I read something that said people who don't take a 'cheat' day on their diet do better. I guess they have to keep the portion control under control all the time so they can have the treats they want.

I for one should never buy ice cream. It just sits in my freezer calling my name. A spoonfull here and a spoonfull there adds up when you get on the scale.

How about take it easy on the diet until Tuesday? Don't pig out just try to stick to it, but don't be too strict.

I think it's hard to diet on holidays so I wouldn't start until Tuesday.

That's probably a good idea. I won't use the time-off as an excuse to eat anything I want, but maybe just giving myself a break will help.

Everything just seems so out of control this week. I hate this feeling! But maybe if I just drift with it (something I'm not all that good at doing with the aid of medication), things will be better next week.

I sort of know how you feel.
It seems like I spent much more time maintaining my equilibrum post-bc than I did before.

It helps if I stick to my routine, even if I don't want to. Otherwise I'm a puddle on the floor.

And you're done with your treatments?! That's great.

Done with chemo. Only on Arimidex and Zometa. I know they are drugs that control the cancer, but they aren't as strong as chemo. And they aren't scanning me every 2 months, seeing me every three weeks. So, for me, it's post treatment. As far as someone with bone mets gets post treatment.

Yeah! I should be happy. Right now, I'm just so tired and overwhelmed!

I've been trying to stick to my routine (i.e. high fiber, low fat diet), but I have had a hard time, so now I just feel like I'm failing at that. I thought maybe a break would help. Then it would feel like beginning again.

My husband spent the weekend complaining about his back.
He had a series of treatments for a re-occurance of lymphomia a few months ago. He wasn't sick from it but it got him off his usual schedule, and then his weight got away from him. So we're going on a diet. I figure if low-fat/high fiber is good for me it's good for him too.

He's bummed out because the PET scan still showed some hot spots. But falling off the diet wagon only makes his back hurt, so it's soup/salad/whole grains for us.

My son just had a birthday, and of course we had cake. So I baked vanilla. He liked it and it doesn't call out to me the way choclate does so it's easier to be around without gobbling down.

    Rose,

Is your husband a willing participant in this diet change? Mine "humors" me and will eat just about anything, but after meals, he's likely to go out to Dairy Queen and get a large blizzard.

That's a good idea about finding things the kids/husband like but that I don't especially crave. Then I can stay away from them.

Well, he travels on business alot so that's an escape.
He isn't an active chef so whatever appears on the plate he's likely to eat.

I had a small piece of that cake, and the rest of it is still on the counter. Some things just press my buttons and no matter how hard I try if they are around I'll eat them.

Wish me luck..I'm going to try making my first barley soup today. I read a recipe and it was no different then split pea soup...just add onions, garlic and celery. I'll let you know how this goes. 1/4 cup is 5 grams of fiber. I think opening a can of beans will be easier..I'll find out.

That sounds good. Does it have vegetable broth?

Excuse me if this has already been suggested. I’m way behind on my post reading. Do you know that for sweet recipes you can substitute oil with applesauce?

I make a fantastic oatmeal cookie with applesauce that is fat free. It still has sugar but I tend to half the amount of sugar and increase the amount of cinnamon so there is no compromise on how good these are! I don’t know the numbers but with oatmeal and applesauce, it must be high in fiber, right?

    Rose,

I wound up not having the ingredients for the barley soup last night, no celery, so I'm cooking it tonight. I don't know about using a canned veg. broth because of the salt unless they sell an organic veg. broth. Good idea but I already went shopping.

Instead I made a catch all by frying up fresh spinach and potatoes, eggs, onions and mushrooms in olive oil. It was so good and filling too. I think I found another recipe to use.

Sphinx, Oatmeal muffins with cinnamon and applesauce and raisins, I can't wait for that recipe.

I don't really watch salt - canned broths tend to have a lot. My blood pressure is up from before I started taking tamoxifen, but it's still OK.

I tried grilling vegetables. I bought this pan with holes punched in it at Bed/Bath/Beyond. It keeps the things from falling into the fire. I sprayed it with olive oil.

The vote from my family was that the squash was OK but they never want to see grilled eggplant again. I think I agree about that.

My son had friends over last night and they ate some more of the cake. I'm so proud of myself. I bought ice cream and got strawberry. Without choclate sauce it does nothing for me.

    Non-fat oatmeal cookies

From my Betty Crocker cookbook but I hacked at the recipe so much, I guess we can call it Sphynx’s cookies!

    ¾ cup of non-sweetened applesauce
    1 egg
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    ¼ cup water
    ½ cup brown sugar
    ¼ cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon (this may be too much for some – but I like
    cinnamon)
    ½ teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
    1/2 cup all-purpose flour

2 cups old-fashioned oats (add more if consistency is too moist)
Nuts, pecans and/or raisins (throw in whatever you like)

You might want to use your own discretion on the amount of sugar and cinnamon. I find that if I cut out the amount of sugar called for, I cannot really tell much of a difference.

I make 6 huge cookies that fit on one cookie sheet. Bake for about 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees.

I have been substituting all oils with applesauce in my muffins, cakes and cookies and also using splenda in place of the sugar in everything, cuts down on both fat and calories - even zuccini bread was made with applesauce and crushed pinapple instead of the oils and everyone at work loved it - made cheesecake with fat free cream cheese and splenda & topped with lite cherries, couldnt tell the difference

Kathy - I also make a great zucinni bread with much less sugar and applesauce.

I tried these cookies with Splenda (white and brown) and I'm afraid I found them revolting! I prefer cutting the sugar content down to the minimum. On the box of Splenda it says that you use the same amount as you would for sugar. Did you do that? I thought they had a funky chemical taste.

Thanks for the recipe Sphynx. I'll try it. It's funny, I'm looking for ways to get oil in and you all are taking it out.

Well I made the barley soup last night. It had no taste no matter what I did to perk it up. I can see that as a hardy winter breakfast food with apples, and raisins and such. I'll bet that would be tasty.

    Sphynx,

Made the oatmeal cookies last night. They were good. I didn't make them as large, though. That would blow my diet right out of the water.

Last week I was stressing so I blew my regular eating plan. Thanks, Rose, for the suggestion of resuming after the holiday!

So, I'm back on this week and the strangest thing has happened. It's easier again, but that's not the strange part. What's strange is that I seem to have lost weight! But I was eating more for those four days. I'm not complaining, just noting the oddity of it all!

    Theresa,

Maybe you were eating more protein in those 4 days? I lost weight on this eating plan but it stopped, stopped cold. For months now I've been trying to get off a rotten 7 lbs but they're glued on. Exercise, no exercise nothing changes. I don't go up and I don't go down. I'm not discouraged yet because I keep improving on my cholesterol numbers which was why I started this in the first place.

On a side note, I mentioned this diet plan to my Onc. His reply to me was that he thinks I am dwelling. I'm dwelling?

Well I think he's an idiot. So which is worse, being a dweller or being an idiot? How do I find these Dr.s?

    Rosemary,

Funny that your onc reacts that way. My onc's office put me on this diet.

Regarding the protein ... hmmmm. It's possible, I was just trying not to overindulge while I wasn't paying as much attention. I know I drank more soda.

Sphynx: I use the same amount of splenda as white sugar - have never substituted it for the brown sugar tho - just white - oatmeal cookies & chocolate chip were the only cookie recipes I tried and family thought they were good - even use splenda in my sun tea (pretty soon no more of that with fall coming) My family thinks I'm nuts, but I have lost 57lbs since Oct 04, so I trudge on with whatever I can find that works - altho during last year's holiday season, I ate anything and everything I wanted - it was my gift to myself, not to watch - paid for it tho as I gained almost 5 lbs during my break from dieting.

KathyG, that's terrific! 54 pounds! I am 18.6 lost since the end of May and keep plugging along. Like a turtle. I really do eat anything I want (maybe some butter and some bacon once in a while), but I keep it balanced and measure, measure, measure. One thing I do that one is definitely NOT supposed to do, and that is, I weigh myself every morning and every night and sometimes during the day. It's not discouraging to me and I've really learned the way my body reacts to different foods and drink. My scale has half-pound increments. There, now I've told one of my deepest secrets.

Judy - I do think weighing yourself 3 times a day is a bit much, but if it keeps you on the straight and narrow.... I weight myself in the morning, before I eat breakfast. Do you have a digital scale? I've never seen one with half-pound increments.

Theresa - I've had times when I maintained my weight in the face of what seemed like extra eatting, but it always seems to get me in the end.

Rosemary - I agree, that is a strange reaction. Seven pounds doesn't just fall off, you have to 'dwell' on it to get rid of it.

Does Splenda have some other name? I was looking at my Fiber One cereal and don't see it listed.

Rose, I guess I'd better stop accusing my husband of being obsessive, right? Yes, my scale is digital. If I could get one with 1/4 pounds I could weigh myself more. Judy

Judy, I too, weigh in several times a day, both at work and at home, I fear the pounds just coming back and I have to make sure by checking often. . . weird, but I feel in control that way

Theresa PW, I have to apologize. I went back to read your original post about low fat, high fiber diets. I have not kept on that topic, going off on my own tangents which I often do. But, I'm enjoying this thread and often have an overwhelming urge to add to it. Judy

    Rose,

It lists sucralose about 3/4 of the way down on the side panel. I'm going back to the organic cereals. They use cane sugar. I didn't see it on the Honey Clusters because they listed sugars first. Not nice. I hate giving up those easy 14 grams of fiber in just one bowl. Maybe if we all wrote General Mills to cease and desist?

Also, in the always looking for fibrous goodies dept., I found Orville Redenbacher's 94% fat free Kettle Korn. 7g of fiber per serving. Ahhhh

Yes, I see sucralose. I wish they wouldn't do that. Usually when they put an artifical sweetener in they have the little trademark somewhere on the box.

My grilled vegies turned out really good. I cut them up and sprayed them with olive oil. Then I put them on the pan, and put that on the grill and put the grill cover on. I let them cook a long time, stiring now and then.

They weren't limp, and re-heated well.
