Hi Ladies,

Sorry if this is a dulicate to an earlier post, I started one then it "disappeared".  Anyway, I had my Power Port removed today with mixed feelings.  Although I am glad to be done with chemo I am certainly scared about the future without it.  Even though I am anxious to have my hair back I am SOOO scared of this shit (sorry) coming back.  And it HURT coming out.  Much more than when they put it in.  I was in Twilight and feeling no pain when they put it in, and all they gave me for the removal was a Valium.  Enough to make me feel tired, but it HURT (tears)  when they injected me with the Novacaine, and now that has worn off. I am not in extreme pain, but it does hurt where they cut the spot to pull out the port.

I guess I should be celebrating, but once again, I am finding myself as one of those naysayers who is still worried about the future.  Can't help it.  Will it ever get easier????

Thanks to all of you,

Sharon

Pup.....I think with time it does get easier.....you are still fresh from Dx and Tx.....I had my port out 3 weeks post chemo at the suggestion of my onc and I was happy to have it gone....G-d forbid the cancer comes back, I will deal with the situation then if a port is needed or not.....Toast being done with chemo....I think worry is always in the back of our minds, but the longer you go without it coming back, the farther from away the worry is....I am 4 years since Dx....I've been slow in moving on, but BC is not the first thing on my mind, especially when I feel good....Hugs to you....Karen

I am so sorry -they should have given something to you. My last chemo is next week and I had some similar feelings but I am really focusing on my mental health now versus just my physical. I am planning my post tx life in terms of supplements, exercise, etc. It gives me a feeling of control. But you have to keep telling yourself that your biggest big gun is this tx is about to start, your AILS, so your not moving on in a sense, your on your biggest most powerful drug in fighting this disease.

They should have given you something for pain but at least you are one step closer to getting your life back.

The port became a part of you, and was part of the experience you had with BC.  I know it sounds strange but removing it is a little weird emotionally - I get it.  I'm sure when you're feeling better you'll feel a little better about being one step closer to being finished with this mess.  I was only given numbing medication to remove the port and had so much numbing medicine I didn't feel a thing until the next day and when I did, it HURT.  The upside is by the following day, it didn't hurt at all.

Hope you feel better and if you have something to take, take it and rest.  Although it may seem minor, you did have surgery today and need to rest.

Sharon,  I remember when I started all of this I was so afraid of getting a port for chemo.  Then my onc nurse said no "he doesn't give ports"  I was soooo relieved.  I hope you feel better soon.

Sharon - I'm with you.  I'm still so ambivalent about removing mine and if it wasn't such a pain in the ass to have it flushed once a month, I would probably leave it in. I'm also worried about the actual removal process since the conscious sedation thing didn't work when it was inserted.

I do read the pinned "5 years out thread" for inspiration and hope someday I can contribute my own post.
