagine how excited you must be to be through!
Just wondering if everyone applies their lotions/creams during the weekend? I wasn't told to do so, but I would imagine that it's not a bad idea.
10 down for me - so far so good.
I hope everyone enjoys their break from rads this weekend!
Etk02038 - I know what you meant about the hip pain - my hips have been really bothering me at night and I also try to convince myself that I am just working out too hard...I guess I will mention it to my ONC next week. It's such a drag that every little pain/muscle ache I have now, worries me so..I wonder how you ever get over the constant worry?
-
Hi all,
Feeling a bit chafed under my breast today. I was told to put the aloe on 7 days a week, 3X a day, but I only use it at night. I am on treatment #16 or so, and have only had a bit of redness under my breast. I will switch back to a soft, no underwire bra next week as well to alleviate this. It's a beautiful spring day here, but sitting inside due to allergies (ugh), and planning on going to yoga later today. Peace and healing to all of you this weekend. So happy to have two rad free days!!!!
-
Mommaof2 - I apply the lotion at least 5 times a day and all through the weekend. If I wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, I apply a little more before I go back to bed. And even though they told me not to apply it an hour before treatment - I never apply it before treatment. To me, that's like putting on baby oil and sitting in the sun. My appointment is in the late afternoon and I go home and shower before each treatment to make sure there is no lotion on my skin during radiation. I also go without a bra as much as possible and topless at home to let air circulate around my breast. So far, so good. There is some slight redness and sometimes a full feeling in my breast.
I have 15 down and 18 to go. It's wonderful to have two days off! Hope everyone enjoys the break!
