 my mom was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and after talking to her surgeon she found out it was non invasive and they caught it early she will need a lumpectomy and radiation for six weeks 6 days a week im not sure how long each session of radiation will be is non invasive cancer better than invasive and what are the chances of reccursence my mom is only 52 years young please help its the most difficult thing ive ever had to experience in my life

    You've come to the right place for information. You'll be a great support system for your mom, who could probably use someone else to try to absorb all of the information that will be coming at her.

    The radiation sessions go pretty quickly. The first one or two will take longer because they'll be doing measurements and calculations. The others will take about 5 minutes. It literally took me much longer to change into the gown they provided than it did to have the treatment!

    Non-invasive means that there is no evidence that it has spread beyond her breast, which is good news.

    Non- invasive means it has not spread outside of her milk ducts... it is called DCIS cancer... that is excellent news!   (DCIS- ductal carcinoma in situ).   She will get through this and be fine...  Tami

    I agree!  You're mom will be fine.  It's a lot to handle at first, but she will be okay.  Tami is right, DCIS (non-invasive) means it has not spread out of her milk ducts.

    The radiation is very manageable and quick!  It took me longer to get undressed than it did to have the radiation.  I think mine was about 3 minutes long!  Very quick.

    I don't mean to say there is a "good" cancer, but if a person has to face it, noninvasive is definitely the best one in terms of survival. Your mom is blessed to have you to support her. She may have lots of "emotional' days, because cancer is scary, no matter what type or stage it is. Just hang in there, say lots of prayers for her & know that she is going to be OKAY! :-)

    Hi Ben.  You sound pretty scared...and it sounds like you and your mom are pretty tight...and that you really need her around, right?  Trust me, her situation is as good as cancer can get.  That doesn't mean she is going to just fly through all of this and not have any issues.  How old are you?  You've mentioned how old your mom is...but what about you?  Are you old enough to help her out?  Can you do some cooking/cleaning/washing etc?  These are things that are going to tire her out and she is going to need lots of rest.  Make sure you try to do everything you possibly can to make her life easier right now.  She has to take some of the time and energy she probably usually spends on her family and focus on herself right now.  Can you help her do that?  If you can, you will be giving her the best gift a son could ever give his mom.
